This should be updated with the US Supreme Court hearing the appeal against Colorado Supreme Court removing Trump from the ballot, which will start being heard on 8 Feb.

Losers gonna lose.

Personally I'd say that reddit starting to self-host stuff was a big turning point in when the site started getting shit.

You're being modest. "Here and there" does nothing to credit the significance of what you do. Penicillin is used "here and there".

I'm sure there are other professionals who could do more, just as I'm sure that you aren't 100% focused on lemm.ee (not that you should have to be), but history so far has shown that you're far ahead of the curve in providing a stable platform - one that other instances should aspire to.

I'm going to ignore this post and continue to upload to 3rd party hosts. I don't want to drain the resources here any more than necessasry!

The post is in /c/meta@lemm.ee, though it's one that I missed.

Non-instance agnostic link (because there are no instance agnostic links for comments or posts): https://lemm.ee/post/19843583

I really wish instances didn't links for their comments and posts. lemmy.world/comment/123456 is a different link to lemm.ee/comment/123456, when really it should simply be that lemmy.world/comment/123456 is the same as lemm.ee/comment/123456@lemmy.world.

There was an international venture to create an SSTO, with the UK making engines and Europe making the fuselage, called Skylon. I'm not sure what the current status is, but it did indeed Work In Kerbal Space Program.

And yeah, that is a very relevant XKCD! More to the point, these days I can't look at the Millenium Falcon without thinking "NOO! They need to point the other way and burn retrograde so they won't crash into Yavin IV!!" The concepts are alien and not intuitive, like quantum mechanics, but once you accept them it becomes a new way of looking at and understanding the world.

It's pretty cool that you can bend orbital manuevers with just some little tags, and see how easily passing by a planet or moon might give you the opportunity to accelerate or decelerate and drastically alter your orbit. Pass on the inside and you can slow down and tighten your orbit, pass on the outside and you can speed up or stretch it out.

A ban wouldn't work, because data collection is endemic. The cat is out of the bag.

Compensation could work through legislation and a commercial structure that dictates how things should be bought and sold. In Germany, rent is decided by the local town hall (Rathaus) on a per square metre basis. Such a system is not without flaws, but it's better than unfettered abuse by those who have against those who have not.

The man always wakes up ready to prepare a coconut for breakfast. How is that wrong?

Please do remove it entirely.

I manufacture data about myself. Businesses want to collect this data for their commercial benefit and profit, without paying me. Cookie splash screens almost provide a method for this to happen legitimately, while still not providing me fair consideration.

Businesses should be prohibited from collecting user data, from taking value, without paying for it.
