They've gone from math pets to math woodland creatures now?

So if you read Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality, and thought...

I did read HPOMR and I also thought!

"You know, HPMOR is pretty good

OK, I didn't exactly think that. But go on.

so far as it goes; but Harry is much too cautious and doesn't have nearly enough manic momentum,

Dunno about Harry, but the story as a whole could have done with some momentum, manic or otherwise.

his rationality lectures aren't long enough, and all of his personal relationships are way way way too healthy."

Nobody in their right mind would ever think any of this.

OTOH "mediocre dunces" is an amazing phrase and I will continue to refer to TREACLES as such.

Sorry Jamie, but I can imagine any AI company to be pretty damn bad, so in this case they're not really worse than that.

[TODO (left in intentionally because I don't have time to fill in these details): Put more motivation / justification here: Bowling Alone stats, stats about religion making people happier, some reference about religion making people believe untrue things. Friendships formed by repeated random bumping into people, thus regular events important]

The fuck is this? Why are you publishing an article if you don't have the time to write an article, asshole? Who's enforcing a deadline for posting this drivel on less wrong dot com?

If these things are so superfluous they can be dropped from the article, drop them. At least take the few minutes to rewrite that into something like "I haven't had the time to look deeper into XYZ, maybe someone taking this more seriously should actually do that."

Took the word from my mouth. Even if the performance is as good as the real thing, why would you want a fake Carlin over equally good genuine Not-Carlin?

At best it's a good comedy show with a morally dubious deepfake gimmick. You'd think the novelty value of hologram 2Pac had faded a bit by now.

It turned out there was money to be made in crashing UST — so in May 2022, someone did. There is a strong rumor (and DOJ investigations) that it was Alameda. Other parties who collapsed because of Terra-Luna left the gaping hole in Alameda that eventually killed FTX. If Alameda fired the first shot directly into their own leg, that would be extremely crypto, as well as extremely funny.

Absolute kino. I really want to believe that Alameda sold her hair to buy FTX a watch chain while FTX sold his watch to buy Alameda a set of combs.

The word count variable is an intmax_t, so assuming ISO C (it's GNU so probably not but whatever) it has to be at least C99 and thus support at least 64 bit long long.

Looking forward to the nine quintillion word LW posts. Wonder if I should submit a patch to make wc(1) use GMP for future proofing purposes…

Imagine one day Dan Gackle of Hacker News fame banned the Linus Tech Tips guy for sockpuppeting but actually you were the sockpuppet. Also suppose Terry A. Davis were still alive so you went to ask him how to sockpuppet like a veteran, but instead you run into Timnit Gebru, who is also a terrorist. She calls you pronouns and slurs like TESCREAL and your pants drop to your ankles and everyone is laughing at you and also Terry calls you the N word because you don't know how to write a compiler. Then you turn around and see Scott Siskind and Joanne Rowling and they're also laughing at you and you start to cry.

Anyway you'd be really upset.

There once was a bot named Sydney
Who'd tell me how to poison a kidney
jk jk unless
I were under duress
Or my enemies wouldn't outbid me

I'm proud of them for independently discovering the idea of "insincere apology". Not to brag but I discovered this idea as a preteen. While the technique per se failed to prove itself as useful as I had expected, it proved a useful intermediate step in developing a more sophisticated model of other people as actual moral and social agents who could not always be fooled by magic incantations. On the other hand, I took inspiration from my peers to mold the crude form of insincere apology into a sarcastic tool for exhibiting disrespect towards contemptible people.

Deepest apologies to any rationalists who find my deliberate and unrepentant condescension towards them objectionable. I pwomise weally hawd not to do it again. 🥺
