My opinion is he knows ships will be sunk so he wants it to be someone else's ships. Let's not forget Iran has a ton of mini submarines probably sitting quietly waiting.
Should really keep out of it altogether imo, I think he just wants other countries to take the losses and not his own ships.

I think China is just trying to wait Trump out but probably getting angrier at everything he does. I could be wrong but I think they'll wait until they're on top and Taiwan wants to join willingly.
That said the way China's modernising their military and churning out everything from hybrid Tanks, ships and jets it's almost like they are in world war 3 already.
