I agree that the UI for discord sucks shit, however my thinking is aligned with what another commenter said, its what people already know and are used to. Trying to make anything new will turn users off. I'm very open to being proven wrong about that assumption though. I'd love for a foss project to have better UI/UX than discord.

Thats fair, I like repairing things as well! For the most part I've strayed from soldering because I feel like the possibility of me screwing something up is high. I can proficiently take Something apart, replace a part and put it back together though! :P

I know some basic soldering but Im not sure if I know enough. Like, I've never used flux before, and I have a basic cheapo iron I spent maybe $40 on. I'm also completely lost on the electrical side of things. I have a multimeter, but I couldn't tell you what the difference between wattage, voltage, current and amperage is.

Is there any good resources you'd know of to point me to in terms of getting down the same kind of skillset you think would be required to do this? Like, any videos, articles, books, or just basic online searches I should do to gain the knowledge?

I appreciate you taking the time :)

Hey! I just saw this post linked on another one in the steam deck comm. I was wondering, how difficult was this to do, and was there any guide you followed? Ive been wanting to do this myself but the most Ive done so far is replace the charger port on the 3ds with another oem 3ds charger

Discord is where people are at. You start with something else you're asking for another Matrix or XMPP because people will not understand a new interface

start with a discord clone

make it e2ee

make it federated

i feel like it shouldnt be this hard, but I'm not the one developing matrix, nor XMPP, nor the 3rd smaller option you the reader is wanting me to list that I am unaware of

"I bought another book"

  • transactional
  • people will ask if you REALLY need more books
  • reminds you you live under capitalism and sends your money to someone who has enough money already

"i downloaded this PDF, and found a way to directly support the author (donation of some sort, some sort of merchandise, some other third thing)"

  • you didnt have to pay 3 different middlemen (a bookstore, a publisher, the manufacturer)
  • you either kept more of your money, or the author got more than if you had bought the book
  • you can share the pdf with friends and family, and it isnt taking up space.

finding a way to support the author is optional if its a college textbook or some shit you're required to have.

Yes, with a heavy grain of salt.

First- it seems like a huge pain in the ass to get your bootloader unlocked (a locked bootloader can not have custom ROMs installed) Relavent XDA thread

Second- None of the ROMs I listed officially support your device it appears. However, there are other ROMs available for the device. I can not speak to their reputability or trustability. XDA thread of various ROMs available for the device.

The only ROM I listed which can be used on your device is an unofficial LineageOS port.

A great place to look, ask, and get help is at the XDAForums for your device. They usually have helpful and friendly people who can help you as long as you read their previous relavent threads first.

If at some point you are looking to replace your current phone, a good place to look for recommendations is CalyxOS' modern devices page. The reason I recommend using CalyxOS' device page over something like Graphene's is because in many parts of the world Google's Pixel is not available. Calyx includes devices that are easier to get such as some Motorola's, and other OEMs on a best-case basis.

He helped microsoft

and he thought that was a good idea ?? Open source the project buddy. You might get sued but its worth it if its actually going to be helpful for climate researchers.
