This crap has to be part of Krasnov’s mission to weaken and dismantle the US.

The entire developed world has fertility rates well below population maintenance levels. Countries are going to need to attract immigrants to keep their work forces and tax bases stable, never mind growing them.

The USA is going to have problems attracting immigrants for decades if not generations, unless some crazy shit unexpectedly changes for the better with our government.

But is everyone saying they must have background noise either 100% of the time or 0% of the time?

I think the meme was worded reasonably well. It could easily have said it in a more broadly relatable way like “I like to listen to music while I work” where many neurotypical people would agree. It’s like how people like to say they have OCD because they clean up after themselves and put things away.

Hey, I get where you're coming from, especially since everything calmed down before I checked the reply.

However, I want you to consider where I came from. Like literally what led me here. It was from my "All" feed. I don't really recognize the name of this community, so it's probably either my first time interacting with a post here, or I've interacted with the community in the past but was also ignorant of where the posts were coming from.

So when I referred to the "request," it wasn't because I read the rules and subscribed and then came in to plead that I get special rules. It was because I was close to tapping "Post" and I saw some caption text asking for only women to reply. That's why I said anything.

One of the things that keeps me coming back to Lemmy every single day is being able to hear the direct words of people very different from me without having to go through algorithms and corporate filters. When it comes to communities on here dedicated to a certain demographic or to marginalized groups, it's usually pretty clearly "X group and allies" because it's more about having a safe space and less about exclusion or gatekeeping. And it seems like the decent folks here are no different!

And I'm not accusing you of the exclusion/gatekeeping stuff. I get that it was just a rush of anger with my wording and with you actually knowing the community rules, etc. But hey now thanks to this I'm going to subscribe and follow this community. And maybe I'll break the letter of the law and comment again, but I'll probably follow the spirit of the law 99% of the time. :)

Yeah, it feels like an actual life hack in the original spirit of the term, rather than the modern usage that just means a recommendation.

It’s such a simple thing, but one that’s easy to not think of because it’s just not that common to combine couch + desktop monitor(s). It is so damn nice.

And, if you’re middle aged like me, it’s even a bit nostalgic. It reminds me of the high school and college days where instead of doomscrolling on a phone for hours, we would sit at a desktop PC for hours enjoying that good old internet. That internet was old enough to be wild and free (not corpo-enshittified), but new enough that leaving home and going to college meant upgrading from <= 56kbps to 10Mbps.

I’m sitting here looking at C files that have existed for well over a decade, and this thread makes me feel like I’m living in luxury and only one notch below vibe coding.

White dude here, in the US, currently sitting at work. (Sorry to disobey the “women only community” request, but I hope this is constructive and maybe even reaches some angry guy lurking.)

And I’m walking on fuckin’ sunshine over here because I’m nice to people and I got myself out of the Conservatism Spectrum Disorder shit that I was born into.

It’s funny how things work…

Being white? Fine. I’ve never been attacked for it, even by people who have very much the opposite of white privilege.

Being a dude? Also working out well. I have a hell of a sex drive for a middle aged dad-bodder, and of course there are attractive people at work, yet I have managed to not stalk or grab or attack or cat call anybody. (the exception for some of those is my wife, in a good way)

There are a whole lot of bad men out there. Being a good one requires recognizing that. If you’re already resisting that concept then you’re already way off track because we’re talking about half of humanity.

And if you feel like you’re walking on eggshells, yeah maybe it’s some other toxic person’s fault, but make sure to take a long hard look at yourself too. That feeling of self-consciousness or embarrassment might be you starting to get it.

After going over time, Republican Rep. Cody Vasut ordered the sergeant-at-arms to remove Martin from the hearing. Video shows Martin being restrained by officers and pulled from the room as he shouted “You have no shame” and “History might not remember you at all.”

Ah there it is, the technicality.

Conservative train of thought be like:

He broke a rule… That was illegal… He’s a criminal… ~He’s black~ He has chosen to be a thug rather than part of polite society and should be thrown in jail with the rest of them! He’s less than human! Throw him in the wood chipper!

Ugh. In the process of writing this I was exaggerating to be funny. But I also just read the recent post about Dachau and the parallels to the concentration camps this damn country is running.

Jesus fucking christ. I’ve seen some really messed up gerrymandered district maps with insane shapes, but the blatant encircling shape of this one makes it just brutal.

Thats why I'm not picking sides. It doesn't really matter and i don't have to. If they start the shit its the same for everybody.

Well for us “choosing sides” is just an exercise for the purpose of discussion. Nobody cares what we as individuals think, and in reality most people will choose the same thing as you: keep my head down and wait for the distant craziness to die down.

But nations have things differently, especially if their geography makes them a target. There are many possible outcomes between world peace and nuclear armageddon. Plus there could be various economic & trade effects they might consider even more relevant than physical safety.

Edit to add: Not to repeat myself, but the probability of “if they start the shit” happening can also be affected by what choice a nation makes. Since the consequences of a war could quickly spiral to world-ending levels, making the choice that provides the greatest deterrence is arguably more important than choosing the “good” side.

I'm not super informed on Wayland, and this analogy really helped, thanks!

I am a Mint fan, so one of the minority still running X11. As long as I can do what I need to on my PC, though, I am content to wait until the distro maintainers do the upgrade.

I guess using Mint in the first place means I don't prioritize running all the cutting edge versions of everything, lol.

Oh I’m well aware! The TV actually has a dedicated PC connected to it that’s hidden behind the wall. I’m going to move that PC out of there to a desktop for my kid, but I digress.

I mentioned the family context because that’s what makes the swing-out monitor awesome. We can be watching a movie or even playing a game together on the TV, but in my field of view I have the monitor floating off to the side of the TV. It’s like playing on a phone, but it doesn’t occupy my hands, it has a 27 inch 144Hz screen, and it’s a proper open platform that’s running linux.

Plus having my monitor in addition to the TV means that there’s already a 2-player LAN ready to go at all times. If it’s something cross platform where my kid can use phone or tablet (like Roblox which seems to have great cross platform support) then it’s 3-4 players with their own screens.

At this point I am team "use phones less, use Linux PCs more" unless I am away from home.

I'm just chilling on my couch with my family. Having a nice ergo trackball and a monitor on an arm that can swing out in front of me is a game changer.
