There's an interesting discussion about whether forcing people who don't want to vote into voting is a good thing.

I definitely think our mandatory voting system has some great benefits, especially that it makes voter suppression far more difficult. But at the end if the day, I've seen electors who couldn't name two federal PM candidates or the party policies of the two main parties. What is the benefit of forcing such people into voting? They clearly don't have an interest in making the correct decision for themselves or our state. So it simply makes the election less effective, turning it more into a gimmicky popularity spectacle than a decision making process.

fr why are you becoming a politician in Aus if you just hate democracy and transparency

People who care about those things don't get the support of mass media major shareholders, huge financial backers, and other corporate interests that have the power to more easily sway elections.

The bottom line is our electoral system is dominated by people who don't benefit from democracy or transparency. Bad politicians aren't an outlier or corruption, but the system working as it's been built to.

That page interestingly advertises it both as a "food additive" and as an "OC spray" (a technical term for pepper spray). hile that technically doesn't imply a use-case, it's a term associated with the pepper spray weapon and its strength is in the high end of that range.

I'm being sincere, they compared it to a similar event to contrast the reaction.

But I just kinda feel like “no doxxing”

Who are you quoting?

[article] For his part, Louis Rossmann denies that his videos about Better Way Electronics involved doxxing. He says any information he shared was all publicly available, including the number provided on the company's website for customer service enquiries.

FWIW, I'm pretty sure this is still doxxing.

Hart was sentenced over the prank on Tuesday, with Perth District Court Judge Felicity Zempilas telling him she did not accept the claim he thought he had innocuous fart spray in his pocket and not Satan’s Spit as he was seen on CCTV repeatedly looking at the product.

Yeah, I had a hunch it wasn't "a prank". But even if this didn't happen and it was a fart spray, I'd say give them a slap on the wrist for that antisocial crap too (just not a full 16 months like this capsaicin chemical attack earned).

Dunno why traumatic is in quotes and prank isn’t.

I'm guessing it's an actual quote and not a scare quote, even if it doesn't read that way.

edit: I just realised, is there even a legitimate use for that product, culinary or otherwise, or is it effectively consumer-available pepper spray?

One of the few positions where I can agree with them. Anyone who claims to represent me in government shouldn't be swearing allegiance of a monarch.

The small protest did not disrupt proceedings, as it did when Victorian senator Lidia Thorpe gave the oath in 2022.

I'm glad the author added this line.

A test when you’re 18 that lasts the rest of your life? [...]

Good criticism, I didn't think that part through. Once every 3 years is probably to often. Somewhere in the middle would be ideal.

And the bottom line is that many people will just be in a hurry, stressed or tired. But I hope that this kind of thing would improve instinct and build habits that would reduce the impact of those inevitable factors.

And what happens if they can’t pass? Are they barred from voting?

Try again until they pass. Not registered until they pass. The test allows all the assistance that one would receive in a polling centre.

What's the point of letting someone in the polling booth if they can't fill out the ballot under ideal conditions? It's not empowering them, it's just compromising the democratic process.

That’s risky for both the reason of discrimination

I claim that if someone is unable to pass this test, their vote wouldn't have counted anyway. It's only as discriminatory as the election itself is.

Unless these people literally didn’t make it to year 6

That, and plenty of other edge cases too. There are a surprising amount of people who made it through school and remained illiterate or innumerate (I can't easily find stats).

That doesn’t mean they will [...] always want to.

It's perfectly valid (IMO) to nullify your vote. What disturbs me is how many people seem to unintentionally cast an invalid vote despite wanting to vote. It points me to suspect a systematic issue beyond just apathy.

Thanks for that little extra in the title.

Machine learning (well, more specifically, the marketing term "AI") has a bad reputation. It's a tool. And we're so used to seeing that tool wildly abused that it's hard not to have an instinctual reaction whenever it appears in the media. But recognising writing and text is one of the legitimately reasonable uses of the tool, so long as it's done properly and not misunderstood as an objective replacement for humans - it may have better accuracy that a typical person but still it's not objective and its training data will inevitably have limitations.

Rather, the court is being asked to determine more mundane questions. Is that 1 actually a 7; is that 6 an 8? and so on.

It consistently amazes me on the level of inability people have when it comes to simple tasks like filling in a ballot.

Now, I understand that I have advantages that not everyone has, like over a decade of local school experience filling exams, so I shouldn't consider what's natural and obvious to me to be universal expected knowledge. But at some point, the government and AEC should just have a mandatory 30 minute voting test when you enroll, so you have no excuse not to know how to print numbers clearly (hell, teach us about ~~7~~ and other good habits), so you know how to read simple English voting instructions or know how to ask for assistance if you're unable for any reason.

Speakers at the gala include war hawk David Weinberg and a Technion graduate talking about their recent duty in the IDF. Many Australian universities including UTS and USyd have partnerships with Technion.

Protest was announced to be taking place at 151 Castlereagh St, Sydney (near Town Hall Station).

The rally is organised by Stop the War on Palestine, and supported by UTS Staff for Palistine, NTEU for Palestine, PalSoc UTS, Students against War and Palestine Youth Movement.

I realise that all the screenshots of evidence make this article look longer than it is, so I've written some bullet points, but the whole article is worth reading (if you're willing to handle content mentioned in the warnings). Breaking federal laws, offering lawyers to neo-Nazis, getting into tiffs with said neo-Nazis when they turn out to be misogynist turds, it's a ride.

