There is a wonderful story about Ikkyu, a Zen monk who lived in the fifteenth century in Japan. It seems the governor of the province where Ikkyu lived posted a sign next to a twisted and gnarled pine tree. If you’ve hiked in high altitudes, or along the coast, you can often see trees like this – trees that have been sculpted by the artistic winds and rain they are exposed to. The sign read, ”Whoever can see this crooked pine tree as straight will receive a prize.”

“People who walked past the tree and read the sign stopped and tried to figure out this riddle. How could they see this crooked tree as straight? Many people circled the tree, some several times. Others laid flat on the ground and looked up from below. A few climbed the tree and one person brought a ladder so as to get a glimpse of the tree from above the crown. “But nobody figured out how to see the crooked tree as straight.”

“So the riddle went unsolved and word of this challenge spread throughout the province.”

“One day Ikyu came walking by and read the sign. He looked at the tree and immediately went to the governor’s estate. He claimed, ” I have solved the riddle and would like my prize.” Somewhat surprised, and perhaps a bit suspicious the governor asked, “how did you see the crooked tree straight?” And Ikkyu answered, “It is crooked.” A crooked tree is crooked and to see it “just as it is” is to see it straight.”

The ? is cat-related activities, like midnight zoomies and knocking things off of tables.

The grass looks like shag carpeting. AI still can't seem to get textures right.

Most recently...

Sit down with a glass of unsweetened cold brew tea, ripping my Yocan Orbit after inserting a nice dab of a gassy live rosin, all while vibing to Akira The Don's That Golden Sound album. Chill af.

Do you think I have a lot of free time?

Yes? Yes. I'm going with yes.

Also, your spelling and grammar are fine. For a non-native, you're practically fluent.

I only have to say two words to dispel this magic: Baby Shark.

I am done with Dave and Busters. What a shitshow. Some of the machines are always broken, the food is mediocre at best, and I just want to play fun games, not win tickets for shitty prizes. Where are all the real arcade machines?!

Watch some primitive/bushcraft survival videos on YouTube. There's a lot of good tips and tricks, especially for when you aren't exactly prepared for camping (emergency situations) and need shelter, fire, food, water, etc.

Favorite channels:

  • Bertram - Craft and Wilderness (off-trail camping videos)
  • Coalcracker Bushcraft (lots of good info)
  • Donnie Dust's Paleo Tracks (primitive tools)
  • Primitive Technology (fire by friction, primitive crafting)
  • Survivorman - Les Stroud (survival, cooking, history, etc)
  • Woodsbound Outdoors (good info and demo)

File this one under “did not see this coming in a million years but also not sad about it whatsoever”: Daybreak has acquired Palia studio Singularity 6.

“Our team is absolutely thrilled to be joining forces with Daybreak Game Company, a subsidiary of Enad Global 7 AB (EG7), known for publishing and supporting some of the world’s most popular and successful online multiplayer franchises, such as EverQuest, H1Z1, The Lord of the Rings Online, and more,” S6 announced this evening. “The acquisition provides us with some incredible resources and support to continue developing Palia and elevate the product to meet the gold standard that our players expect, including engaging new content, impactful social features, and quality-of-life improvements across the board.”

Singularity 6 says that it will “continue operating independently” under its co-founders and that its “vision and creative direction will remain intact,” which would generally be one of those lines in a press release like this that causes eyerolls, but it might actually be believable in this case, given how Daybreak has handled Standing Stone Games for the last many years now.

Daybreak, of course, was founded back in 2015 using the bones of SOE, but it was itself acquired by EG7, and since then, it’s basically taken over EG7 from the inside out. It’s actually performed fairly well for EG7 over the last few years, though it dipped at the end of 2023, sold off the PlanetSide IP, and relinquished development of PlanetSide 2. Buying an existing studio and game actually aligns rather nicely with EG7’s stated goals of running consistent mid-tier MMORPG moneymakers.

S6 has been struggling for the last many months as it appeared to be suffering serious financial difficulties and went through multiple rounds of layoffs as well as its Palia beta obfuscation fiasco, so it’s hard to see this as anything but good news for folks who wanted to see Palia stick around to actually see its real launch and/or see Daybreak expand and maybe even return to its glory days of bailing out floundering MMOs.
