cries in Canberran

Hadn't heard it before no, but it's not my favourite of covers I've heard. The original song itself is very nostalgic for me with childhood memory attached so I love it as is. Only as an adult did I find any real meaning in the lyrics though. Can easily be palmed off as a shallow pop song I guess, but it has depth to me.

"I'm just tired and bored with myself. Hey there, baby, I could use just a little help".

Holy shit they're barely even trying

I bought a padded, fabric covered Chesterfield style one on eBay for about $100 AUD. It's comfortable to sit up against and drink my coffee in the morning. I like the aesthetic but it's definitely also a comfort thing. Cold hard wall or pillows falling down the back doesn't sound appealing.

I walk my dog plenty around bush reserves where there are large mobs of roos. My dog is off lead but trained not to chase them. There's a slim chance a buck will have a go at us unprovoked, but largely it comes down to minding your own business and you'll be fine.

These stories always start with dogs chasing roos, and the big bucks do what they do best. Luring them into water where they have the advantage (they can stand on their tails), putting them in a headlock and drowning them. It's pure self defence.

I love my dog to pieces and that's why I trained him not to bother roos. It's really not that hard.

Try the Thomas Covenant Chronicles. They taper off in quality over the series but the first three, particularly the first, are incredible. Quick premise: man diagnosed with leprosy, hates the world, hates himself. Transported to fantasy land. Does very bad thing within minutes of being there. Has consequences that scar generations and shape the world. A true anti hero.

I'm not a fantasy fan really, but these are an exception.

I'm in the ACT. I can look at most of neighbours without rage. Most. Not enough.

Start here: https://peo.gov.au/ for basic explanations in how things work here.

Also try last year's Vote Compass: https://votecompass.abc.net.au/ That will help you map your values to how they align with the political parties - or at least what the parties say they'll do

When it's time to vote, go to the actual websites of the parties and read about their policies. Don't rely just on their names as they can be misleading. Do the vote compass every year and that will help you organise your thoughts on the parties.

You don't necessarily need to read the news to form an opinion on parties, but do pay attention to fact checkers and the like, for example: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-10-13/fact-check-jacinta-nampijinpa-price-closing-the-gap-place-race/102966826?utm_source=abc_news_app&utm_medium=content_shared&utm_campaign=abc_news_app&utm_content=other. Pay attention to who lies and their motivations to spread misinformation.

Australia

My life is pretty great all things considered. But in about an hour I'm walking down to the local primary school to cast my 'yes' vote for the referendum.

Info here: https://www.yes23.com.au/

The 'no' vote is tipped to win.

So, later this evening I'll get confirmation that nothing has changed in my country. We're still a backwards, racist society who doesn't give a fuck about our indigenous population.

For me, as an indigenous person who is also upper middle class and in one of the most affluent cities in the country, life is pretty good. But the same can't be said for many others who don't share my privilege. And my country is about to tell them, loud and clear, that they don't care. Didn't care 40 years ago, don't care now.

Yeah I was in highschool (Aus) and we bought the idea that it was real found footage and a real legend, hook, line and sinker. Excellent marketing.

It got a fair bit of criticism but that movie has had a lot of replay in my house. Solid and simple premise, moves quickly. I could do with a little less of the love story but it does make the ending hit a bit harder.
