Make sure "show bottom navigation" is enabled in settings and then you should see the message & profile icon in the lower right when viewing the home page.

Haha I think she's here to greet people to the fediverse! She was wearing a different shirt when she messaged me! 
Alternatively, enable both those options in the "lateral menu" settings.
