You can be a hero in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 by saving Painter Neal between all your sick grinding and tricks.

During Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4‘s campaign, the San Francisco level is one of the first in which you need to complete specific goals to unlock the next locations. Even though the “Save the Painter Neal!!!” mission was present in the original game, the steps to complete it changed considerably in the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 version.

To assist you in ticking off items in the missions list and progressing in the game, we prepared this Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 guide explaining how to save Painter Neal.

How to save Painter Neal in THPS 4

A Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 screenshot showing a character next to a boulder which players need to use to complete the Save the Painter Neal!!! goal.

As the initial introduction of the San Francisco map explains, Painter Neal is a man in trouble at the pier. If you don’t save him, well, Neal will become the next meal of a giant shark who’s just waiting for the poor man to fall into the water. You can save them with the power of skateboarding.

The first step is to break the wire holding a large boulder in front of the pier. To do so, you need to slide all over it from one side to the other, which means keeping balance while your character goes up, around, and then down from the wire.

A Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 screenshot showing a character sliding on a write circling a boulder.

The best strategy to break the wire is to hold your character in place right in front of one of the wire’s ends, jump, and start sliding. If you don’t cover the entire length of the wire, it won’t break. If you’re struggling to get across the full length, consider turning a couple of mods on. To activate them, pause the game and access the Option menu, where you find the Game Mods section. Using mods doesn’t affect the completion of challenges and you can turn them off whenever you feel like.

With the boulder released, you still need to give it a push so it will roll toward the pier and save the painter in distress. Although simple, pushing the giant sphere requires you to perform a specific move: a wallplant, which involves placing a foot on a wall.

A Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 screenshot showing a characterfacing a boulder in the Los Angeles level.

Like when starting to slide over the wire, the best starting position to hit the boulder with a wallplant is by stopping next to it while facing the pier. When ready, perform an ollie then a wallplant.

If you need more help completing this mission, you can go to the settings and change the wallplant command options. You want to go with the more straightforward option that sets the ollie button to perform the wallplant as well. For example, on PlayStation 5, you will be using the X button for both actions. By using this specific configuration, you just need to do an ollie and then press the same button right after to automatically execute a wallplant.

The boulder will roll toward the pier and save Painter Neal, crossing this mission off your to-do list.

YouTube is preparing to sunset the Trending section that shows users which videos are currently going viral on the platform. The Trending page and Trending Now list will be removed within the “next couple of weeks,” according to YouTube, with the platform instead shifting its attention toward expanding YouTube Charts that rank top-performing content.

YouTube is directing users to lean on personalized recommendations and YouTube Charts to explore new videos ahead of the Trending page removal. YouTube Charts allow users to see the most popular content for specific categories, which currently includes music videos, podcasts, and movie trailers. The platform says that it will add more content category charts “over time,” and that trending gaming videos can still be found under the Gaming Explore page in the meantime.

“Back when we first launched the Trending page in 2015, the answer to ‘what’s trending’ was a lot simpler to capture with a singular list of viral videos that everyone was talking about,” the company said in a blog post. “But today, trends consist of many videos created by many fandoms, and there are more micro-trends enjoyed by diverse communities than ever before.”

Viewers now learn about viral video trends from a variety of different sources, including Shorts, search suggestions, and other platforms like TikTok, which YouTube says has significantly reduced Trending page traffic, “especially over the last five years.” Creators have also criticized YouTube for demanding far higher viewership numbers to appear in the Trending section compared to branded accounts that post movie trailers, TV clips, and other traditional media, suggesting the experience doesn’t entirely reflect what videos are actually popular on the platform.

Creators who use the Trending page to research video ideas are being directed to instead use the Inspiration Tab in YouTube Studio, which provides AI-generated content suggestions. YouTube also says it’s working on new ways to help boost discovery for up-and-coming creators on the platform, such as the Hype promotional system it released last year that lets viewers amplify videos to a platform-wide leaderboard.

A cartoon illustration of a blonde-haired man in his mid-20s flanked on either side by his mother and father as they stand together in front of a fence.

King of the Hillis finally coming back after 15 years, and in the revival’s new trailer, the world has become a very different place, I tell you what.

Set years after Hank (Mike Judge) has been working in Saudi Arabia on a propane project to secure his and Peggy’s (Kathy Najimy) retirement, King of the Hill‘s fourteenth season follows the patriarch back home to Arlen, where he’s taken aback and how much things have changed. Boomhauer (Judge), Bill (Stephen Root), and Dale (Toby Huss, taking over for the late Johnny Hardwick) are all still around and down to knock back a few drinks, but they all feel out of place in an Arlen where gender-neutral bathrooms and gig-working drivers have become commonplace.

