If you believe there is absolutely nothing we can do as individuals to help, then you're in the wrong community. This place is dedicated to promoting ways that we can reduce our individual footprints.

I acknowledge that the majority of impact is due to the wealthy and the institutions that uphold them, such as the military. But we cannot change that as individuals, at least not quickly. And taking individual actions in the meantime does not have any downsides.

Theis isn't about depriving oneself. It's about consuming more consciously. We don't need to buy the vast majority of the stuff we do in the global north. When you read about the "top 10%" of the world's disproportionate impact — that is likely us. Even if we eliminated billionaires instantly, global meat consumption would be unsustainable. Extraction rates would be unsustainable. No snowflake feels that it is part of an avalanche. We all have to do our part.

Libraries are one of the only places left where we can go and not be expected to spend any money. They're amazing, and should be used to the fullest and defended when threatened.

Some places also offer free or reduced admission with a library card, like museums and botanical gardens. Worth looking into!

RSS feeds started throwing 429 errors today, like I predicted. They were never going to leave this loophole open.

I cannot believe how resistant people can be to putting in a modicum of effort to not be racist/sexist/queerphobic. It does not take much effort to use the preferred term.

It's a Kbin problem.

You can score patterns into the top.

If it is recycled. But the profit motive isn't there, so in a lot of places it simply isn't. In Canada's second largest city, it all goes to landfill, and they don't even have a bottle return system yet.

I'll start!

I really like The Enchiridion by Epictetus, which is a very short introduction to Stoic philosophy. Stoic philosophy ties in closely to simple living for me because it allow me to focus on the things that I can control and that matter to me, letting go of those things that I cannot control. Meditations by Marcus Aurelius is another Stoic text, longer than the Enchiridion, that gives insight into the life of someone living their Stoic values. It's a series of journal entries with much insight into daily challenges, and I have taken away a lot from it. Here's one of my favourite quotes:

If you seek tranquility, do less. Or, more accurately, do what's essential – what the logos of a social being requires, and in the requisite way. Which brings a double satisfaction: to do less, better. Because most of what we say and do is not essential. If you can eliminate it, you'll have more time, and more tranquility. Ask yourself at every moment, "is this necessary?"

Because some of these communities are more official than others. For example, I modded /r/simpleliving and made !simpleliving@lemmy.ml, but !simpleliving@lemmy.world also exists. It would be a bit annoying if users were directed to the less-active and less-official community over the one I made just because it happens to be on lemmy.world.

Absolutely! I also made a post a while back that expands upon this. I feel that who we are is best defined not by what we do for work, neither by what we consume for recovery from work, but by what we do in our free time that we have a deep interest in. I also have noticed how much this is lacking in the people around me as of late (try having a conversation with someone new that isn't about either work or TV!) and I really chalk it up to how draining work is. Most people have to work very hard or long hours to make ends meet because housing is so expensive now, and that leaves little time or energy for anything beside basics of life or rest.

And trust me, moderation can absolutely lead to madness if you let it get away from you. I'm hoping this group stays small and authentic.

We've all been through the phase when we wanted 200 cool animations for a single window drag 😂

RIP Compiz
