Have you ever looked at the laundry list of "vice presidents" on the reddit inc site? It's severely mismanaged from the top down, it comes as no surprise that the right hand doesn't know what the left one is stroking.
Gaslighting is exactly right. They also did a fair amount of goalpost shifting, cited non-existent rules to engage in punitive/retaliatory behavior against anyone who wasn't 100% on the party line, etc.
