Fedora:

1. Missing Basic GUI Settings

  • Startup applications
  • No full shortcut customization
  • Need to install extensions for basic features
  • Media codecs missing by default (no clear indication or prompt)
  • You need to enable RPM Fusion (no prompt, hidden toggle)
  • Apps not installed via the software center must be removed via the terminal
  • Editing app menu entries through a third-party app (unstable / breaks frequently)

2. Issues

  • Wi-Fi not working initially
  • Onboard GPU not working initially (and also no indication, noticed it in system monitor)
  • Couldn't get the printer driver to work
  • GRUB menu became misconfigured
  • System stopped booting at some point

GNOME

(GNOME used in Fedora Workstation)

1. UI Design

  • No app dock by default
  • App grid/selector sucks
  • No minimize button by default
  • Calculator results cannot be copied
  • Search resets when exiting search view
  • Thunderbird tray not working

2. Customization

  • Cannot properly remap the Windows/Super key
  • Very limited ability to customize touchpad gestures

3. Wayland / Mutter Compositor

  • GNOME uses Mutter compositor, which has no support for gtk4-layer-shell
  • Some apps, like Activity Watch, don’t work due to Wayland's security philosophy

No hate, but I am relieved to switch back to Windows 10 after a year of Fedora. Partly because I need Windows for work, but mostly because Fedora and GNOME suck.

I found the light scale for lamps to be a bit weird and inconsistent between brands. I think they refer to sky color, not actual Kelvin color.

Used 5000K because it is missing from OP's post for some reason.

Can't you be both ok with who you are and have beautiful hair at 20?

If you are a guy getting into your twenties, better start using Topical minoxidil 2%. It is better to prevent balding than to cure it (5% minoxidil or Finasteride).

edit: removed the article which included many unproven methods

The idea of junk DNA is based on the fact that it doesn't code for any proteins, but many other functions have been found for it (small nuclear RNA, microRNA, small interfering RNA, etc.). Some parts of the genome are not transcribed into anything but still have a functional purpose, such as in telomere caps and in folding. And there are large parts with no known purpose, they might be remnants of working genes, and they might have a function in evolution (see the "might"). One research project (Encode) found that around 80% of the human genome is transcribed, but the argument against this is that DNA being transcribed may not necessarily mean it has a function. The theory of junk DNA hasn't diseapered but it isn't necessarily true either.

I am just a student, so take my info with a pinch of salt.

It sounded quite bad until I took the time to visit the website and read the entire text:

Xlibre is a fork of the Xorg Xserver with lots of code cleanups and enhanced functionality.

This fork was necessary since toxic elements within Xorg projects, moles from BigTech, are boycotting any substantial work on Xorg, in order to destroy the project, to eliminate competition of their own products. Classic "embrace, extend, extinguish" tactics.

Right after journalists first began covering the planned fork Xlibre, on June 6th 2025, Redhat employees started a purge on the Xlibre founder's GitLab account on freedesktop.org: deleted the git repo, tickets, merge requests, etc, and so fired the shot that the whole world heard.

This is an independent project, not at all affiliated with BigTech or any of their subsidiaries or tax evasion tools, nor any political activists groups, state actors, etc. It's explicitly free of any "DEI" or similar discriminatory policies. Anybody who's treating others nicely is welcomed.

It doesn't matter which country you're coming from, your political views, your race, your sex, your age, your food menu, whether you wear boots or heels, whether you're furry or fairy, Conan or McKay, comic character, a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri, or just a boring average person. Anybody who's interested in bringing X forward is welcome.

Together we'll make X great again!

It seems to me this person is a bit of a conspiracy theorist and simply has a different understanding of what DEI means. Maybe an important lesson is not to believe everything you read on the internet.

Obviously, I can't create the entire universe by my own, adding features in the way I see fit depends also on what others create. In this case, the app won't be cross-platform, and users will complain when it doesn't work properly on their distro. So I don't see the issue with me complaining a bit as well.

I am not mad at the Wayland devs, it's just unfortunate.

So, as far as I understand, this works with gtk3, which will still work with Xwayland, but will eventually be phased out? Anyway, I think I will just use gtk4 layer shell and hope it supports all compositors eventually

Does anybody know how to set a window always on bottom in rust gtk4? set_type_hint() does not exist.
