Turns out Sumer Is Icumen In is an absolute banger.

If he was open to change his mind, that's cool. It's hard to find good sources for anything going on in this controversy, especially considering the fact that it seems to come up any time anyone is talking about Ladybird. But by how little is out there it at least seems wrong to write the guy off as downright hateful.

I hope it got to a point where trans people are comfortable contributing to the project.

Apparently the developer is/was one of those guys who gets into fights over pronouns, maintaining that assuming everyone on the planet is male is somehow apolitical while inclusive language is not.

I honestly doubt it is/was hate as much as ignorance, but I'm not particularly well informed and I don't know the guy at all.

Yeah, I honestly have no idea. Probably a mix of both.

If people are silenced from sharing their stories because they also ask for aid this seems potentially bad. It's also unfortunate that it's hard to say what has really gone down since the record is deleted, though it's probably available somewhere online.

In either case I think it illustrates quite clearly the advantages of true decentralization for censorship resistance. What is allowed or not on Bluesky is decided by a tiny board of Americans, with no meaningful way of bypassing their moderation decisions.

I love this! Totally agree with @tetris11@lemmy.ml, the feeling of alienation here is fantastic and works on so many levels.

Could be referring to Bluesky's silencing of Palestinian voices.

I've seen the open letter linked in that article shared a few times on Mastodon. I'm not sure how big a deal 3000 boosts makes it on Bluesky. But browsing the thread quick and seeing it full of posts shared by the publisher of the letter being deleted is a bit worrying.

I think the opening quotes in How the Irish Became White tell an amazing story in just a few sentences:

The Irish, who, at home, readily sympathize with the oppressed everywhere, are instantly taught when they step upon our soil to hate and despise the Negro.... Sir, the Irish-American will one day find out his mistake.

— Frederick Douglass, May 10, 1853

Passage to the United States seems to produce the same effect upon the exile of Erin as the eating of the forbidden fruit did upon Adam and Eve. In the morning, they were pure, loving, and innocent; in the evening guilty.

— The Liberator, August 11, 1854

The Irish are the blacks of Europe. So say it loud— I’m black and I’m proud.

— The Commitments, 1991

Paddy might have worked as an insult way back when we thought America was anything else than a huge fucking mistake. Today it's a badge of honour—the worst thing to ever happen to the Irish was "becoming white".

I guess he lives off the idea that any attention is good for him, which seems to be working out pretty well so far. So on a personal level changing a salient policy every week makes sense.

Whether it's good for America... Let's just say I'd care more if they didn't vote for him twice.

I'm sure you could have a fruitful conversation with the crowd insisting it was written by AI. :)

[–] cabbage@piefed.social 8 points 2 months ago

Maybe the question we should ask is not "how much does Tom Cruise love movies", but rather "where is Shelly".

[–] cabbage@piefed.social 10 points 2 months ago (3 children)

This is just obviously not the case to anyone who bothers reading it. It's an original piece of writing.

The only thing that could hint at AI here is the use of em-dashes, which is a bullshit tell—I use them all the time myself as well. They're right there for anyone with a compose key on Linux.

I love that Christian Bale based his portrayal of Patrick Bateman off Tom Cruise.
