it’s because we’re training so many Ph.D.’s and convincing them all that the only way to remain a scientist is to stay in academia. It’s not, and that hasn’t been true for a long time.

What's the alternative? Go work for the military? A corporation?

If I was a scientist I'd sure as fuck want to work in academia.

having a hard time contemplating this. imagining a time in the US when something like heating was collectivized instead of being left to the individual to manage. sounds like a pretty big project to design and implement.

I don't vape but I got interested a few years ago so I looked into it. Pretty well convinced it is likely an extremely viable harm reduction tool to reduce cig smoking which is a scourge on the working class. Particularly people who have certain mental health or cognitive situations that make nicotine super attractive, and even helpful.

There are great arguments for strong regulation of course. But the anti-vape activists have various problems. Moralism, misanthropy, bad logic, lies. Many of the problems ascribed to vapes are clearly failures of regulation that could have been avoided, not inherent features of the chemical or devices.

Hope you manage to find a 5 gallon bucket of nicotine to keep you for the next few decades.

How do you find the ear pads? Are they specific to the device or can I get generic ones for my cheap ass headphones? I tried to make some to replace the flaking gross ones I had but what I came up with is extremely funny looking and also doesn't work.

What part of the box is the cat going to pee on? Aiming error and they get the walls? I assume it'll be on the inside?

In that case it wouldn't matter how it looks so just keep an eye on the trash for an impermeable sheet material you can fix on the inside. Plexiglass would be perfect but see what the universe sends to you. Or you could buy something low cost like laminate flooring... go to a big hardware store and look around they have many different waterproof materials. Unless you really enjoy the process, or what to learn it for another project, I think doing some expensive elaborate wood finishing would be a waste. If you have already built it, it'll be a pain in the ass to now finish the inside smoothly.

I found that diluting oil poly with mineral spirits made applying it smoothly easier. I started 50/50 then either increased or decreased the amount of poly on subsequent layers. I think increased. And use plain mineral spirits to remove dust after sanding between coats.

If you don't want your cat to sit on something you can't really put it on the floor in the same room as a cat.

could also be thyroid

thyroid supplements are one of those little medical things that don't attract much attention to but a lot of people need them and can be a total life changer.

if you aren't depressed it sounds like some kind of physical problem. should consider bloodwork if at all available.

My usual coping mechanism for unpleasant things is to imagine an alternate/future way. So I feel less fatalistic. Laundry is just the most intractable problem. Every 1-4 weeks for years n years I am contemplating it. All it's gotten me is a better understanding of the problems.

The closest to a workaround I've found so far is having the largest supply of underwear and socks you can afford/store as they are otherwise the limiting factor in how far you can go between trips. A union organizer taught me that. But it doesn't address any of the actual problems.
