This is exactly what I have been doing. I enjoy this way of interacting with Fedi.

Pros:

  • No reliance on the charity of others.
  • Refresh as many times as you want without worrying about server load.
  • Decide exactly which apps to host, and how they look and feel.

Cons:

  • Hosting costs money/time.
  • Interacting with remote instances is sometimes a little more work as you have to copy URLs and paste them in your search, and you're less likely to have already fetched content because of other users subscribing to these remote instances.

Generally interacting with other instances works just fine. Especially on Mastodon I hardly ever notice I'm on a single user instance. Lemmy because of its different style of application (e.g. it's more common to link to posts) presents empty posts a bit more often but I hope a bit more proactive fetching of remote content can be added at some point.

Hosting your own instances may not be for everyone but it is for me, and I can recommend it.

Well I hope !gaming@beehaw.org will be a good source of community-made gaming news going forward!

Well sharing it was always going to be a bit interesting since it was Rowan Atkinson, but I also believed what I've read previously about EVs being disappointingly "un-green" vehicles when battery manufacturing was taken into account. So yeah I thought it was a reasonable argument. I'm happy to have been corrected.

Good points. I agree. Rowan seems to be far off here.

I wonder when we'll learn, looking back, what the longevity of EVs is in practice. I don't have data but I expect to be the same or even better than ICEs. There's just so much more which can break in an ICE car, and which owners might choose not to fix.

Playing Outer Wilds (+DLC) was an experience I will forever remember.

His main point was comparing how a good ICE car could last "30 years" while a battery-powered car might be limited to "10 years" while also being more environmentally taxing to build. That's object longevity not ownership.

Now I don't necessarily agree that this is really how it works out, as ICE cars need excellent maintenance to last this long and EV cars might have fewer points of failure but I feel this argument has some merit.

Agreed! Public transportation and cycling+walking infrastructure is more effective and more durable than just building a better car.

I suggest taking a look at Hetzner for hosting, I have found them very reliable and affordable. And perhaps reach out to admins of some of the larger Mastodon instances for hosting advice.

Tears of the Kingdom has also sucked me in. It's not quite a 10/10 for me, and in some ways I think looking back I slightly prefer the more austere and "pure" BotW, but the new temples, abilities and shrines are really fun. Great game.

Revisiting the Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance campaign reliably keeps me entertained for a few days.

Same with Settlers 2: 10th Anniversary edition.

I have set up my Mastodon and Lemmy instances on my VPS using YunoHost.

On the plus side, it makes setting up server software ridiculously easy. It took me about an hour with each app.

The downside is the packages are community-supported, and often run a version or two behind the official release. For example I'm still on Lemmy 0.16.7. Still, I think it's a great option if you want a more hands-off experience.

Huh. Charging for me is the best thing about an EV. I can overnight add 300 miles of range to my car without leaving the house. And that’s not some fancy exotic solution, all I needed was a 220V breaker and the right outlet. Yes, if you have a low range car like an i3 you’re gonna have a bad time, but for any modern car with a decent battery and high voltage infrastructure charging either at home or on the go really isn’t a problem.
