Ed zitron (talking about the rot economy, and other present tech/internet downslope garbage) features pretty frequently on here, as does Brian merchant (search “blood in the machine”)

There’s a couple podcast threads as well, search for “behind the bastards” on here and you’ll find them. Search on my phone isn’t great

Someone else I’ve been following recently who also posts (practical) hope amidst the trash is joan westenburg

Re db0: awful is on lemmy as well so it mostly works. So you should be able to sub to techtakes easily. Read the sidebar/about for an intro about the place tho

you just gotta love how vacuously pointless the wording is

You must disclose

google-rfc "must": "we want something we can bend you over a barrel with if you're caught out by one, but that's all we'll bother committing because otherwise it eats into our lovely extortion profits"

via this I just learned that google's about[0] to open the taps on fingerprinting allowance for advertisers

that'll go well.

I realize that a lot of people in the rtb space already spend an utterly obscene amount of effort and resources to try do this shit in the first place, but jesus, this isn't even pretending. guess their projections for ad revenue must be looking real scary!

edit [0] - "about", as in next month. and they announced it last month.

and introduced me to some regional forum that went offline many years ago

every so often when I do password manager housekeeping, I take a browse around some of the older entries here and there. resultingly: I have a stunning and diverse collection of bitrot, comprised of more than merely a bunch of dead links!

(I still fairly often ponder what happens to all that data that almost definitely wasn't handled "rm -rf at company shutdown" way...)

you're not alone, I myself have lamented in passing around here

unclear from your post whether you've been following the spaces of people talking about this, been following along on here, or anything such. so first I'll ask - have you? if not, there's a whole bunch of threads and commonly-followed names to be found on awful that may provide references, touchstones, and more

Edit bored on a train so I did the math, in the comment thread, this user has made 30% of the comments by count and 20% by “volume” (basically number of bytes in the plaintext).

tha's a lotta posting

[–] froztbyte@awful.systems 12 points 8 months ago

at least for once it isn't the kind of post where a bayfucker went "I took acid in a park and you wouldn't believe what I discovered"

I know that name. loom is just a video and screen recorder with unnecessary social networking

same. I was like "hold on, don't I know this name?", did a quick search and got to "oh right it's twitch clips enterprise edition" and then

and AI feature

"....but the fuck is AI-based loop clips?"

seriously, they have "AI-based" on their frontpage

I’m kinda amazed it’s not multiple Telegram groups

vulnerabilities for thee but not for me! but kinda same, esp given how much both orange man and felon are willing to ride putin's tumescent instructions to feel some faint warm glow at how much destruction they can wreak

reminder: one does not, under any circumstances, have to "give it to them". these weird fuckers already have all the water carriers they need

and no, it doesn't appear to be the case that this person is merely a shitty writer

(nor is that the only thing they're shitty about)

I think it did come up a few weeks back, but it's indeed a hilarious mess. the engagement must flow!

so, for instance, in the case of markdown specifically: it's actually a shitshow format to implement. the reference implementation driving the "spec" as done by gruber was (iirc) essentially a big stack of regexes with language-specific behaviours assumed in, and lots of by-design implementation presumptions rather than by-specification dictation

want to make an implementation in another language? better hope you know every single corner case and behaviour!

(this is one of the reasons why markdown impls varied for so many years, and why even now "commonmark" is still trying to fix the issue)
