Dear Swarm Intelligence

I am going to buy a second backup hard drive. I already have one, which I use to back up my data from the NAS. Since I will then have two, I will use them alternately so that I always have one hard drive in a safe place. I have chosen the following (I need 20 TB):

Western Digital WD200EDGZ 20TB 7.2K RPM SATA 6Gb/s 512e 3.5in Recertified Hard Drive

What do you think about the risk and durability?

Hi all

Because of the current political climate, I am very concerned about scientifically based information being erased from the American internet. I would like to download and save reports from the government agencies that interest me. For example, I am very interested in climate change. I just searched for the EPA's climate change site, and it has been taken down. Does anyone know of an archive of scientifically based information that is free to the public? For starters, I am interested particular topics within in the EPA, the DoE, and the Access Board.

Thank you

I have a lot of youtube duplicates, they have the video ID in the filename. I downloaded in various resolutions, re-downloaded in higher resolutions as I had more space available.

I don't need those special features that compare contents of videos, only needs to match the filename I think the 11 character video ID and I'll sort by filename and delete.

I thought ssds trim and hdds defrag.

I stumbled across two wd external hdds (probably smr) that have trim support and are indeed trimmed.

It doesn’t make sense to me, what am I missing?

I have 2 seagate drives that are Out of Warranty and were marked as bad/failed in ZFS. what can I do to test and mark the bad blocks on these disks so that I can add these drives back to my ZFS pool?

I have a 1024 GB SSD. It's my primary hard drive. It contains all my work files, all my software, all my everything. I cannot risk this drive under any circumstances.

I amazon'd a second drive to use as a backup. It's unfortunately slightly smaller. I didn't realize that when I selected it.

My main drive is not full or anything. The second drive has more than enough space to contain all of the actual data on my main SSD. I want to create a complete clone of my C drive on this new drive. In theory the new drive would have less empty space on it but everything else would be intact.

What is the most straightforward and reliable way to clone my SSD to this smaller SSD? I have tried numerous methods including AOMEI backupper, Macrium Reflect, Clonezilla, and so far I have been rewarded with BSODs, "firmware panics", error messages, and a full day of being unable to boot my PC.

What can I do? Is there a safe way to do this? Many thanks in advance

I've bought a WD Passport 5Tb as an additional external back-up source. I've started coping files with rsync and after about 300Gb, getting too hot (lots of small files), the drive kept disconnecting. Now it's working on usb 2.0 and when it cooled down also on 3.0.

However, I've decided to send it back for a refund and get a standard 3.5" HDD and use it via a dock. I want to make sure that whatever I copied so far is not recoverable so I am cleaning up the files via Bitdefender File Shredder. It takes however quite a long time, since there were around 2mil files in 300Gb. Is there a better, safer, faster way of making sure data is not recoverable from a drive?

Hi, I hope this is okay to ask. I'm an American with no experience in archiving, but I've been saving links to posts and videos on Facebook and Instagram that I would like to preserve. My first thought would be to download the contents and put it on some kind of usb or disk but after theyre off the platform I'm not sure how to properly preserve these posts/videos offline or online. So I have two questions.

  1. What would be the best way for me to get the posts or videos off if Facebook and Instagram into a viewable format.
  2. Once I have transferred the content, how do I best store it physically and digitally. Are there digital libraries for this sort of thing? I only have a laptop and I would like storage I can transport easily if I choose to travel (plane).
