i don't think it should be overtly leftist, not at the start at least.
It should be a slightly older Duke who realized he was a bit of an ass in the past, who now makes an effort to respect everyone and not offend people who haven't done anything wrong, but he struggles with it and often has to apologize and even then he always ends up making yet another slip that he doesn't catch.
Then throughout the game he realizes that neonazis are taking over and he goes from unknowingly playing into their hands, to horrified, to angry and fighting back with the vibe of a stereotypical "dad who doesn't like the boy courting his daughter" vibe, constantly insulting the fascist goons like he did in the past.

personality is the hard limit, and appearance is the soft limit
if you're miserable to be around then.. i'm not gonna be around you..
if you're ugly that's unfortunate for both of us, but mercifully nature has programmed us to care less about that the more we spend time with someone, so if you're sufficiently pleasant to be around it'll probably work out anyways.
it helps for the situations it's actually evolved for: running from a fucking lion that burst out of the bush
the whole point is that without having to consciously decide to, you start running or fighting and doing so with full force thanks to all the adrenaline, then after you've run away or made the nasty thing run away you can analyze the situation and do damage control
it depends on why you're not calm, if it's not due to anger then being told to calm down might work, and if it's fear then having someone calmly say "hey hey calm down, it's ok" will work by sheer dint of seeing someone else obviously not being bothered
both jaws and t.rex would realistically just be them ignoring you because you look as appetizing as a single chicken foot

ngl a part of me does kinda want an ice globe earth, living in that kind of environment is so.. interesting
like the people living on antarctic research stations, inside the station it's just a slightly weird house but outside it's so fucking cold that you have to consider that fuel might freeze..
i wonder if people expect pilots to know every single error checklist..