Bobby (Pamela Adlon) seems to be faring better in Dallas where he’s become a chef and still hangs out with Connie (Lauren Tom) and a few of their other childhood friends. But the trailer makes it clear that Hank’s going to have a hard time adjusting to his new life as a senior citizen in a town full of people who see him as a bit of a relic.

After such a long pause, it’s going to be great to see the Hills dealing with all of the aspects of modern day life that have just become normal in the time since King of the Hill went off the air. But what’s probably going to make or break the show when it drops on August 4th is how well its balances its jokes with its heartfelt messaging.

Netflix’s main Squid Game series may be over, but a second season of the Squid Game reality show is debuting in just a few months – and a third season is on the way.

On Thursday, Netflix announced that season 2 of Squid Game: The Challenge will premiere on November 4th. “In Season 2 of the gripping game show inspired by the original scripted series, 456 brand-new contestants will enter the ultimate test of strategy, alliances, and endurance as they compete for a life-changing $4.56 million prize,” Netflix says. “The new season raises the stakes higher than ever with shocking twists and never-before-played games.”

Netflix has also opened casting for season 3, and the company says that players who win at its real-life Squid Game: The Experience locations in New York and London will “receive priority in the casting process.” The company hasn’t said when season 3 will debut.

Squid Game’s third and final season premiered at the end of last month. I haven’t watched it myself, but our reviewer Sara Merican says the uneven season leaves the door wide open – which perhaps isn’t surprising given how big the show is and how fast Netflix is promoting the next Squid Game thing.

Donkey Kong Bananza may not look like a particularly demanding game, especially compared to visually impressive contemporaries like Death Stranding 2. But the Switch 2 exclusive makes ample use of voxel environments that Donkey Kong can destroy while the player charts a path forward with Pauline in tow — think The Finals or Just Cause 2 by way of Super Mario Odyssey. No wonder, then, that Nintendo held off on releasing the platforming game until it had use of better technology.

In an interview with IGN, producer Kenta Motokura and director Kazuya Takahashi dove deep on the making of Donkey Kong Bananza, and the creatives revealed that the upcoming Switch 2 game didn’t actually start in development for that platform. Like Mario Kart World, production began during the days of the first Switch — but midway through, Nintendo realized it might be better off releasing the games with some extra juice.

The basic ideas were possible on Switch, Motokura says, but the best possible iteration of them would likely only be possible on Switch 2. Specifically, the studio wanted to hone in on the concept of “continuity of destruction,” which is what it says on the tin: When the player changes the environment, the game retains that information.

“So this allowed us to engage in creating really extremely rich variety of materials and very large scale changes in the environment on that new hardware,” Takahashi says. “And when destruction is your core gameplay, one really important moment that we wanted to preserve was when a player looks at a part of the terrain and thinks, can I break this? Because that creates a very important surprise that has a lot of impact for them and that was something that was best done on Switch 2.”

Takahashi does clarify that their interest in the console went beyond mere processing power; the game makes use of aspects like mouse controls to direct Pauline during co-op play, and it also comes up during Bananza’s art-sculpting voxel mode.

Still, between Donkey Kong Bananza and other marquee titles hitting in year one for Switch 2, it’s become obvious that the original Switch wasn’t just impacting the possibilities of third-party games on the platform. Nintendo itself has spent a long time being limited by the power of the Switch, which is wild to think about when you consider how successful the console has been regardless. At some point in the near future, the Switch might become the best-selling console of all time. It’s a testament to Nintendo’s design chops, and how gameplay can in fact trounce more surface-level details like graphics.

It also means that we haven’t seen Nintendo firing on all cylinders for most of a generation. What might the Japanese company make now that it has access to processing power and top-tier talent? Donkey Kong Bananza, which is out on July 17, will be but a taste of Nintendo 2.0.

It’s been clear since James Holden first stepped foot on the Rocinante: The Expanse would make for an incredible game. While the popular sci-fi series has previously been imagined as a game (a Telltale narrative, a tabletop RPG), developer Owlcat Games’ forthcoming The Expanse: Osiris Reborn seems like it’ll take it to a whole new level.

Planned for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X sometime in the near-ish future (it’s currently listed as “coming soon” on Steam), The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is a third-person action-RPG in the vein of Mass Effect. Like Telltale’s 2023 narrative-driven RPG, The Expanse: A Telltale Series, Osiris Reborn features some familiar faces from The Expanse TV show, but the two games have some major differences. Although Telltale definitely nailed the general vibe of The Expanse universe, the game’s scope was limited, and like every Telltale title, its combat mainly consisted of QTEs. But unlike Telltale’s take on The Expanse, Osiris Reborn will feature both tough narrative choices and legit, real-time combat — including spaceship battles, traditional gunplay, and fights in zero-g.

