When I was young, I did site networking at a large campus for a major tech company. One day, we were working in the warehouse area and saw pallets of brand new, state of the art, 4.7GB hard drives being unloaded. Being the nerds we were, my coworkers and I stood around staring wide-eyed at the loot we beheld before us. These weren't yet available for purchasing by the public, and we were in awe! They seemed almost magical.

For the next couple of days, the topic of HDD space was prevalent in our discussions. "That's almost limitless space!" "You could spend the next several years downloading and never fill that up!" When I finally got my hands on one of them, I was in nerd heaven. I thought I'd never need more space in my life.

Fast forward to today: I can download more than 4.7GB in a few minutes and I'm sitting on 150TB+ of HDDs. Technology advancement is crazy.

Hey y’all, I need your help!

I've posted this around in a few camera/photo subs as well as DHExchange but I figured I'd throw it here too to try and get as many eyes on it as possible since it's time sensitive, hope that's alright, otherwise I'm happy to delete this! Sorry for the wording in this post, I wrote it mostly for the target of camera/photo subs to understand easier.

For the past ~two years I’ve been working on a project to archive and preserve the Sony Play Memories Camera Apps for older cameras so they don’t get lost forever. In 2023 they ended new sales of paid apps, and on August 31st of 2025 they will end support for downloading free apps, AND downloading any previously purchased apps.

I’m so close to completing the archive, but time is running out and I need your help!

If you own any of the following apps on your Sony cameras, please see this postfor instructions to archive them, and reach out to me to share them with the archive or if you need help with the process!

| Sony A7x/RX100x/RX10x | Sony A6x00/A5x00/NEX-5T/R/NEX-6 | |

|

| | Light Shaft | Angle Shift Add-on | | Multiple Exposure | Light Trail (A5100) | | Portrait Lightning | Liveview Grading | | Stop Motion+ | Motion Shot | | | Portrait Lighting | | | Sound Photo | | | Stop Motion+ | | | Cinematic Photo (NEX) |

Many have probably heard that ultrapopular EU shop Mindfactory has gone through bankrupcy. \

In the end, Geizhals owners /Heise/ have picked up the pieces and despite some concerns about possible conflicts of interests with Geizhals as main EU price search engine, it seems that they are already implementing some great ideas.\

For one, they have added mighty interesting recertified HDD drive options at very competitive pricing to their Snappschop. \

Recertified 26TB Seagate for €349 - not bad. Especially when competing with many thousands of anonymous shops on Amazon or Ebay and their warranties.

For years the Samsung 870 QVO 8TB has been the workhorse of my file servers. They're the perfect blend of size and speed (I couldn't care less about extended write performance) and during the pandemic they retailed for as low as $350. With a large SAS controller I can easily plug 32 into a server.

I recently went shopping for spares and discovered Samsung has discontinued the QVO line. I poked around and it seems nobody else makes an 8TB SATA SSD either, just NVMe drives. That's fine for a typical PC but if a RAID drive fails I need to swap in a replacement and I can't exactly plug an NVMe drive into a SATA port. This leaves me feeling a bit vulnerable.

Is there anyone out there who makes an 8TB SATA SSD?

  • or -

Is there any way to connect an NVMe drive to a SATA port?

WD/SanDisk deny refund upon return of unopened 4TB SN850X NVMe drive : r/pcmasterrace

Update July 15:

I submitted my case to my credit card company back in March (like various people recommended in the comments on my original post). The credit card company reviewed my dispute claim and fairly quickly gave me a refund.

However, the credit card company did say that the merchant (SanDisk) could still provide evidence to support their denial of the refund. I knew at that point that they would, because I had seen this happen to other people in other circumstances. In most cases, the merchant has the upper hand and the last word.

So lo and behold, my credit card company did get evidence from SanDisk and quickly sided with SanDisk and charged me back. This happened in April and I just found out today as I was reconciling my account. I should have done so sooner, but I honestly thought it would take longer to get charged again.

This is what the message from the credit card company said:

Business Name: WWW.SANDISK.COM

Transaction Amount: $510.49

Transaction Date: February 28, 2025

We've rebilled the charge you disputed with WWW.SANDISK.COM.

Here's what happened: We reached out to the business about the $510.49 charge you disputed. After reviewing their explanation, we've determined that you're responsible for the amount in question.

We contacted the merchant regarding your inquiry and the merchant has provided us with the documentation which have been enclosed for your review. Please be advised we have removed the information not pertaining to the case from the supports. The merchant has provided us with explanation which states that upon inspection, one of the drives had the labels missing and as per the return policy, if a returned product is suspected of being fraudulent or counterfeit, SanDisk can refuse and confiscate the product. Since the label is missing, they are unable to verify if the product sent back is the correct one and not a counterfeit.

Here's what to expect: We've rebilled this charge to your account, and you'll see it reflected on your next billing statement. We've also attached further documentation, so you'll have all the details. If you have any new information that may change the outcome of this dispute, please contact us within 30 days.

This is the pages on the PDF in the credit card company's message to me. This is what SanDisk provided to the credit card company:

The sent a lower quality image (perhaps due to the conversion to PDF) of the bogus photos they had sent me.

SanDisk can commit fraud and get away with it.
