I suppose you've never seen snow then? Definitely try if you get some chance. I wish it snowed more often where I live.

I have no idea what the coolest temp has been for me, but probably around -10C?

Just type lemmy.ml/c/communityname@lemmy.world while logged in at lemmy.ml

Do a refresh if it gives you an error the first time.

Amazing job. This whole post deserves way more upvotes.

As an instance admin I gladly host user files.

One thing to take into account is that images posted by an instanceA user on an instanceB community will still be hosted on instance A.

So as long as an instance doesn't host more users than it can handle it should be fine.

I believe it can spoil if exposed to high humidity or water.

I remember when imgur used to be good.

lemmy-ui actually groups them together. It all depends on the app / frontend implementation that you're using.

This reads like some super shady mystery.

In case anyone's wondering this is what we instance admins can see in the database. In this case it's an obvious example, but this can be used to detect patterns of vote manipulation.

Yo FIrefox just accepted my extension which makes interaction with other lemmy instances easier.

Chrome still tbc but Google should've accepted it by this time next week methinks.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/lemmy-link-redundant/

https://github.com/FackJox/lemmy-link

It adds a small icon to other instances so that you can easily open it in your own lemmy instance for interaction etc.

It's simple, rough and ready but super useful, just input your lemmy instance in settings and then enable it for all sites or just the lemmy sites you want and hey presto.

Open for ideas, collaboration and feedback as always :)

What things do you like better now and what do you miss from older times?

I feel extremely stupid for noticing this just now.

I run a furry instance which has sfw content but also nsfw, and I'm worried about having the whole instance blocked due to other instances being iffy about furry stuff.

When you visit a remote community from your instance, and if you're an admin, you can click on "remove". Not only will the community stay removed even if users search for it again, but it's also reversible in case you change your mind. (Don't use purge because it'll forget you wanted the community removed and it'll be searchable again).

I wish there was an option to silence a community so that users who really wanted to see something can still search and subscribe, but without it appearing in public lists or timelines, but this is the next best thing.

The huge benefit here is that you don't block the instance's users to participate in your communities nor do you prevent your users to participate in communities that you see appropriate for your instance. Overall it preserves federation which is the main point and strength of federated platforms.

So if you come across furry stuff you don't like for your instance, just remove the community. Thank you <3

sighs There's been a lot of small changes in the last two days. And to topi it off yesterday we had a moderation incident which lead me to restrict community creation.

It might be my subjective perception because I've had to deal with all the stuff and then write every update to the rules and announcement, but I am worried you're feeling overwhelmed with all these small changes and announcements.

Fortunately I think the current setup should cover our bases for some time while I work in the background on staff onboarding to help me out with moderation.

Despite the small adjustments I still want this place to be as open as possible, allowing anyone to have and run their own community.

Anyways, gonna grab a bite. I hope everyone here has a good day :D

I'm honestly excited and humbled by the huge amount of support the instance has received so far. It really feels like we're building something special.

I don't know if you've ever been in that situation, but imagine you wanted to build a huge sand castle or a fort with your friends, and everyone chips in. Someone goes like "I know! I can build a tower", another then says "and I'll build the moat", while in the background someone is yelling "leave something for me, I'm gonna run and fetch is some soda!".

It feels a bit like that.

Tomorrow I'll share a little bit more about the vision, a possible mini-roadmap, but also about some challenges we'll likely face.

But now I just want to thank everyone and give you a big hug!

The server has ample resources with double the max used RAM and CPU usage doesn't go above 25%. Yet there seems to be some bottleneck and it wasn't as slow when I first created the instance.

This affects local posts and comments as well, so I doubt it's the federation settings that were mentioned this morning.

Thank you!

Some of you may have noticed that federated actions are slow to synchronize between Lemmy instances. This is most likely because of the setting "Federation worker count" under /admin. It determines how many federation activities can be sent out at once. The default value is 64 which is enough for small or medium sized instances. But for large instances it needs to be increased.

Grep the server logs for "Maximum number of activitypub workers reached" and "Activity queue stats" to confirm that this affects you. For lemmy.ml I just changed the value to 512, you have to experiment what is sufficient. The new value is only applied after restarting Lemmy. In my case changing the value through the website didnt work (maybe because its overloaded). Instead I had to update local_site.federation_worker_count directly in the database.

People really really really need to leave Twitter already.

I hate the damage that Apple seems to have done in this regard. I also hate it when apps hide features because "they're for power users and regular users won't understand them".

Sure, there's a difference between UX being so bad that it's frustrating to use and "we need to simplify things because we don't want to scare the users".

Lemmy UI has its problems to solve and features to add, but it's not bad, even on mobile. I've been using it extensively and it does fine all things considered.

~~Anyways, at this point I believe there's even a benefit to making a UI a bit ugly and scary, so you end up with a higher quality of users instead of quantity, as cold as it might sound.~~

Edit: I didn't mean to just talk about Lemmy. That was just an example and I understand that for a social platform numbers are important. My rant was more general in regards to the dumbing down of UI in all areas.

Edit2: I'm sorry. I didn't want to come off as elitist. I'm actually concerned about the loss of power user features more than non-tech savvy users having a bad time.