In short, this game looks like every Expanse’s fan’s dream.

For Osiris Reborn, Owlcat Games’ dev team seems to have really zeroed in on the ingredients needed to tell a good Expanse story. They’ve embraced comparisons to Mass Effect, and they’re not going easy on the franchise’s frequent dips into the realm of cosmic horror, either. In fact, Owlcat Games creative director Alexander Mishulin told Polygon that on at least one occasion, players will come face-to-face with what is arguably the creepiest entity in the Expanse universe: the Hybrid.

In The Expanse TV show, the Hybrid is a horrifying creature that terrorizes Martian marine Bobby Draper (Frankie Adams), killing her entire team and leaving her as the sole survivor. True Expanse lore-heads will know the Hybrid is the result of Project Caliban, an experiment run by an Earth-based company called Protogen, which specializes in private security, but also has a massive research wing. Protogen exposes its unwitting test subjects (mainly children and teens) to the protomolecule, a mysterious alien substance that seems to corrupt all that it touches. Most of Project Caliban’s subjects do not survive the process. The unfortunate few who do make it become Hybrids: 50% human, 50% protomolecule, 110% terrifying.

Once Osiris Reborn launches, Expanse fans will get to see a Hybrid for the first time since Season 3 of the TV show aired in 2018. In fact, it sounds like players may be facing more than one of them.

“We can confirm that you will be facing Project Caliban, which means Hybrids,” Mishulin told Polygon in a recent interview. “They will be in the game. You will be facing off with them. You’re starting [the game] on Eros, and that means this horrific [Project Caliban] experiment. This means being close to [the] protomolecule.”

The last time Expanse fans got a look at a Hybrid, it had made its way into the cargo bay of the Rocinante, a ship that doubles as both the home and the base of operations for the show’s main characters. Given the fact that Osiris Reborn takes place during the first two-and-a-half seasons of the TV show, the game’s devs have made a point of ensuring that the actions of the Rocinante’s crew will be directly felt by players. Some of the Roci’s crew members may also be making an appearance.

“You will be exploring your own story, but time and again you will be meeting consequences — not only of your actions, but of [Rocinante captain James] Holden’s actions as well,” Mishulin explained. “One of the antagonists you will be facing is Protogen, but you have a different fight, and alongside your journey, you will be meeting familiar faces.”

As for which Expanse TV show characters players will encounter in Osiris Reborn? Mishulin and the rest of the dev team are keeping their lips zipped for now.

“We are not telling who, we are not telling how, but we can confirm that some of the actors from the series will be making [an] appearance in our game,” Mishulin told Polygon.

Zero-g combat is another crucial aspect of adapting the Expanse into a video game. In both the books and the show, characters spend hours in low- or no-gravity environments, with some characters even having to take special drugs to withstand regular gravity since their bodies are so acclimated to a lack of it. Obviously, leaving out zero-g combat wasn’t an option. But implementing it hasn’t exactly been a spacewalk for the developers.

“We are still doing it right now,” Mishulin said of Owlcat’s ongoing quest to perfect the game’s zero-g experience. “Because it’s an additional layer to the combat, and we would want our players to feel — on one hand — feel the dangers of the space, and understand that space is a hostile environment. But on the other hand, we want them to feel how cool it is.”

Mishulin said the “rule of cool” did occasionally win out over strict adherence to hard sci-fi. For example, in reality, you cannot hear anything in the open vacuum of space. But in Osiris Reborn, gunshots fired in space are still audible to the player, because watching people shoot at each other in dead silence isn’t exactly a thrilling experience. When it comes to player perception, Mishulin told Polygon, “We want you to have a visceral combat experience.”

“We want it to be flashy,” he said of Osiris Reborn‘s combat. “So, for example, you will be hearing shots in a vacuum. Not because we don’t know [that you can’t hear things in space], but because we want you to experience that [flashiness].”

This is great news for Expanse fans who have been craving a game set in The Expanse universe that focuses heavily on both combat mechanics (including ship combat and zero-g combat) and a compelling narrative in which player choices matter and the surrounding universe feels believably embroiled in its own political and humanitarian conflicts.

Despite its futuristic tech and far-flung setting, The Expanse is ultimately about telling very human stories, especially stories that revolve around the often-difficult choices its characters are forced to make (sometimes in the heat of battle).

