Just thousands of regular people manually downloading the WhatsApp client for iOS

Not trying to discourage people from doing this, but they likely have caches or rely on CDN's that wouldn't really show any impact of any kind. Even if they do, a single day of being "down" is not doing much. For it to be effective people would need to continue this for weeks, and I don't see anyone caring enough to do that— they're not even willing to ditch facebook/twitter/whatsapp, we think they're going to maintain a DDoS attack?

Same issue with uploading encrypted backups to Amazon Drive/Google Drive/OneDrive, etc; there's already built-in limits that protect them, and at the end of the day you're just using what you already paid for. If you fill up your storage you have to pay them more to use it. Not a good strategy IMHO. The only real way to hit their wallet is to leave their ecosystem.

The no internet doesn't make sense to me. We've already paid for the bandwidth, we'd just not be using it? May be better to advise people to switch to Firefox and install uBlock origin or ditch Whatsapp to hit Meta/Facebook where it really hurts. But I guess that's not as easy to communicate.

if a society extends tolerance to those who are intolerant, it risks enabling the eventual dominance of intolerance; thereby undermining the very principle of tolerance

The world would be better off if everyone with racist views disappeared today. Let's not defend those who would not hesitate to oppress us.

They do, but just like anything dealing with security or privacy, there are degrees of inconvenience and "breaking" that are not suited for every situation.

Firefox is a good default, but if you want more privacy, LibreWolf is an option. LibreWolf configures more settings by default to protect your privacy— but these come at a cost. The cost being that more websites are likely to break and/or need "fixing". Look at the list of features that LibreWolf may break here [0]. This is not a browser for your general family or someone who just wants things to "work".

Interestingly, LibreWolf disable Google Safe Browsing, which they actually recommend you enable as Firefox has implemented it in a privacy preserving way. The devs disable it by default in LibrewWolf for a semi-technical reason [1]. Without Google Safe Browsing you will not get warned about dangerous sites known for phishing, malware, or unwanted software. Technically inclined people may not want this, but I would never disable this feature for friends/family as that would put them at risk.

Lastly, if your friends/family ran into website that doesn't work, they will not be troubleshooting the problem or trying to find a workaround. They will uninstall the browser and go running back to Chrome- this is the fine line that Firefox needs to navigate to ensure they protect user privacy, but don't inconvenience those who don't have the technical chops or patience.

Right? If anything I think the web is having its renaissance moment with distributed/federated platforms like piefed, lemmy, kbin/mbin, bookwyrm, peertube, mastodon, pixelfed, misskey, matrix, XMPP, Deltachat, nostr, etc.

The only real answer - same as with any other software/code.

Devil's advocate:

Mozilla needs a fat paycheck or the whole show stops, we all lose and are forced to use a chrome-based browser. Firefox is the only real alternative and thanks to their work we have, in no particular order:

That doesn't mean Mozilla hasn't made bad decisions, they absolutely have. But to claim they should stop receiving nearly half a billion dollars every year from their competitor makes zero sense, especially considering developing a web browser is about as difficult as it gets. You'd be destroying the only alternative and helping Google mop the floor with the pieces that remain.
