I'm setting up a computer with linux mint debian editon, and the computer is going to be used by a lot of people who sign in via AD. I have custom display settings (background, pinned applications, theme, custom menu icon) that I would like to apply to all users, but right now they only show up when I log into the account that I set it up on.

Also, is there a way to get a custom firefox esr config to apply to all users as well? I want to remove pocket and make duckduckgo the default browser.

Many thanks.

This is awesome! I had heard about the cross breeding efforts to restore them but didn't hear whether or not they were successful. Glad they've gotten established.

As someone from one of the most obese states in the union, the core of the issue is most definitely not portion sizes. Food quality is shit and most people will eat ultraprocessed foods on the daily because money is tight for most people and fresh/healthy food is hella expensive assuming there's even access to it. If you have the same amount of calories in ultrprocessed food vs real food, your body will still gain more weight from the ultra processed one because it is less satiating because your body burns through it much faster.

Small scale organic farming used to be the norm in my grandma's time, but nowadays younger people don't know what an okra plant looks like or cracked open a pecan. Additionally if you're even able to access and afford fresh produce it's mainly water and is not nutritionally dense. This is an issue with the entire food system that's been built on shipping stuff from far away and profit incentives. Not to mention the targeted advertising of ultra processed foods to kids...

Also, there's virtually no public transit and the small amount of pedestrian and bike infrastructure is laughable and outright dangerous. You have to have a car to get to most places and most places require a lot of driving to get to depending. That means sitting down for most of the day. It's hard for most people to get exercise in daily life without being super intentional about it, and a lot of people are overworked and underpaid on top of that, so they understandably just wanna relax. As with most things in life, the answer is always complicated.

Southern food has entered the chat.

In all seriousness, southern food is some of the best food the US has to offer IMO. There's a shitton of diversity within the category and it has a lot of flavor and spice.

I love Lemmy (slrpnk.net)

It's brought me joy in life and I've learned so many new things. How cool is it that we get to enjoy all of this cool stuff for free (as in cost) and free (as in freedom)?

That is all. Hope everyone has a nice day.

I hate to break it to you but in many parts of the rural US, Walmart is the only option to buy things. They have monopolized and killed small grocers, mechanics, and pharmacies. Walmart is the only place within a reasonable distance that I can get my (lifesaving) medication for a cost that I can afford. I hate doing it but there is literally no other option for me.

It makes a whole lot of sense the other way around. Script writers speak like Americans.

I regret to inform you that it has become a specific cabbage patch.

[–] countrypunk@slrpnk.net 23 points 1 week ago (4 children)

I somehow misread garbage as cabbage for this.

Good idea. I'll play around with that too.

I'm curious as to why Lemmy rarely shows up in search results on the main internet even if there is a post related to the search input. I've only ever seen a Lemmy result if Lemmy is specified. Is this because we're still relatively small or some other reason?

There's this effect that I've heard in a couple of songs. The best way that I can describe it is the way that some video game characters talk (especially animal crossing) where they're speaking gibberish but it also sounds robotic somehow.

Two songs with an example of this sound:

My Head Hurts -strxwberrymilk

Sunshine Recorder -Boards of Canada

For the first one, the sound I'm talking about comes in at about 1:30, and for the second it comes in at about 2:50.

Really interested in recreating this sound. Any ideas as to how to achieve this are welcome.

Edit: found the exact sound I was looking for. It's called Glitch and is a plugin: https://illformed.org/

A friend of mine had purchased all of the Sims games and wanted to see if they could play it on Linux and if so they'd switch to it. The issue is that while the Sims games work on steam, they had purchased it through the EA app, which does not have a native Linux version. It turns out that if you purchase it in the EA app, it won't let you transfer it to Steam even though they bought and owned the damn game. Very ridiculous policy.

This is copied from a Reddit post that I found. I figured this solution should be archived in a non-Reddit place in text format so that other people would know how to fix this.

In this video, I cover how to install and use the EA App on Linux using Lutris, a universal launcher that supports many game launcher services.

https://youtu.be/cLZw8hiu25o

This video will cover the standalone installation of the EA App on Linux, and not when it is launched separately by a game purchased in Steam.

Step 1. Install Wine.

https://github.com/lutris/docs/blob/master/WineDependencies.md

The installation of Wine will differ slightly depending on your Linux distribution, but in all cases, you will be installing it using a package manager.

Although Lutris does uses its own Wine builds, it is still recommended to install all of Wine dependencies to ensure a working installation.

On the Wine Dependencies page on the Lutris Wiki, scroll down to find your distribution’s family and then follow the instructions.

Step 2. Install Lutris.

https://lutris.net/

To download Lutris, click on the Download link at the top of the main page, and then follow the installation instructions for your distribution.

Again, much like Wine, it is likely you will use your distribution’s package manager to install Lutris. Once installation is finished, launch Lutris using your application launcher.

Step 3. Install EA App.

To install the EA App using Lutris, click on the + button at the top left corner, and choose the Search the Lutris website for installers option.

In search bar, type in EA App.

You will need to scroll down to find it, but the option you want is the EA App, 2022, Windows entry.

Click on it, and you should be presented by two options, choose the Standard option by clicking the Install button.

From here, specify an installation location, review the files, and click Continue to start the installation process.

If you get asked to install any dependencies, click Yes.

Eventually, you will be presented with the installation wizard for the EA App, so click Let us Go to proceed.

Shortly after, you will be greeted by a blue screen, but you can close this, and the installation process will finish successfully.

Step 4. Launch EA App.

Now that the EA App is installed, double click the entry in Lutris to launch and you will be asked to sign in with your credentials.

Once signed in, the process is identical to Windows, you can browse through all available games to purchase or install ones already in your library.

Once a game is installed, double click to launch.

One final thing to note, I recommend disabling the In-Game overlay as this can prevent older games from launching, something that also happens on Windows.

To do that, click on the hamburger menu at the top left, navigate to Settings, Application, and toggle off the In-Game overlay.

I don't wanna use Spotify anymore and would like to build my own offline collection of music. The issue is, I have hundreds of albums saved on Spotify that I love listening to. Downloading each individual song would be a royal pain in the ass to do. A lot of the stuff on the megathread doesn't seem to work anymore for music specifically. I also would like to have high quality audio files. Any ideas how to go about doing this? I have no idea how torrenting works.