Although Polygon hasn’t yet had a chance to try out the game, it’s clear that Osiris Reborn‘s developers are aiming to please The Expanse’s massive community of fans, who are aching to explore a universe of heart-pounding combat, interstellar romance, tough decision-making, Machievellian political intrigue — and, of course, creepy protomolecule monsters.

I’ve logged an unholy number of hours into NetEase’s hero-based shooter, Marvel Rivals, and to its credit, this time sink has largely been fueled by the strength of the gameplay. I’ve bought a couple of skins and unlocked a few things here and there, but for the most part, cosmetics for the characters I play — and by extension, the battle passes that have been available so far — have been underwhelming. The gothic season was outright ugly. But season 3? It’s looking sick.

It helps that the new season is themed around Knull, the creator of symbiotes. Knull is an eldritch supervillain, but more importantly, his color scheme is largely composed of black, white, and red. Accordingly, new skins in the upcoming battle pass all kinda look like Venom, and it’s a design that works for pretty much everyone. Jeff looks good. Squirrel Girl looks good. Rocket Racoon looks good. I hate to say it, but even Spider-Man is rocking the new threads. Beyond Knull, many of the new cosmetics revolve around Phoenix, so there’s a lot of fiery costumes in the battle pass as well; these are more hit and miss.

Another key inclusion in the upcoming season is the addition of plushies that add a whiff of Labubu to the superhero game. You can walk around with lil’ kawaii versions of Mary Jane and Groot, among other choices. I want them all. Truly, more games should let the girlies run around with handbags.

💥 New Accessories System lands in Season 3!Unlock adorable hero-themed accessories like the Deadpool Plush, Jeff Handbag, and more!Earn Accessory Points by playing Quick Match or Competitive, then trade them in for hero-exclusive flair. 🎯🗓️ Available starting July 11… pic.twitter.com/mjrVWt480Z

The next content drop will also add a couple of cute new hashmoji for Phoenix and Blade, so you can crash out at your teammates in style.

Season 3 of Marvel Rivals arrives on July 11. It’ll bring a new map, a new event that’ll net you Storm’s best skin yet, and a cool new “student perks” system that grants verified scholars trial access to 10 costumes. Not me about to redownload the game most likely to give me high blood pressure at an early age.

After a year of negotiations, the SAG-AFTRA video game voice actors’ strike has officially come to an end, with members of the guild approving the 2025 Interactive Media Agreement.

The strike — which had been ongoing since July 2024 — was halted last month when SAG-AFTRA union members and the game companies represented by the Interactive Media Agreement (IMA) Negotiating Committee reached a tentative agreement. This led to the strike itself ending, but SAG-AFTRA members hadn’t yet ratified the agreement. Now, a year after SAG-AFTRA voice actors went on strike, the 2025 Interactive Media Agreement has been approved by the guild, with 95.04% of SAG-AFTRA members voting in favor of the updated agreement, and 4.96% voting against it.

“Together we have achieved far more than many thought possible and have made important headway in our ongoing efforts to expand video game performers’ rights and ensure sustainable careers for those dedicated to this vibrant artform,” the union said in a press release. “We express our deepest appreciation to the dedicated negotiating committee made up of your fellow performers, working in partnership with our expert negotiating staff and lead negotiator Ray Rodriguez.”

With the contract now ratified, video game performers (including voice actors) will immediately begin receiving a 15.17% increase in compensation for their work, and that compensation will be increased by an additional 3% each November from 2025 to 2027. Health and retirement benefits have also been boosted, with the AFTRA Retirement Fund increasing by 0.5% now, with another 0.5% increase going into effect this October.

But arguably the biggest win for the guild in this new agreement — and one of the main reasons voice actors were striking in the first place — is the implementation of AI protections for performers working in the games industry. SAG-AFTRA says that the updated contract “establishes foundational guardrails around AI, including informed consent requirements across various AI uses and the ability for performers to suspend informed consent for digital replica use during a strike.”

“Now that the agreement is ratified, video game performers will be able to enjoy meaningful gains and important A.I. protections, which we will continue to build on as uses of this technology settle and evolve,” SAG-AFTRA national executive director and chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland said.

The video game companies represented by the IMA Negotiating Committee also released a statement via the organization’s spokesperson, Audrey Cooing.“We are pleased that SAG-AFTRA members have ratified a new Interactive Media Agreement, which delivers historic wage increases, industry-leading A.I. protections, and enhanced health and safety measures for performers,” Cooling said. “We look forward to building on our industry’s decades-long partnership with the union and continuing to create groundbreaking entertainment experiences for billions of players worldwide.”

