Here’s a substack take from Janet Nance ‘Subspace Chatter’

I do like the idea of her being some kind of traveler better than being sacrificed as a fixed point guardian.

But then that commitment to be frozen as a perpetual guardian what makes her sacrifice meaningful.

My problem is that the episode was written from Pike’s perspective rather than Batel’s so that we heard her telling Pike what she was going to to and why rather than seeing that process of acceptance and noble sacrifice from her side.

Relative to the abysmal corporate communications Star Trek has received as a franchise since the ViacomCBS merger (while at the same time largely shutting down more informal social media outreach from anyone but the showrunners), this shows some promise.

It’s hard to imagine that the Skydance merged firm would be yet worse than Paramount for corporate managed communications.

I find that I need to do some other activity while listening to podcasts. Often it’s a puzzle game or other phone activity that doesn’t require unbroken concentration.

But the quality of the sound and voiceovers or voice acting is really crucial to holding my attention.

In this case, it’s really unfortunate that Sonja Cassidy was cast as Dr. Lear. Or, perhaps it’s just unfortunate that she was asked to use an American accent. While some actors can maintain the quality of their performances in another accent, there are British actors who end up with muddy enunciation or less credible performances even if the accent is fine.

Cassidy’s performance as Dr. Lear sounds more like reading than acting for much of the opening minutes. Alternately, her expression, when it does happen, seems artificial. The unpolished performance is all the more noticeable in contrast to the excellent performances by George Takei as Sulu, Tim Russ as Tuvok and Wrenn Schmidt as Marla McGiver, and even the brief interjections of chair of the review committee are more compelling.

Given how many lines she’s given in the opening minutes as the framing story sets the stage, it’s truly unfortunate.

Perhaps all Flint needed was to surround himself with a lot of genuine Earth artifacts (not replicated) to ensure that he had the necessary isotopes or quantum signatures or whatever that Lanthanites need to retain their longevity.

My headcanon is that this is an in-universe show that the kids on the Enterprise D enjoyed.

Boimler grew up with it and has ALL the nostalgic merch. Mariner also has the merch hidden in the ceiling panels but would never admit to it.

I think you’re thinking about the 1979 novel Enemy Mine, and 1985 movie. Which itself was building off any number of shipwreck and wartime survival tales.

Enemy Mine has been repeatedly adapted to Trek shows from TNG’s early episode where Geordi and a Romulan survive together.

Using this trope again with a ‘curious demigods running experiments’ twist is novel enough. In fact, it’s harder to believe that Arena was the first time the Metrons put humanity and Gorn into one-on-one engagement.

As for the Martian, book or movie, they’re both pretty weak, derivative, middle school stuff. They’re overhyped and couldn’t hold the attention of the hard scientists in our household. If the middle school (sanitized) version of the book hadn’t been so hyped for our kids, we wouldn’t have made the effort to slog through it before they read it.

Glad that you’re getting to read Destiny.

The thing is that, being an avid TrekLit reader, I’d previously just thought your alias was a deep cut rather than your own creation. Either is very cool.

Most of the shows with ‘teenagers’ have casts in their late twenties or thirties.

I have a similar basket weave pattern that I like to use for baby or crib blankets.

I make slightly larger blocks and rely on stitch markers but as OP says it’s something one can knit without having to give it one’s full attention.

It’s also a nice clean pattern that doesn’t have the risk of catching on things. It also washes and wears well.

It seems the Metron scene was necessary for the very vocal contingent of fans who have relentlessly expressed their outrage about the Gorn storyline not fitting in their headcanon about Arena.

 

Earlier this week Disney announced (whinged) that it expected a $ 300 million revenue loss attributable to the strike.

Today, The Hollywood Reporter says sources are reporting cost-cutting at Warner Brothers Television Group.

the studio has suspended a number of overall deals for its top creatives including J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot (Duster), Greg Berlanti (Superman & Lois), Chuck Lorre (Bob Hearts Abishola), Bill Lawrence (Shrinking), John Wells (Maid), Mindy Kaling (Sex Lives of College Girls). Sources say Lorre’s multiyear pact with his decades-long studio was quietly suspended in May, a week into the strike, with Wells’ deal a month later.

Deadline has a similar report but interprets the news as more likely ‘suspend and extend’ arrangements.

One has to wonder why the major content producers are continuing side with Netflix, Amazon and Apple which are primarily streamers.

 

I was initially delighted to see BBC amplifying the celebration of TAS’ 50th anniversary. Then I read this piece.

Half a day later I’m still annoyed at the number of easily verifiable errors and that with the BBC’s trusted source credibility, the power that this piece can have to create uncertainty on settled issues.

First there are 22 episodes of TAS not the 20 claimed in the article.

Second, it’s established that Gene Roddenberry’s rejection of TAS as canon was overstated or at least inconsistent (and that Richard Arnold’s own view was a factor in magnifying this question in early TNG production). The BBC article overstates this as fact.

Third, it ignores the fact that Paramount as the rights holder has decided to treat TAS as canon. The article concludes with a statement that this continues as an open question. While it might have been fair to say that for a number of fans, this remains a question, it’s not accurate to portray this as an official position even just implicitly.

Anyone else irritated by this?

An interesting, deliberately thought provoking 🤔 question for a lazy long weekend Sunday morning…

Setting aside whether specific fans like specific ‘gimmicks’ (crossovers, musicals, bringing back Kirk or Khan) or tropes (transporter malfunctions), Space.com is posing the hypothesis that the proportion was too high in Strange New Worlds second season.

There’s no arguing that the season was successful in drawing in large audiences week after week. Taking a look back though, was there too much trippy-Trek(TM) dessert and not enough of a meaty main course? YMMV surely.

For my part, I can both agree that trippy Trek is something I’ve been wanting more of, and that I would have welcomed 2 or 3 more episodes were more grounded or gave the opportunity to see more of Una as a leader and dug into Ortegas backstory.

The 90s shows seemed to be bit embarrassed by trippyness, although Voyager found its pretext allowed even stern Janeway to pronounce ‘Weird is our business.’ One can argue that the high proportion in SNW is a feature, not a bug.

I’d still prefer a 12-15 episode season though.

It seems that today’s the day that Paramount’s embargo on ‘spoiler free’ (in theory) season reviews for Lower Decks season 4 comes off, and the first pro reviews are now posted by some who have seen the screeners.

  • each one of these 30-minute episodes is nearly perfect. Just as the USS Cerritos presents the workhorse of Starfleet, with Season 4, Lower Decks again proves it is the workhorse of the entire Star Trek franchise.

Apparently, in addition to the upcoming run of Goblin: MacBeth at Stratford Festival, Rebecca Northan (Horak’s collaborator) is already working on developing Goblin: Oedipus for an Alberta production next year.

This is good news for assuring that SNW’s 3rd season production will move ahead after the strike.

Greenlighting a couple of extra episodes and a 4th season would make strategic sense, but I’m just not willing to give Paramount the benefit of the doubt on that.
