Yeah it's a thankless task. I don't know who it was who thought "Let's start our own Reddit ... with reposted stuff from Reddit!"

[–] freamon@feddit.nl 2 points 2 years ago

Thanks for the suggestion - I'll give it a try. There's so many Communities (about 20k) and they don't change that often, so it's difficult to know what the best metrics are. Only really to try something new and see whether it produces something interesting. So I'll continue experimenting.

This is the response for a community:

{ "baseurl": "lemmy.world", "url": "https://lemmy.world/c/starwarsmemes", "name": "starwarsmemes", "title": "Star Wars Memes", "desc": "Hello there. Somehow, Star Wars memes have returned. It's not a trap, this is where the fun begins.\n\nTechnical note: if you're coming from another star system and are getting a \"Subscription pending\" message when trying to dock, that's just the console being slow to display the right message. The connection is already established. (Probably.)\n\n\n\nSp", "icon": "https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/1df05a77-c6dd-4662-9ea3-62a24ca9a25f.jpeg", "banner": "https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/a6a96e24-de89-4720-9bbe-9ca5447dc6e3.png", "nsfw": false, "counts": { "id": 287, "community_id": 465, "subscribers": 7847, "posts": 216, "comments": 1734, "published": "2023-06-07T14:25:41.586869", "users_active_day": 10, "users_active_week": 204, "users_active_month": 905, "users_active_half_year": 945, "hot_rank": 0 }, "time": 1689730109444, "isSuspicious": false, "score": 2895543 }

To give you an idea of which information is / isn't available (I don't know why I thought the description wasn't in there)

The other "trending" lists work off "users_active_week" I think, but - for me - seem as likely to link me to something inactive/empty. Post today vs. posts yesterday would be doable (but I'd probably rather read one interesting post in 'hobbydrama' over then posts from 'risa')

I disable them individually as them come up, but it's a pain, and can see why people just Death Star the lot of them (is "death star" a verb?).

As the author of a bot that I hope is useful though, it's kind of a bummer.

Adding descriptions would be complicated tbh: some are massive (so it's difficult to know where to cut off), the JSON from lemmyverse.net doesn't include them, and I'd have to make a new decision about how many Communities to include (this post would probably be unmanageable if it was full of descriptions too)

The metric used (subscriber growth) doesn't account for if there's actually much of anything there, but I like that these lists highlight new stuff that people might be interested in, rather than ones that people probably already know about.

[–] freamon@feddit.nl 3 points 2 years ago

The new posts (from today onwards) include the subscriber count in them.

[–] freamon@feddit.nl 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Thank you, but it was the one after that one. You wouldn't have seen it. I know 'cos after I tagged it, I couldn't see it either (well, not without changing my account settings, which makes Lemmy into a whole other experience.

[–] freamon@feddit.nl 4 points 2 years ago (4 children)

Tagging something as NSFW is just a click, so no biggie

This is true, but I think Lemmy accounts default to not showing NSFW stuff, so most people browsing this Community won't see anything tagged with it. So the mechanism for avoiding potential lewd comments, is to make sure it won't get any comments at all.

This is one theory. The other is that the NSFW meme I posted earlier that went nowhere wasn't as funny as I thought it was. But that seems inconceivable.

[–] freamon@feddit.nl 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Like a literal NSFW tag on the post? I've just done that, and now I can't see my own post (because my intentions are better than my thoughts, I guess)

Or like, just putting "NSFW" as text in the title?

[–] freamon@feddit.nl 2 points 2 years ago

RESULT! Thanks, works now.

[–] freamon@feddit.nl 2 points 2 years ago

No, it gets its data from Lemmyverse.net, so it covers everything. Feddit.nl just happens to be where me and the bot are signed up at. Good luck with your Community!

Re: navigating between Subscribed, Local or All on the Alexandrite version, I've just realised that I also have to press "Go>" to make it change, so sorry about that.

Re: using LASIM to upload subscriptions still doesn't do anything, unfortunately. It might be the app - I've never used it on anything before tbh.

Tansy Gardam (from the Going Rogue podcast) has said it's Tony Gilroy, but I think it's more likely to be his brother. Unsurprisingly, they sound alike, and John has spoke about providing temp dialogue from his editing station.
So I think that scene is just one where they didn't bother to replace his voice with an actor's.

Obligatory Andor community plug.

The credits last episode I saw has writer's names separated by the word 'and' (rather than an '&' to show they were working together), and a line for "Director of Photography for Additional Photography".

In other words, they had to do re-writes and re-shoots for a 30 minute episode of television. Given that, it's not surprising that the end result hasn't lived up to the promise.

Notes:
This insert shot for the reshoot of Cassian's "Spies, Assassins, Saboteurs" speech is merged with Principal Photography of the scene, with the gang appearing in the background, and then shots of Jynn used to mask the transition.
It must have created a lot of work for costumers, make-up artists, hairstylists, etc, getting 20 dudes looking exactly the same as they did a few months ago. Expensive way to make a movie!
K2 is also at the back of the group, but he wasn't mo-capped by Alan Tudyk. Likewise, they used a stunt performer for K2's "rescue" of Jynn on Wobani. He was present to film his death, though.
None of the Additional Photography was shot on the large, purpose-built sets they originally built. This scene gets noticeably livelier at the end, back to using footage from when the cast were on the set for Yavin IV.

Transcribed from an old, mostly in-French, interview with Gareth Edwards:

We felt we needed to have some characters in the film that represented a belief in the force, because there's no Jedi in our movie - it was in an era when they'd all been made extinct, in theory. And so, to try and get inspiration I'd watch the things that inspired George Lucas, which was the original Akira Kurosawa film The Hidden Fortress and in that film there are two asian characters that bicker and squabble a lot, and they became, eventually, R2-D2 and C-3PO in the final movie. So we just rewound time and didn't make them droids, and kept them as two asian characters fighting. They were like the yin-yang of our film - the Belief and the Not-Belief, like War and Peace, which became Baze and Chirrut.