The video game studios and publishers represented by the IMA Negotiating Committee include Activision Productions Inc., Blindlight LLC, Disney Character Voices Inc., Electronic Arts Productions Inc., Epic Games Inc., Formosa Interactive LLC, Insomniac Games Inc., Take 2 Productions Inc., and WB Games Inc.

A closeup of a person playing the ModRetro Chromatic handheld while riding public transit.

ModRetro is also introducing a new color option called cloud. | Image: ModRetro

After selling out all of its limited stock of First Edition handhelds last year, ModRetro has announced that its Chromatic Game Boy is now permanently back in stock. The company is also introducing a new white-and-purple cloud color option, new game cartridges, and a collection of accessories that includes a rechargeable battery.

The Chromatic is now once again available for purchase through ModRetro’s online store in seven different colors: cloud, midnight, wave, inferno, bubblegum, volt, and leaf. Functionality is exactly the same as the First Edition versions of the Chromatic, and the handheld is still made with a durable magnesium alloy case and a pixel-perfect IPS screen that’s color-matched to the original Game Boy’s and Game Boy Color’s displays.

Seven ModRetro Chromatic handhelds all lined up in a row in different color options.

Pricing now starts at $199.99 and includes a modernized copy of Tetris that adds new gameplay features, but that’s for a version of the Chromatic featuring a screen protected by Gorilla Glass. The original First Edition version of the Chromatic featured more durable sapphire glass, and if you want that same level of screen protection it will now cost you $299.99.

Two Chromatic handhelds connected by a link cable next to a Chromatic that’s flipped over with a rechargeable battery pack inserted.

The Chromatic can still be powered by three AA batteries that, based on our testing, provide around seven or eight hours of gameplay with the handheld’s screen brightness reduced to 50 percent. If you don’t want to provide your own rechargeable AAs, ModRetro is also introducing a $29.99 rechargeable battery pack offering up to 16 hours of gameplay. Other new accessories include a $14.99 link cable for connecting two Chromatic handhelds for multiplayer, and a $14.99 Mod Kit letting you customize your Chromatic with swappable parts.

ModRetro is also expanding its games collection today with five new cartridges featuring titles like Sabrina: The Animated Series – Zapped!, Wicked Plague, and a puzzle platformer called Gravitorque where you manipulate gravity instead of jumping (you can try it in your browser here).

When the Chromatic originally debuted, the handheld’s creator, Palmer Luckey, told The Verge’s Sean Hollister that quantities would be limited and he wasn’t sure if he’d make more than what was needed to fulfill preorders. Today’s announcement is welcome news both for those who missed out on getting a Chromatic during its initial run last year and those who did get one, because this will help grow the Chromatic community and potentially encourage other companies to make new games and accessories for the handheld.

What hasn’t changed is that the Chromatic is still tied to a controversial figure. Although the Chromatic reflects Luckey’s past as a Game Boy modder before he created the Oculus Rift VR headset, he was an early Donald Trump supporter, and after selling Oculus to Facebook he was fired following controversial political donations. Luckey went on to found Anduril, a defense contractor that makes military tech, including lethal weaponized drones.

The Chromatic may be one of the best ways to play classic Game Boy and Game Boy Color games, but if you feel that your enjoyment of retro gaming could be hampered by the handheld’s associations, the Analogue Pocket offers comparable performance and cartridge support without any controversy.

OpenAI is planning to launch an AI web browser in the “coming weeks,” according to a report from Reuters. Sources tell the outlet that OpenAI could build its Operator AI agent into the browser, allowing it to book reservations, fill out forms, and complete other tasks on a user’s behalf as it moves toward an “agentic” future.

As noted by Reuters, the browser will feature a “native” ChatGPT interface, potentially allowing users to interact with the chatbot directly through the browser rather than navigating to OpenAI’s website. OpenAI also reportedly plans to power its browser with Google’s open-source engine, Chromium, which is used by major browsers like Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Opera.

This week, the AI startup Perplexity also launched a Chromium-based web browser, called Comet, for its $200 per month subscribers. The browser uses Perplexity’s AI search engine by default and comes with a built-in AI assistant. OpenAI’s upcoming browser could pose yet another threat to Google, which could be forced to sell Chrome as part of a federal antitrust ruling. Both Perplexity and OpenAI have said they would consider buying the browser.

This isn’t the first time we’re hearing about a potential browser from OpenAI. Last year, The Information reported that OpenAI had been exploring the possibility of launching a browser, and even hired two people who were “instrumental” in launching Google Chrome. OpenAI began weaving its search engine within ChatGPT last year, and building this capability into its browser seems like a logical expansion.
