Nevermind, I got it when I disabled my PiHole. 🤷

Quite ironic, given the subject

That's a lot of words to say you rather play a single class instead of being faced with options

One of our key functionalities was disrupted because the link was behind an icon 🙃

Good moment to evaluate whether that's the best solution going forwards!

Font Awesome API outage (status.fortawesome.com)
submitted 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) by donuts@lemmy.world to c/technology@lemmy.world

~~Font Awesome is currently experiencing an outage, so many webpages will have a broken UI or even broken functionality if there was any tied to icons (ask me how I know)~~

It has been fixed. Back to work!

Figured I'd make a meme too:

Haha that's a cool story though! I thought it was some weapon or tool like a throwing axe or something

Can I give you shit for the wallpaper tho?

Here are the objectives that they want to assess with some examples:

"(...) explore options on how to improve consumer protection in the online environment and increase their trust, including by assessing the need for targeted prohibitions, for example with respect to:

  • preventing traders from using dark patterns and other unfair techniques that pressure, deceive and manipulate consumers online;

So we're talking hidden / obscured cancellation mechanics, hidden costs, misleading language. Fortnite 1 / Fortnite 2

  • giving consumers greater control of their online experience by addressing addictive design features that lead consumers, particularly minors, to spend excessive time and money on online goods and services;

This addressee (literal) gambling and FOMO-style design, very present in mobile gaming. Don't have links for this one, but pretty much all the big names are mentioned in lawsuits over the past years

  • addressing problematic features of digital products such as in video games, in particular as concerns their impact on minors;

This is a broad one, presumably to identify key mechanics like loot boxes in any variety and gacha style mechanics and how they impact minors. Example study

  • addressing problematic personalisation practices, including situations where consumer vulnerabilities are targeted for the purposes of personalised advertising and pricing;

Targeting your weaknesses to extract more money from you is not fair. Especially if these weaknesses are any addictions or unhealthy habits. Star Citizen

  • preventing harmful practices by influencers (e.g. the lack of disclosure of commercial communications, the promotion of harmful products to their followers and clarifying the responsibilities of the companies that collaborate with them);

Content Creators / Influencers are the new way to market products to consumers, especially children. Transparency with regards to sponsored content is necessary, as these creators can have a huge influence. Jenner / Celsius (pdf)

  • addressing unfair practices related to the price (e.g. “drip” pricing, “starting from” prices if the trader applies dynamic pricing, percentage/value discounts that mislead the consumer as to the nature of the promotion);

Pretty straight forward I think. You can't display a €99 pack and list it as "starting from 4,99" where that price belongs to the cheaper pack.

  • addressing problems with digital contracts (e.g. difficult cancellations of subscriptions, auto-renewals or free trials converted into paid subscriptions, use of chatbots for customer service).

See the first point about dark patterns, this is just in a wider scope to emphasise it's not just online but specifically about subscriptions and cancelling them. Cancelling should be as easy as signing up. US Gov vs Adobe

Now I don't have time to find more links, but there's plenty of more material out there. I only shared some examples and some of them might have been resolved or rejected by court by now.

It doesn't seem to be copying the mechanics of Papers, Please as much as the mechanics of Schedule 1. It does use the idea of Papers, Please, but it's executed differently.

A lot of games are similar or riffing on each other, which is fine. But aside from using your finger to make a hole in the soil, the planting pot mechanics felt too similar.

Okay so I'm going to echo the rest here and say it's kinda wild. I imagine this is the idea with the chaos subtitle and all, but it might be a little too much of half-polished features in order to be enticing.

People will see this and call it a Schedule I rip, especially with the planting in a pot mechanics, so I'd try and make it a bit less obvious and change up some parts.

If you're going for unrealistic chaos, you should really double down instead, so it's really clear that it shouldn't be taken seriously as it doesn't take itself seriously.

Leaving a comment as a reminder, currently on a limited data plan and Steam likes to autoplay videos.

Will check back in later today to share some thoughts

That's right, American free speech ends at your country's borders, whether that's geographical or online.

As they say, drunk words are sober thoughts. So no, unwise.

As we tend to say in Europe, the US is a third-world country wearing a Gucci belt

I've never seen this before in my life! Fuzzy black petals? Chalice like stem? Very cool and very mysterious.

Edit: I realize this isn't technically a house plant as it is outdoors. Hope that's okay 😅

But I'm sure it's just because we humans are so annoying

In my language we call them Church Owls instead of Barn Owls because they nest in churches a lot.

Went to a demonstration slash workshop today where different owls and other birds of prey were introduced and talked about. Very interesting day!

After Profile effects and Avatar decorations, you can now buy Name Plates for your profile.

Honestly, this is the type of monetization that I dislike the least, considering the alternatives. You don't even have to have Nitro afaik, the premium subscription that allows mostly cosmetic perks

Discord has begun requiring some users in the United Kingdom and Australia to verify their age through a facial scan before being permitted to access sensitive content. The chat app’s new process has been described as an “experiment,” and comes in response to laws passed in those countries that place guardrails on youth access to online platforms. Discord has also been the target of concerns that it does not sufficiently protect minors from sexual content.

You might remember this post where I asked about how sorting by "Hot" gives you a lot of new posts that were posted in quick succession, making it look like "New".

I was recommend by a few to use "Scaled", so recently I did. Except this felt even worse: I saw new posts that were posted in succession with 0 upvotes, one having 1 upvote.

Isn't this weird? Or am I doing it wrong?

Not sure if this fits here, feel free to remove if not.

I'm sure the algorithm must be working as intended, but I always see a lot of rapid-fire posts under each other when browsing "Hot". Is this normal or am I missing a setting?

Part of the abstract:

Recent findings on the abilities of birds to see in the ultraviolet (UV) spectrum have expanded questions about plumage coloration to include the luminescent characteristics of bird plumage, including fluorescence. Yet little is understood about the function of fluorescent pigments, and very few studies have attempted to describe their distribution throughout a population. In this study, we used a fluorometer to measure variation in the amount of fluorescent pigments (e.g. porphyrins) extracted from the secondary coverts of Long-eared Owls (Asio otus) migrating through the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in the spring of 2020 (n = 99). We found that age and sex were the strongest predictors of fluorescent pigment concentration, wherein older and female birds had the highest fluorescent pigment concentrations.

I understand this is not your regular Superb Owl post, but I found it mighty interesting!
