It was definitely better: We had real dishes, forks, spoons and knives made of metal, bigger seats, real food. You had not to pay extra for every breath you take.

Ich habe 4xWD Red mit 4TB verbaut (noch die alten CMR Varianten). Die ältesten zwei haben jetzt ~74000 Betriebsstunden auf der Uhr und laufen immer noch Problemlos. Ich hatte noch 4x4TB HGST Platten, von denen zwei mittlerweile gestorben sind (ich glaube beide unter 40000h. Diese wurden durch 2x16TB Seagates (ich glaube Ironwolf) ersetzt von denen ich sowieso 4 in einer RS verwende um Teilegleichheit zu haben. Von denen habe ich insgesamt 6 seit 2 Jahren im Einsatz und bin bisher zufrieden.

Je nachdem wie viele Platten du nutzen möchtest wären vllt auch SSDs interessant. Die Preise sind mittlerweile (für meinen Geschmack) genug gefallen, dass ich testweise die nächste defekte Platte durch eine SSD ersetzen würde um Erfahrungen zu sammeln. Ich habe 2x500GB Samsung Evos als Cache am laufen und in ca. zwei Jahren wurden ca 7% Reserven verbraucht. Der Energieverbrauch von Festplatten ist nicht zu unterschätzen, meine voll bestückte 1817+ zieht ca. 80W und die RS1221+ mit 4x16TB ca 60W.

Zusätzlich habe ich als Backup Server noch 3 0815 WD Platten und eine alte HGST am laufen. Die WDs sind SMR und haben eine katastrophale Performance. Da ich damit nur Nachts Backups ziehe tut das nicht weh aber konventionelle Platten sind deutlich performanter. SMR würde ich niemals produktiv nutzen.

Ich habe das vor kurzem im Bekanntenkreis miterlebt: Die krebskranke Person hat sich ein Bett nach Hause bringen lassen und hat sich zum Sterben hingelegt. Sie musste tagelang bewusst nix trinken um zu verdursten und die Verwandschaft hatte noch die ehrenvolle Aufgabe regelmäßig zu schauen, ob sie zufällig gestorben ist. Das war für alle Beteiligten anstrengend und ein absolut unnötiges Leid. Sie hatte schmerzen, war klar im Kopf und wollte nicht mehr. Wieso kann man das nicht respektieren? Wieso muss man auf solche nicht humane Varianten zurückgreifen, wenn es auch ohne Leid gehen könnte? Mindestens mal in solchen Fällen ohne Hoffnung auf Besserung sollte es legal möglich sein.

Ein alter Kollege hat sich ein (günstiges) Grundstück an einer Bundesstraße gekauft und dort gebaut. Danach hat er sich über LKW Lärm beschwert. Der ist allen so lange auf die Nerven gegangen, bis er eine Lärmschutzwand vor seinem Grundstück bekommen hat. Manche kommen also mit der Masche sogar noch durch…

Fuck Starbucks! Except they are absolutely overpriced there is one thing I will never forget: Back when corona hit us in Germany the government decided to lower the VAT to restaurants because everybody was staying at home and a lot of restaurants had financial problems.

Starbucks - being the nice restaurant where everybody usually sits inside and never takes something to go - asked the same price as before, and kept the difference for profit.

Pepperidge farm remembers! You are on my blacklist now 😄 Even if I can not destroy a huge company I will never ever pay Starbucks another cent in my life. I also convince people to get our coffees elsewhere.

Don’t be so pessimistic. Every generation had it’s problems and we are still alive. People tend to think they and their situations are special. That’s not true.

People this days, especially the younger generations, are very pessimistic. They seem to not even try to have a good life since it will end soon it seems. This will cause a lot of brilliant minds to let their potential die slowly while realizing later in life they could have done better.

You have to understand one important thing: While a situation is bad there can still be a positive trend. Less people die of hunger, Corona killed significantly less people than the Spanish flu. Etc.

Even if the climate changes, somehow mankind will survive. AI want kill all jobs since AI doesn’t have hands. There is so much stuff outside that needs human intellect. Don’t let the media and zeitgeist let kill your intellect people. Be optimistic!
