Seatbelts are most effective for restraining passengers during sudden deceleration. They don’t do that much for a side impact, unfortunately.

Quite a lot of their staff were affected by the COVID detention in the public housing towers in Flemington and North Melbourne. Now some local businesses and groups pitched in to help people out. Some examples:

  • Sikh Brotherhood were the first to start getting food to people in isolation
  • SES dealt with getting food and medication into the buildings while following biosecurity protocols
  • The local mosque on Boundary Rd coordinated collecting donations and getting them to people
  • The guy from Adam’s Fresh greengrocer helped deliver donated food (unfortunately he defaulted on the lease on his shop since then)
  • KFL Supermarket called all their affected staff for welfare checks, etc. and to see if there was anything they could do
  • CoHealth provided a huge amount of support
  • Coles, Woolworths and HelloFresh made regular grocery deliveries for all the affected people, on their own dime

On the other hand, Laksa King didn’t even call any of their staff for a welfare check, and tried to use it as an opportunity to profit. They tried to get people to buy food from them to then donate to their affected staff, then tried to play it as them being generous. It was totally callous and uncaring.

Also notably absent when it actually mattered were the local Việt catholic church Thánh Vinh Sơn/St Vincent’s. They did nothing when people actually needed it, then showed up afterwards.

The whole thing left a bad taste in the mouths of a significant chunk of the Việt community. It was one of those, “now you find out who your real friends are,” situations. The African community, the Muslim community, and “big business” did a lot more to help a brother out than the local Việt community. Also, props to the Sikh Brotherhood for almost instant response, despite not having much of a community connection there at all.

  • A lot of Melbourne isn’t served very well by public transport
  • Melbourne public transport largely assumes you’re travelling to or from the CBD – if you aren’t, it can be effectively useless
  • Standard business hours a thing so that you know other businesses will be open around the same time, facilitating communication, so everyone needs to get to work in a relatively short time window

I wasn’t aiming the comment at you specifically – just throwing it out there because laksa was mentioned. Good on you for doing it the hard way, though. Always more satisfying.

The other week, after almost tripping for the millionth time, I told my kids that if they kept leaving their notebook computer chargers where they're liable to get trodden on, I'd confiscate them. Sure enough, the next day nothing's changed, so I confiscated one. I did return it after a while. But since then, they've kept the chargers and cables neatly out of the way.

BTW although Laksa King still makes a damn good laksa, pleaser reconsider whether you want to support them after how they treated their staff during COVID detention.

From what I've read, after he gets someone to sit on him and hold his arms down, he starts kind of grinding his crotch against them. Definitely seems like it would qualify as molestation.

I just hope it doesn't stop people from helping when someone else actually does have an epileptic fit. I've seen it happen a couple of times.

I don't think the poster is encouraging vigilantism. It's more warning people to be on their guard and not fall for this guy's ploy.

I lived in Melbourne for about a decade solid, and have split time between Melbourne and Sydney for over a decade since then, and am also lucky enough not to have encountered him. If he pulls this sexual assault stunt somewhat regularly, why hasn’t he been put away?

My sleep cycle is very fucked up, so I often stay up all night and day to reset it.

I do that, too. Coffee doesn't stop me from sleeping, though.

I've read the cited study. It's about longevity specifically - you're unlikely to live longer by taking more than 7,000 steps per day. It says nothing about other benefits, or lack thereof. I know I'm fitter, have better lung capacity, better endurance, better pain tolerance from putting up with blisters on my feet, etc. from covering big distances consistently. Judging from comments, it's good for my appearance, too.
