Lovely page. I didn't know about Chinwag before.

I forget who was chatting to our admin a few months ago about Alcohol as a Verification if the government clamp down on Aussie Zone.

Of course, there have been arrests at the bridge from the moment it was opened.

Police said there would be a "significant" police presence throughout the city, including the Public Order and Riot Squad, mounted police and Highway and Traffic Control officers.

Probably not worth getting a bingo card going. I doubt there will be any real instigation from protesters, even by any very fringe groups (a bridge is just begging to get kettled), and given the court decision and general audience I doubt the police will pick this time to instigate either, but after cops previously punching protesters in the head and trampling them with horses, I honestly wouldn't be too surprised.

Haven't read the article yet so just going by the blurb: control is absolutely an aspect of it. Some companies have made an effort to have in-house food and on-site childcare for similar reasons, not just for convenience. There was some boss on record in an investment speech saying they didn't want workers to leave the building.

Yeah last time we named a space-thing Eris, Pluto stopped being a planet. Maybe it's a bad idea.

Last I heard, plenty of companies used Signal for certain secure messaging. And I don't just mean dodgy off the record stuff, I mean confidential things that Teams is too open for.

An article headline is a rhetorical question m8

Given the age of consent is 16

Generally true for most states, a couple are 17 and there are various special cases. I didn't realise how different it is between states and about authority rules (e.g. in some states, a person has a higher AoC for a guardian or teacher).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_of_consent_in_Oceania#Australia

I also didn't know how recently some states ended anti-homosexuality laws, esp Tasmania.

And I also didn't know that the federal 16 minimum age applies to Australians while outside of Australia. (Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth) Division 272 )

Like Hannah said, this violence against protesters isn't unique and their connections and platform are a privilege that other protesters don't have, so other victims are more easily brushed under the table.

500km isn't even from Sydney to Melbourne. Couldn't even launch them at Pine Gap.

Yeah, astroturf (both political and commercial marketing) is common but at least it's a lower barrier of entry to get heard, more grassroots can spring up.

The [Finance Sector Union] said the roles being advertised by CBA India had the exact same job titles as those impacted by the redundancies.

"We do not believe that the redundancies outlined in these change processes are in fact genuine redundancies and that in doing so, CBA has breached the terms of the Agreement,” [FSU National Secretary] Ms Angrisano said, pointing out that genuine redundancies mean the role is no longer required. This is the very definition of bad faith.”

“All Australians are paying for the sham redundancy actions of the CBA. Not only are Australian workers being unfairly and reasonably sacked but this is being subsidised by all taxpayers.

“Bona fide redundancies are taxed concessionally in the hands of the workers. It is especially disgusting that the nation’s richest company is also reducing the tax take as it makes the final payment to hundreds of Australians that we know are being sacked solely to have their work performed offshore.”

This video covers:

  • Why the NSN nazi org typically resort to cowardly flash-mobbing at 3:30am when no-one is around
  • What they aim to achieve through flash mobs, and in their own words, the effect they want to have in media
  • How the way we share news of these events can promote their group (increasing its funding and its ability to form a legal political party)
  • Exclusive footage of those nazis getting beaten up

Since this is an important topic, especially for social media users, please share this video to other communities!

(I was late to watch and share so that Anti-Racism Action event mentioned at the very end has already happened.)

Alternate article- Student general meeting demands USyd drop specious definition of antisemitism, cut ties with Israel - 18 May 2025

USyd response statement - University of Sydney does not condone student resolution: statement: 21 May 2025

Selected paragraphs:

Over 200 students packed a Student General Meeting at the University of Sydney this week, overwhelmingly rejecting the university’s new definition of antisemitism, designed to smear supporters of Palestine, and standing up to a crackdown on the right to protest.

The new Universities Australia definition of antisemitism, adopted by nearly all Australian universities, states that criticism of Israel can be antisemitic “when it calls for the elimination of the State of Israel”. It draws heavily on the widely-condemned International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition which has been opposed by organisations like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch.

In the end, only two students voted against any of the motions. It was an incredibly important moment for the movement on campus in a context where the right to support Palestine is under serious attack.

When two Zionist students spoke against the motions, calling pro-Palestine protesters antisemitic and condemning Hamas, the entire auditorium turned their backs on them. In response to their claims, an anti-Zionist student from a Jewish family spoke in support of the motion to support the one-state solution, telling the crowd: “I’m tired of being represented by Jewish people that think defending the state of Israel is valid, so I decided to come and speak for myself.”

In the lead-up to the meeting, the University had also threatened to cancel the room booking for the SGM unless the meeting was recorded and every student who wanted to attend presented their identification to security. These demands were dropped after opposition from the SRC.

