The GNU Project has announced a major milestone: native 64-bit support for GNU Hurd is now available through GNU Guix.

If you are not familiar with it, let me shed some light. GNU Hurd is the kernel of the GNU operating system. Unlike the Linux kernel, however, Hurd uses a microkernel design based on GNU Mach. Core services run as separate user-space servers that communicate through message passing. Launched in the early 1990s, Hurd has remained largely experimental.

For decades, GNU Hurd was limited to 32-bit x86 systems. The absence of x86_64 support restricted its use on modern hardware. But not anymore. With 64-bit builds now available in Guix, Hurd can run natively on current x86_64 systems.

Alongside familiar feelings of fear and uncertainty, the newly escalated conflict with Iran has forged a renewed mood of national unity, in which the usual political and social divisions of Israel’s fractured society appeared to have been subsumed by a collective sense that a conflict long willed by so many had finally arrived.

Speaking from inside a shelter as the sounds of missiles and explosions shook the city, Orly Hareuveny, a physiotherapist, told Middle East Eye that Israelis had become so accustomed to war that it was now a distinct characteristic of Israeli life - “the same as the weather is for people in England”.

Hareuveny considers herself a leftist and a supporter of co-existence with Palestinians, political views that have been marginalised in the Israel of Benjamin Netanyahu’s far-right coalition and its three-year genocidal war in Gaza.

March 1, 2026

In the first hours of the US-Israeli strikes on Iran, opponents of the war and critics of the Islamic Republic from across the political spectrum quickly made their divergent voices heard on Farsi social media.

While anti-war activists were swift to revive the Farsi hashtag “No to War” on Saturday, pro-monarchy groups and individuals, led by Reza Pahlavi, called for an escalation of attacks on Iran.

Pahlavi, the Israel-aligned son of the country’s last shah, has been at the helm of a movement advocating the restoration of the monarchy. Since Israel’s 12-day war on Iran last year, his camp has mounted an aggressive media campaign against rival opposition voices.

While Democrat leadership is yelling from the rooftops that "fascism is coming!", they are also trying to take away the rights of people, particularly minorities and the poor, from being able to own firearms. Measure 114, which was largely struck down by the courts as unconstitutional, has been re-written as HB 4145 and passed the Oregon state senate. While we have ICE executing citizens in the streets, Oregon dems think this is the time to make gun ownership harder.

Both of Eugene's reps voted to pass this bill: Floyd Prozanski (bill sponsor!) and Lisa Fragala. A signature by Kotek is a given at this point.

Among other things, this bill:

  • Doubles the amount of time for state bureaucrats to issue the required permit to lawfully purchase a firearm from 30 days to 60 days. If a date goes poorly and you end up with a stalker, you shouldn't need to wait two whole months to purchase protection. Because you know the cops will never care about enforcing a restraining order, assuming you could even get one in the first place.
  • Increases the cost for the permit by more than 130%, from $65 to $150, a clear attempt to make lawful gun ownership unobtainable through financial barriers. Rights, especially self defense, should not be paywalled.
  • Carves out on and off duty law enforcement from the permit requirement and magazine capacity limitations, creating different classes of people for lawful firearm ownership. "Rules for thee, not for me"
  • Changes the implementation date of the magazine ban and permit requirements.
  • Includes a government maintained de facto registry of firearm owners, with their personal data and fingerprints to be shared with the FBI.

It may feel pointless to contact reps but I know that they do actually read (and occasionally, respond!) to these inquiries. Public pressure can be powerful!

Why am I cross-posting .ml content?

I cross-post from .ml to the nearest relevant non-.ml comm to reduce the influence of .ml comms and indirectly, the instance as a whole, to make it an easier decision for other instance admins to defederate because one key reason I identified that admins don't want to defederate is because .ml still has some very large comms and some niche comms.

Megathread on the issue

Some highlights from the link:

"Don't worry guys, the Uyghur Genocide was REALLY just birth control! ~dessalines, .ml admin, dev https://lemmy.world/post/30580167

"See! nobody died IN Tiananmen Square, just AROUND it, so it doesn't count!!" ~ Davel, .ml admin https://lemmy.world/post/30673342

.ml admin, Nutomics continued transphobia https://lemmy.world/post/29222558 The original transphobic Comment from Nutomic: https://lemmy.world/post/18236068

"NK is actually good and anything counter to that is Western propaganda!" ~dessalines, .ml admin, dev https://lemmy.world/post/31595035

General negative sentiment to other instances who haven't "seen the way" yet ~davel, .ml admin https://lemmy.world/post/27426510

"If you don't support Russia then you just don't understand geopolitics" ~dessalines, .ml admin, dev https://lemmy.world/post/27352415

And so so much documentation on clear heavy handed censorship and bias also on the link. So much I can't even put them all here because this comment would be really long.

I believe the behavior of its admins (the main admins are Lemmy devs) does harm to the overall growth of the Lemmy-verse and maybe even the Thrediverse (since Lemmy kinda kicked off the Thrediverse) because of its association with the devs of Lemmy and their insistence to use .ml as their personal political platform to spread harmful propaganda

On the outside, bringing up Lemmy frequently leads to comments like "Lemmy? Isn't that the place with a bunch of tankies?" Or "Tried Lemmy, but found it full of pro Russia crap so I left". The best way forward from that I see is to either widely defederate from .ml like the rest of the Triad, or pressure them to put a fair and unbiased as possible admin team.

That's one problem it solves, but NPM is really just a frontend for Nginx Reverse Proxy.

And a reverse proxy is one of the basic security steps you need to take when exposing something to the open Internet. You want everything forwarded through it and spend most of your time hardening it and the server it's running on (and it should be the only thing running on that server, all other services should be running elsewhere, ideally)

This is a conflation of "AI" and shitty AI companies. The AI technology, which can be fully open source, is what's here to stay and it is a useful tool. Not the end all be all by any means, but, just like a drill or hammer it has its uses. And just like a drill or hammer, you can use it for improper use but get a less optimal result

Boycotting the tech itself, to include full open source and selfhosted AI is what's not going to work, but the shitty companies probably will come and go.

The real solution is to roll up the sleeves and built an a version of this technology that's open, transparent, and community driven.

No, the solution is to educate the general populace about the extreme harms of AI on our economy and our environment and our sovereignty and our education and to show them that we're getting absolutely nothing in exchange except for lining the pockets of CEOs and twist the arm of the gov to get involved in some sort of regulation...

Both of these things can happen, AI can be harmful. Any tool can be harmful and for dangerous ones we do educate people, to varying degrees depending on the tool. And just like any tool, it has its restrictions AND promote open and transparent systems over the ones that do line CEO pockets

A little off topic, but I noticed you're new and have been posting to the writing .ml comm in addition to the other comms.

So, a lot of us have been boycotting the .ml instance in one way or another covered in the Megathread here https://lemmy.world/post/29072279 so wanted to see if you'd join

If you'd like another writing comm to post to !writing@slrpnk.net is another one that could use good contributions to

I'm just waiting for BBS^2^ to get going on it, I sadly was a tad too young to get in on its prime, but maybe I can catch the train this time lmao
