Yeah this feels like people with terrible habits being forced to learn new ones
If more people learn to get their info from reliable sources, that's a win imo

Tbf, "learned a language" is a hard thing to pin down in any case.
I've been building enterprise software with python for almost a decade now. I still occasionally find stuff in the stdlibs that I didn't know about, or even sometimes some subtle feature of the language that I never had reason to explore until now.
If someone asks me if I "learned" python, id say hell yeah - but there's always still plenty to learn
That being said, no reasonable definition of learned includes what you could do in 2 days, even as an experienced dev lol
Looking at your account, you're on a instance that is defederated with the worst offenders
Make a lemmy.ml account and pop into any thread that talks about Ukraine and you won't be confused anymore lol
Personally, I don't mind one bit that they're communist, but their trollish behavior and their tendency to act like China and Russia (and I've even seen a few for North Korea) are bastions of individual liberty, prosperity, and justice with no faults makes them exactly as annoying as the super nationalist western folks who act the same about the US or Europe (depending usually purely on where they're from).
Basically it's not a communist problem, it's a troll problem where the trolls all happen to be communist
Tbf, a threat of violence is only one way to read his response (I know nothing about this Paul dude and his personality, so maybe it was 100% a threat idk).
I could also see his comment as meaning "just because you're behind a computer screen doesn't mean you should feel able to say shit that you'd never say to a person's face", because let's be honest, that's a reminder a lot of folks on the internet could use, regardless of who could kick whose ass
We don't know what non Americans think (by definition), but you can't just immediately count them as "not republican".
Anecdotally, my parents are republican, think Trump is better than Biden, and that the charges against him are all fake - they also can't be bothered to vote, and told me the other week that they haven't voted in years, because they live in CA. and don't think their red vote will count for anything in such a blue state.
I obviously didn't try very hard to dissuade them from continuing that habit, but my point is that there are absolutely people who support Trump despite his criminal charges who dont vote or respond to polls
I think you're entirely misunderstanding my meaning and sentiment, given that I don't disagree with anything in your comment
It's the only rational explanation for lemmygrad and similar instances.
Idk, I explain that one away simply with the fact that stupidity and a desire to troll don't strictly follow party lines. Nothings stopping a communist (or someone dumb enough to think being pro russia/China is the same thing) from having the mental maturity of your average the_donald poster
I'll really never understand why so many people reserve so much hate specifically for AOC. Is she perfect? Is she immune from the hypocrisy you find in literally every elected official today? Hell no. She's definitely guilty of having said one thing than voted the other way and similar, as is every other politician out there.
But on the relative scale of U.S. Politicians, she's one of the few who is at least making the right noises about change, and while she doesn't always get things done, she definitely seems to be moving in a better direction than most other politicians.
And yet people single her out all the time for their hatred. Between her and the hate surrounding Greta (which is also weirdly prevalent on Lemmy), it's hard to see it as anything more than just hating young women who speak up, and wind up being wildly successful at doing so
so roughly half of all Americans?
Again, this isn't some fringe thing, these are choices being made by roughly half the voting population in the US. Sure - a lot won't use as much idolizing language as the folks in the OP, but they're still planning to vote for Trump, despite everything that's been uncovered so far, and everything more that gets uncovered every day.
Most would agree with your point - right up until you suggest that having an "uncorrupt government" is remotely possible.
Pretty much the same level of unrealistic idealism as folks who think it's remotely possible to transition a state to communism without it turning into authoritarianism.
There, now I've pissed off everyone lol
Edit: Except, I guess for the hardcore capitalists, but I assume those guys are all too dumb to read, so no point, really 🤷
It's not just that, classified government work is a huge PITA to get cleared for in a lot of ways. It's like the worst, longest, and most privacy killing job interview you ever had, except the dudes doing the interview have the ability to send you to jail if they find anything they don't like (not that it happens for silly stuff like pot, but it does add to the stress)
And then when you final make it through, you get the priveledge of working twice as hard for half the pay that a skilled professional could make elsewhere.
The only time I'd consider government work is when I'm late enough in my career that the prospect of a pension is more appealing than a high immediate salary
Recoil would be a removed though lol