I'm headed for the MUA march in town, it's great having a yarn with all the other workers in the pub afterwards.

This interview is notable for asking some questions from a different perspective to most opinions I've seen. The questions include: (paraphrased)

  • What are the aims of the tarrifs, and will they achieve it? (spoiler: lol no)
  • Do the US mega-rich support Trump’s tariffs?
  • How do they fit into Trump's broader foreign policy?
  • Do these tarrifs spell the end of globalisation?
  • Will these lead to further decoupling from the Global South, allowing them to pursue more autonomous development strategies?
  • What position should working-class forces take towards these tariffs and talk of retaliatory tariffs from other countries, whether in the Global North or South?

This post is for voting on /c/rage's Lemmyvision 2 song nomination.

Over the past few weeks, our community has submitted nominations, and we have until April 1 to pick a winner. Our Lemmyvision representative, @Gorgritch_umie_killa, has delegated our election to an independent agency, the Aussie.zone Eureka Commission (AEC).

Anyone who has recently commented a few times on aussie.zone before today is allowed to vote. (This includes, for example, some quokk.au users and various Australian Lemmy users on other instances)

This election uses preferential Instant-Runoff Voting^[wiki]^ just like our federal elections. Put simply, this means that if your [1] choice has no chance of election, your vote then runs over to your [2] choice, and so on, so there's no disadvantage in picking an unpopular song you love for your first votes, your vote is not 'wasted' at all. Vote sincerely.

A couple of the nominations weren't released during 2024, we've received confirmation from the organiser that they're allowed!

Here are the entries. Please listen to them all before voting:

Here is the ballot template for you to fill in. Copy and paste it as a new reply to this post, and number ALL boxes from 1 to 10 in order of your choice. [1] is your first preference, [10] is your last preference.

Summary:

Today, Australia’s 39 universities endorsed a dangerous and politicised definition of antisemitism which threatens academic freedom, will have a chilling effect on legitimate criticism of Israel, and risks institutionalising anti-Palestinian racism. They did so without meaningful consultation with Palestinian groups or diverse Jewish groups who are critical of Israel.

The Jewish Council of Australia strongly opposes the antisemitism definition developed by the Group of Eight (Go8) universities and adopted by Universities Australia. By categorising Palestinian political expression as inherently antisemitic, it will be unworkable and unenforceable, and stifle critical political debate, which is at the heart of any democratic society.

The definition dangerously conflates Jewish identities with support for the state of Israel and the political ideology of Zionism.

I was going to include some key dot points, but this statement is succinct enough that you should just read it, or at least skim it.

Anonymous Submission 🎄 24.12.24

Christmas came early when, this week, the NWA's door was shattered, and the inside of their office ruined with a mystery liquid.

Overnight, the head office of the fascist group National Workers Alliance (NWA) was attacked by anti-fascists. The NWA has been acting as a bridge for uniting the far right under the guise of "working class organizing".

NWA has hosted three fascist events this year, with members of neo-nazi groups such as NSN attending each one, along with other far right figures. They also march most Saturdays through so-called melbourne CBD.

This office was the location of the most recent (failed) recruitment event for NWA.

Solidarity with all anti-fascist action taken in this colony. We must continue to shut down fascism everywhere, in the streets, in the workplace and in the community.

No mercy for fascists.

I suppose the Polish Club are glad they didn't host this time. More context.

Was posting this over on another instance, so might as well cross-post here too.

In memory of Jimmy Carter.

gday everyone. In response to the recent meta discussion, I've volunteered as a moderator for /c/worldnews.

The main reasons I volunteered is to make this comm less generic and more suited to aussie.zone, as well as reducing the stream of drive-by spam posts.

There are a few ways I aim to achieve this:

  • We'll change the community title. I've already picked an example title, Overseas News, although this is temporary for now so critique and suggestions are welcome! I picked this name to keep the basic idea of this comm clear while distinguishing us from generic "World News" clones, and so even a federated Lemmy user searching for world news comms to post to will have a fair chance to see we aren't just an extra opportunity for attention. (I understand it might be confusing that this is still https://aussie.zone/c/worldnews, but changing the comm's id is much harder and needs a serious discussion first)
  • We'll create basic rules to codify our expectations. I've added some already, and again, feedback is wanted. I've tried to keep them direct and lenient, based on the previous meta discussion and prior deletions from the modlog. Once we reach a general consensus, I will apply them to posts from the past few months, to set the stage. [edit: this is now in motion]

Let me know if you have other ideas. I'll be pretty hands-off beyond removing blatant agenda spamming from outsiders and global rule violations, since this is a casual and open community and I have a job and hobbies ;)
