you:

True but you need to know more than someone who only has a GED is going to know about macroeconomics and diplomacy.

me:

A degree doesn’t prove a person actually applied themselves and absorbed the information, and auto-didacts can absolutely study macroecon and diplomacy.

The topic started about Swift, but your claim was bigger than her. Thus my response was to your larger claim, not about Swift.

Yes, and presumably anyone in the position we're talking about is somebody who would have devoted a decade to their education in the field. Do you think I'm talking about "I do my own research" types? No, I'm talking about real actual auto-didacts.

Definitionally we aren't talking about "your average person who has a GED," Jesus fucking Christ.

You can absolutely self-teach math and macroecon. I'm not trying to claim that Swift has, or would, or that it is an easy thing to teach, but the idea that it is somehow outside the bounds of the auto-didact is absurd.

Oh weird, they're showing up under the "Chat" option for some reason?

I'm so confused by this post.

[–] Vespair@lemm.ee 9 points 2 months ago (5 children)

So this is a weird one.... I'm seeing in the post details that there's 8 comments on this post, but none are showing as visible to me.

I'm also not seeing anything in the modlog for this post.... so where are all the comments?

Did we decide to start fucking shadowbanning on Lemmy or something or is there some other explanation here?

If you know about the Tree-star, it's time to have a doctor check out your B-star.

Man, I fucking love LJS and wish I had one within driving distance.

Nothing like ordering a fish & chicken plank combo and not knowing which of the identical diamond-shaped planks is which before biting.

...

It's like people who drink bean water making fun of other people who drink bean water, and attaching way too goddamn much to all of it.

Personally, I think it's extremely unlikely. That's why I think Apatheism is the way:

The theist says there is a God with certainty, the atheist says there is no God with certainty, the agnostic says we cannot be certain the existence of God, and the apatheist says "guys why are we wasting our time stressing out about unknowables? Let's go get a pizza."

This suggests a cosmic reason or purpose, yet I find no evidence for that conclusion exists.

There just might simply not be a "why?"

[–] Vespair@lemm.ee 2 points 2 months ago

Absolutely. But the harrowing part is realizing this applies to some folks we deem delusional in the context of our world too.

Cliffdiver kick ass

This was my favorite song for like a decade.

Starting with 2020 and going up through 2023, what were your albums of the year each year? And if you're willing to expand, what albums you been listening to so far in 2024 that have stood out to you?

I'll leave my own response in a comment so as to not clog the screen and detract from the question

This band is legitimately a tiny unknown group from Colorado, but their album "RIP Pistachio" was my album of the year in 2021. Just a perfect vibe, I promise.

I love Lights so much, and this track is a banger.

I didn't link the "official" video because it's not the whole song, but it is absolutely also worth watching as it gives you the background on the song:

Copied from a youtube comment on the official video, here's a story from producer Elite about what's going on in that video:

The “Neighbors” story is crazy. Basically Cole rented out a house in North Carolina. It’s not for him; it’s like a safe haven/creative workspace for all the Dreamville artists and producers. We call it the Sheltuh, and a lot of the album was recorded there.. It’s basically a studio in a basement, in the woods.

It’s also in the suburbs of a pretty wealthy neighborhood in North Carolina. So you have, predominately, African-Americans coming in and out of this house. Ubers coming, and every once in awhile you’ll see a group of us outside on the porch smoking weed. So the neighbors started getting real paranoid.

Apparently what happened was, we were all in Austin, Texas, for SXSW; thankfully no one was in the house when this went down. One of the neighbors told the police we were growing weed or selling drugs out of this house. And there was a huge investigation, like a million-dollar investigation. They flew helicopters over, sent an entire SWAT team armed with weapons, broke down the door and searched the whole house. Thankfully nobody was in the house. Our engineer Juro “Mez” Davis had just stepped out for lunch and he came back and saw the SWAT team busting down the door.

They go downstairs and all they see is a studio, and obviously they felt stupid. It’s just crazy ironic because out of anybody, they picked the wrong person. J. Cole is the last person to do anything like that. He’s out here doing extremely positive things for the community and for young artists. Because of obvious racism from the neighbors, the police were called and a raid took place."

Codefendant's multi-genre album "This Is Crime Wave" was easily my top album of 2023, absolutely blew my mind. Check out the whole album if you haven't heard it yet
