Just a note on terminology, but subreddits are called communities here (hence the c/ in the url), not feddits. Also, the software this place runs is called Lemmy, so most places discussing it will have Lemmy in the name not Feddit. For questions about here there's !newtolemmy@lemmy.ca or !lemmy_support@lemmy.ml, but feel free to ask questions here or on !feddituk@feddit.uk and people will normally be happy to help (including myself).

Can I edit/change my username?

You can't change your username, but you have a setting called 'Display name' which can be changed and will be what shows up in most places, e.g. my username is flamingos but my display name is flamingos-cant which is the name you see.

They would have a lot more options in that case, like they could stop engaging or explain they're not comfortable being open about it. Requiring having you're gender identity display in your bio/display name would make it too easy to glean by potential abusers and thus make this platform unsafe for vulnerable trans people.

I don't think I've ever been in a situation where nslookup was available but dig wasn't. On Fedora, they're in the same package.

IDK, this would force closeted trans people either to out themselves or misgender themselves. Not everyone is in a position where it's safe to be themselves, even online.
