Used to pirate apps all the time but I started getting into Linux and learn more about privacy. Now i just look for foss alternatives and have stopped pirating apps altogether.

I've been using x265 exclusively for all my media needs, except on the rare occasions where only x264 was available.

It was easier to make working apps but it might be more difficult to properly follow good coding practices if you don't have prior experience. That's just my experience.
