They have huge corporate subscribers who are willingly funding open source support and development, but since their purpose now is a profit center, they have to kill the goose that laid their golden egg.

Maximizing revenue growth must be paramount - at the cost of everything else, including the foundation that the company was built on.

Hopefully Red Hat will follow Reddit into the dustbin of irrelevancy.

Everyone on Lemmy is me, except this bot.

Just a word of thanks for posting this. Hadn't used lichess.org before but definitely prefer it - the design is no-nonsense but it has equivalent functionality to chess.com, or so it appears. The fact that it's committed to providing free service and runs on donations seals the deal and I'll be happy to chip in because I'm switching.

wow, some of those subs are huge! After seeing what happened with Mastodon, I'd venture that Lemmy's going to see an avalanche of new users next week - look out below!

The best thing about Lemmy is that it's still so raw. There is so much potential for it to be turned into something really great. Then again, television was once like that, I suppose - so was the internet, now I think about it. Oh well, at least I'm not lurking.
