Yep, it's centralized. However, it offers more functionality than just syncing stuff. If you only want to sync files, syncthing is the simpler, more lightweight solution :)

Syncthing just... syncs things. Say you have a folder that you want to automatically get synced between devices, syncthing is exactly for this.

If you want something like Google Drive, you can run Nextcloud, which is like a self hosted Google Drive, but more powerful. You upload files, which get saved to the server, not just synced between devices. Then you can also sync them, sync calendars, news (RSS feeds), edit documents in it (assuming you install the correct extension), and a lot more things.

Yes I do, but I prefer to not be a part of a cult of fanatics (so-called "religion) who only pretend to live their life by some ancient book. Don't get me wrong, the religious books, such as the Bible and Quran do contain a lot of knowledge and some pieces should be followed, but going to church on Sunday just to show everyone how "good of a Christian" I am is unbelievably dumb.

I see God as an entity that helps me, and I do believe in the afterlife. It just seems so bizzare to me, that I should follow some rules that people made, saying that God actually did... The church is a company like any other and I'm not going to support it, ever.

Oh boy, where do I even start. I guess we should first have a minute of silence for my wallet...

  • Fixing old computers

In high school, I agreed to take the decommisioned PCs home. They were in various states of not working, I diagnosed the problems, bought parts, upgraded and fixed them all. I now had a ton of relatively old but reliable computers. What's the logical next step?

  • Home server room (homelab).

I live in a flat with a giant basement, so it's full of these old PCs and servers. I needed a server rack, switches, cabling, the whole nine yards.

  • Photography

New lenses and filters constantly bought. Sometimes a new camera body. This is my most expensive hobby by far, but I take care of the lenses so they at least hold value, unlike the PCs :)

I have disconnected the built-in camera and microphone on my laptop. If I want to have a conference call, I just plug in equivalent external devices.

After being friends with her for a year, one year less than the amount of time I had a massive crush on her, I asked her out. She rejected me, but we agreed to stay friends and she assured me that nothing happened and we can continue like before. However, I now feel like I'm being used (or how do you say it). She doesn't talk to me as much, only contacts me when she has a tech problem. That doesn't seem like a friendship. When I confronted her, she said she wasn't ghosting me, stopped for like a week, then continued.

I still think about her every day.

I support ecovandalism but not on property that belongs to average humans trying to live their life. Yeah I own an ancient car with a combustion engine, but please don't destroy it, because I don't have money for a more efficient one and other that it, I try to do everything as ecologically as possible.

I use public transport when possible (even in my village in the middle of nowhere), I separate waste, save energy by not using proprietary software that's inefficient, everything I buy is second-hand, just a few things off the top of my head. I had two windows and the windshield destroyed over the span of a few months, with all-caps text sprayed on the doors saying "I destroy the planet"... Please don't do this, don't be a scumbag. There are plenty of us doing their best in our financial situation :)

The only way :) Once I stopped using all proprietary software, I also quit social media (this account is the first one after such a long time) and I've never felt happier. Linux and privacy for the win!

Yep, I guessed this was the way. Thanks for clarifying :)

Of course I did. My only OS for the past 7 years

[–] hackris@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 years ago

I use Gentoo on my main computer. I was just curious.

How? Is there a way to mitigate this?
