Bikes shouldn't have to pay road tax because they don't cause wear on the roads, and the roads aren't built for them. Road tax doesn't come close to covering the cost of roads, the rest comes from general tax, so in reality it's bikes subsidizing cars.

Bikes aren't riding in the middle of the lane just for the sake of it, there's nothing worse than having a car riding up your ass. They're riding in the middle of the lane because of visibility and to prevent unsafe passing. Once it's safe to pass, they will pull over and let you pass. They aren't "obstructing traffic" by riding along as fast, safe and courteously as they can, even if why they're doing it isn't always obvious to you.

Paracetamol is not considered an anti-inflammatory.

You shouldn't have to lane shift in roundabouts. On a well designed multi lane roundabout you choose your lane before you get there and simply follow it to the exit. The only reason to change lanes is if you screwed up.

The example I'm thinking of is New Zealand, where there's endless studies into causes of erosion most of which mention the introduction of grazing game animals(e.g. deer) as a contributing factor.

deforestation and overgrazing by livestock and introduced game animal

introduction of exotic plants and animals (e.g. rabbits, deer) resulted in obvious signs of land depletion and erosion

By the 1930’s the deer population in New Zealand was out of control and causing serious environmental damage through grazing, severe soil erosion and slips from the thousands of hooves ripping up the ground

It's very much proven in some ecosystems where humans introduced new animals, which ate all the plants and caused tons of new erosion.

[–] biddy@feddit.nl 2 points 2 years ago

Because humans are powerful enough that we are a bit like gods, and we have to make these choices between which lives we keep and which lives we kill.

Is it ethical to allow the hunting of African game if that money funds the conservation of many more animals? We have to make that trade off. Ethics are subjective, and I'm firmly on the side of allowing hunting as are many other people.

In New Zealand, as with other isolated islands, there's a unique population of indigenous birds that are now being massacred by introduced mammals. Is it ethical to hunt and trap and poison the introduced pests to save the indigenous birds. We have to make that choice.

A runaway trolley is going to kill 5 humans unless you switch it to another track where it will only kill 1 human. Is that ethical?

A politician could choose to lower the speed limit of a road to 10 km/h, saving lives but costing the economy, quality of life, and future election wins. Is that ethical?

Ethics are subjective, but we have to choose.

Whatever it is, it will be more accurate that Sport Utility Vehicle for which it fails at all 3.

You're absolutely right, but this argument about a "tax on the poor" is used to justify everything that's wrong with cars. We need to solve this properly with a social safety net and alternatives to cars.

Surely there's going to be someone from down the list that would do it. There's so many politicians that work so hard for a spot in Parliament even when there's no hope of winning.

In this case it likely wouldn't be a problem, Andrew Bayly will be elected as a list MP, then he could seamlessly switch to electorate MP if he wins the by-election.

  1. It's possible that this election we will get the youngest MP since 1853 with Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke, age 20.

Reallocate list MPs after a change in electorate MPs?

Yes, this makes way more sense. The current system means that parliament won't be proportional to the party vote, defeating the entire point of MMP.

Not so much with ebikes, although I understand that those are also hobbled by speed restrictions. It seems ironic that the country of unlimited speed limits for cars has such slow speed limits for safe transport, but I guess that's what carbrained thinking does
