Dams can fail. Just look at Libia right now. And I know not every country is Libia, but pretty much all dams in the US are fucked too and nothing is being done about it. This is all very expensive infrastructure that needs constant upkeep and investment and is disastrous if that for some reason isn't being done. Here in the Netherlands, there has been a massive project the past like 20 years to 'give rivers space' with wetlands and floodplains. It works well. I mean, we are literally the best in the world in managing water. 2 years ago a couple of rivers flooded. The city I lived in was already done with their part of the project. The floodplains flooded and everyone was safe, but another city which wasn't done yet flooded and some cities in Germany and Belgium did too.

Right now all my lectures at school are by this one professor who is notorious for just rambling incoherently for an hour and a half, and all of them are at 9 am. You can't expect me to not just turn off my alarm when it goes off at 7 in the morning with only that to look forward to.

I had a burn out and had been home recovering for about 4 months from January, and only slowly building back up since May, and have been back fully since late August, so it definitely feels like this. Time passes really quickly and unremarkably when you sit at home doing 'nothing'.

It has taken me 20 seconds and I still don't get it. Is it an upside down joke?

We have (very loosely translated) 'the innkeeper trusts his patrons as much as he trusts/knows himself' in Dutch. Or semantically more accurate would be 'an untrustworthy innkeeper distrusts his patrons'.

but as with any discipline, a big part of how much fun it is to learn has to do with how it's taught.

I teach (technically still in college, but true enough) basically the opposite of you, history, and this is very true. You can make history lessons fun and engaging and challenging, but it's also very easy to make them boring. Unfortunately, as you are also aware of, it's difficult to make these interesting lessons with the constraints of time (of which administrative bullshit takes up a lot), class sizes and government-mandated curriculums and tests.

Last year I had my internship at a pretty shitty school with abysmal guidance and support which meant I was teaching all on my own even though I shouldn't have been allowed to, and basically no curriculum. That sucked, but it also meant I had basically total freedom in what and how I taught, and the classes were 12 students maximum. I pretty much only did engaging and fun lessons for 4 months straight.

I'll do that when I actually have to be somewhere, because I don't see the point of making my last half hour of sleep shitty and I really have to get up anywah, but I'll definitely snooze on the weekends. I'll set my alarm at a time I find reasonable, but I'll often wake up and think 'fuck it, it's Saturday' and sleep in anyway lol

They mean that the people fucking with you by making noise on purpose are assholes

I feel the same way. When I've done a particularly difficult jigsaw puzzle or made a new dress with a cool original design I do feel proud and accomplished. I also feel very satisfied after finally doing some cleaning task because everything looks clean and nice. But with assignments or exams from school or whatever I don't. The only time I get a true feeling of accomplishment from anything school related is if I've made a really fucking slapping lesson and the kids thought it was fun and weren't out for blood that day, lol.

5 years for me lol

Agreed. It's not like not understanding technology is a causal consequence of age. Like you hit 55 and suddenly you don't get it anymore. My dad is a baby boomer and he's always had an interest in and thus was and still is good with computers, both hardware and software. That doesn't go away. He's less adept with smartphones though because he views them through a very utilitarian lense and doesn't really experiment and thus doesn't learn much about them. And he's literally never made any social media account because he doesn't give a fuck.
