I got to do the demo today, and I was pretty bullish on the passthrough before trying it.
I was still super impressed. Obviously people in the room can see you have the headset on, but outside of a very little noise, it looks almost exactly the same as not wearing it.
Yeah, if they weren't sourced by people giving them to them under other pretenses I wouldn't judge.
There are licenses that allow distribution for free for personal use, but don't allow distribution without a contract if it's connected to you selling content in any way.

Buying the apps isn't possible because this malicious extortionate bullshit makes them more money.
No one's abandoning the platform. This is clickbait horseshit.
The features it offers blow doors off of anything else on the market, and the "competition" (which doesn't actually exist because there's nothing else with passthrough sufficient for AR) also needs third party apps to play content.
They're not for everyone, but I love them. When it's warm enough, I really like the V-Aqua, because they have nice grip on wet rocks and I can comfortably climb in and out of the water without getting water logged (I think the movement of water is fascinating and like playing with the camera with it).
The other ones are nice, too, but do have to be washed more regularly because they absorb sweat and start to stink if you don't.
I have a couple pairs now of Vibram Five Fingers and they're the most comfortable shoes I own. My feet are pretty wide, so my choices tend to be "squash the fuck out of my little toe" or "wide but heavy as hell". I went barefoot places I could regularly (and still do camping when putting on shoes is too much for a short trip or whatever), but these let me do similar everywhere. I find hiking a lot easier when I can feel the ground and use my toes scrambling over rocks and in streams, etc.
Just cutting off the bottom of your shoes is dumb as hell.
It means you'll use a third party app to watch content, just like you do for pretty much every type of content on iPhone and Android.
Just no one has published one for Apple vision yet, because no one has had one.
Too bad what they accept doesn't matter.
