I'm planning on bringing a spare phone only on my trips to the US.

Apologies, but what is NCMEC? I'll have a look to see what we can implement.

I recently build a PC and this is what I learned:

  1. Modern CPUs get crazy hot. AIO water cooling could make sense depending on what CPU you use
  2. GPUs are expensive but higher end GPUs will make the build last longer. Nvidia is a must for anything related to AI.
  3. NVME storage is a no brainer option for a new build
  4. Make sure the motherboard supports the RAM or doesn't throttle it
  5. If you have the space a larger case will be better for cooling an upgrades. GPUs get crazy large.

Overall go to pcpartpicker and look at what people have build with your choice of GPU / CPU.

Thank you for the offer. It's super appreciated. Right now I don't think it's necessary, but who knows what the future of the internet holds. If you have any idea or suggestion yourself, don't hesitate in letting me know!

Hello! Apologies for not seeing this earlier.

In case anyone's wondering my position on this matter, it's this:

  • There is 0.00% chance that yiffit.net or packmates.org will implement any sort of ID verification system. I'd rather host the site in any other different jurisdiction than to jeopardize the privacy of our users or contribute to a version of the internet that's riddled with surveillance nightmares.

In the worst case scenario the site would even change owners (if my physical jurisdiction played a role in the matter) or I'd find any other way. This is not something I'm worried about since we have no shareholders, no need to be profitable in any way, and don't report to anyone but to ourselves.

Furthermore, if the internet continues going down such a path and there is a legal way to help people circumvent draconian restrictions by offering services such as a VPN, I would definitely look into hosting such a service. If there's anything I'm afraid of, it's the amount of time and effort I know I'm capable of recklessly sinking into privacy-oriented projects just to spite anti-queer, authoritarian and surveillance-state political initiatives :P

So, rest assured that Yiffit and Packmates will not make such ID a verification ever a requirement and I'd even encourage you to find ways to avoid any sites that make such requirements.

PS. We're now hosted in Germany by the way!

A good decision.

Here it says that this should not be possible in Australia due to the immobilizers.

Maybe some thieves believe all KIAs and Hyundays are targets and eventually some are stolen due to other factors.

It's worth mentioning that this impacts only US vehicles from those brands.

Hmmm... anyone knows the resources a matrix instance uses? Depending on how much is I could host one as long as someone helps with sysadmin management.

I messaged Dessalines and proposed a feature to have them block our communities while we could keep getting their content and participating in their communities.

Awoooo!

This new version introduced a system so that your instance stops sending out content to other instances that are supposedly dead / offline.

Unfortunately for some reason there's false positives. When I checked comparing the results from a curl request vs the information in our Lemmy database I found over 350+ false positives.

In the DB there is a table called "instance" which has a column called "updated". If the date on that column is older than 3 days, your server will stop sending any content to those instances.

For some reason I had entries that were dated as last being alive in July, while actually they were always up. If an entry is incorrect, you can fix it by manually using an update statement and adding today's date. If your instance is not too large you can safely update all entries to today's date and check if everything works as expected from then on any new content created on your instances.

The dead instances won't have an impact unless your instance is larger and generates more content, thus it might be easier to simply update all entries and have Lemmy believe they're all alive if you start noticing wonky behavior and don't want to check one by one.

If you don't know how to access the database run this command where domaincom is your instance domain without the dot.

  1. docker exec -it domaincom_postgres_1 busybox /bin/sh

  2. psql -U

(The default user is 'lemmy') You could technically do this is one single step, but it's good to know the command to get shell access to the container itself if you didn't know how to.

This should give you access to a postgres CLI interface. Use \c to connect, \dt to list tables and \d+ tablename to list table definition. You can also run SQL queries from there.

Try with this query: SELECT * from instance to list all instances and their updated date.

You can use other SQL queries to get better results or correct false positives. Just be careful with what you execute since there's no undo.

The corporate and advertising jargon reads like something utterly obscene and wrong.

Someone posted this over on Reddit right when it happened and I apparently saved it. I'm cleaning out my bookmarks and came across it. I hought you'd like to see why it's good news that we found Lemmy.

Edit: I took a screenshot in case it gets deleted.

I'm happy to open our second weekly discussion topic:

This week we're going to cover a phenomenon that's been around in the fandom forever but which has resurfaced these last few years in the form of typically younger furs (13-21), often called "puriteens".

This new manifestation of reformists tend to be very vocal in their opposition of certain NSFW traits in furry characters such as anatomically correct genitalia (knots, sheaths, etc) as well as feral yiff / feral NSFW artwork.

Typically active on twitter, but progressively also on other platforms, people holding these beliefs are controversial due to their tendency of conflating and accusing people who enjoy this type of NSFW depicts of animal molestation.

I'm trying to be mostly neutral in this description, so please accept my apologies if the vocabulary is a bit too formal. Anyways, here's a few key questions:

  • How should the furry fandom react? Embrace it? Reject it? And if so, how to deal with the risk of being "called out"?

  • Is their point valid but are they simply to loud and aggressive?

  • Or are their methods correct and it's time that the fandom received a wake-up call?

Please feel free to share any opinions that you have. As always this thread will stay up for at least a week and will then be locked. So make sure to voice your opinion in time!

Also, by leaving a comment you can, if you want, in the same comment propose a new topic for next week's discussion!

Note: this topic is not marked as NSFW as it is educational, thus please don't be too explicit in your wording or use spoilers to hide any potential explicit text or images that you might want to use.

Edit: This went a bit out of hand, but it's very very late here and I might not be around until later tomorrow so I'm locking this thread and have removed any comments that went down a tangent while I figure things out. Tomorrow (technically today) I'll try to reply to any DMs that you have sent and will try to see if we can reopen the topic and how.