Bullet-points

  • Louise recently ran as a candidate in the Victorian council elections, contesting the Melaleuca ward in the City of Kingston, in Melbourne’s South-East. [and came in second place]

  • She also ran the 'Victoria Says No' Twitter account
  • And has a Telegram account very clearly linked to that Twitter account and herself (used photos of herself as the avatar), which, among other account names, included 'Batwaff3n' (a reference to the Waffen-SS, the military branch of the Nazi Schutzstaffel). She constantly posted anti-Indigenous and antisemitic content, including while at work and about work as a Liberal Party member.
  • One of this account’s contributions is the creation of racist & antisemitic wildlife-themed Telegram sticker packs. These Telegram stickers are all in breach of the Australian Federal government’s anti-swastika legislation.

  • [...] this account made over 22,000 comments in the Telegram chat of Brisbane-based neo-Nazi Daniel Seery-Walker. They also commented in other chats belonging to Young Liberal turned neo-Nazi Stefan Eracleous and Proud Boy Tim Wilms. In June 2024, this account abruptly stops posting – only for a new account called Batwoman to take its place. As Batwoman, they explain that they lost access to their old account. This Batwoman account has posted nearly 3000 comments in Daniel Walker’s chat since June.

  • In 2022, Louise made a chaotic appearance on the podcast of American neo-Nazi Jovi Val as ‘Batwaffen’ to discuss her involvement in organising anti-Andrews ‘Kill The Bill’ rallies using the Dan Andrews Must Go Facebook group. When some trolls joined the call and accused her of a romantic entanglement with fellow ex Young Liberal-turned-NSN “treasurer” Stefan Eracleous, she explained that she didn’t have time to discuss such matters because she was doing the podcast from her desk at work.

  • Louise made a number of references to working on material directly for Advance Australia, the conservative propaganda outfit – though at times her content was knocked back for being too edgy.

  • At one point she rants about volunteers not showing up for the No campaign: "I've got fucking Peter duttons chief of staff manning one of my booths tomorrow morning even cos I had a meltdown over all the volunteers pulling out" [...] "where are all these tough white men huh" [...] "they're too busy looking at themselves in the mirror at the gym no doubt". Later, "Shouldve gotten those Nazis out on my booths". These comments are referring to the NSN, those weirdos who keep getting on the telly.
  • After joining an NSN chat, offering to make banners and advising them legally on the symbols ban, Moira Deeming’s ill-fated Let Women Speak rally happened. Louise Black said the Nazi salute "wasn't the best pr move", leading NSN members to reply with aggressively misogynistic remarks, assert she had an intellectual disability and then claim they were protecting women. For over an hour.
  • [A few months later] we found Louise complaining about the NSN in a [Melbourne] Proud Boys chat

  • Still, Louise Black’s relationship with the organisation had sufficiently thawed by the time anti-fascist influencer Tom Tanuki had produced a video highlighting the National Socialist Network’s internal paedophile problems that she was willing to put NSN SA leader Cameron Brodie-Hall into contact with a KC specialising in defamation.

  • We find it telling that, while Louise Black has been shut out of a number of extremist groups—due to her habit of spitting the dummy when her unsolicited advice is ignored—the one organisation which hasn’t seen fit to show her the door is the Victorian Liberal Party.

Join us to rally for the rights of the CFMEU and defend our democratic rights.

The new legislation targeting the CFMEU, stripping away its democratic processes based on unproven rumours is still standing. This is a dangerous precedent, threatening every union member’s right to organise and be heard. This precedent is undemocratic and anti-union! Let’s show up and demand these unjust laws be repealed!

It's important to understand the administration as a precedent, rather than specifically looking at the CFMEU. This has already had a chilling effect on other unions wanting to avoid similar repression, and just like many times before, sets up an attack for the Liberal Party to extend when next elected. That's why it's critical for other workers like us to stand together in solidarity, before there's no strong unions left to stand for ours. I urge those who can to come and bring friends, and those who can't to donate to the campaign - since the administration has seized the union's funds, they are relying on the generosity of other unions and political parties for printing fliers, buying flags, providing spaces and other basic organising needs.

See also this excellent article shared by @zero_gravitas recently: https://aussie.zone/post/14941033

The CFMEU are hosting rallies in various cities this Tuesday and are encouraging the community to join them. Despite any critiques we have of the union leadership, it is important to show solidarity in protesting the dictatorial union-busting administration laws, which were covered well in a post made here this week and which have a serious chilling effect on other unions and workers altogether as we fight for better conditions. Among other things, it's noteworthy that the CFMEU have been one of the few unions to strike in solidarity with Palestine encampment protestors at ANU.

"We encourage all members of the community to join us. CFMEU members deserve control over their Union, just like any other worker. Together, we stand strong to defend the future of our families and our union. ✊"

CHECK YOUR OWN CITY, the following are just some examples I've been able to find out so far, and more are being added as I've typed:

Linked is the USyd magazine article published by their Student’s Representative Council.

The article says 'over 500 students', although other sources such as Green Left estimate over 700, with even News Corp publications (The Australian, Sky News, etc.) claiming almost 800 students.

One part which isn't mentioned in those articles: Witnesses at the meeting told me there was some attempt to finish up the meeting before the second motion could be declared, which was counted with a chorus of "Let us stay!". Apparently the meeting was only scheduled for an hour and delayed by a filibuster from a S4P speaker.

When I try and upload an image for my avatar, I receive the message:

{"data":{"files":null,"msg":"ffprobe Failed with exit status: 1"},"state":"success"}

This happened with both a WebP and a PNG file, so I suspect it's a bug.

I can upload images fine here, and when I export my account details it shows a valid image URL for my avatar.
