here's a short video of St Mary's cemetery in Whitby: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_tflzCJYus (Whitby also has Larpool Cemetery, which was only like 20 years old when Stoker visited, but St. Mary's is the Dracula one and is several hundred years old.)

here's another short video of St Mary's cemetery. If I had to guess, I'd say Mina and her people were at the end of the walkway at this timestamp: https://youtu.be/pGzSsunFeoE?t=110

here's a walkthrough of modern Whitby. looks like a lot of the buildings date back a couple hundred years. https://youtu.be/6r1SsUo0_H0?t=1099

A lot more videos about Whitby up, but mostly full of fool talk by illsome normie "hosts" who bean’t cared a pinch of snuff about, it makes me ireful to think about! the ones above are pure walkthrough, no belderin. I must gang!

I was thinking more like: if the advertising is that bad but they can still sell their produce, it must be good.

asbestos mines

TIL asbestos is a naturally-occurring substance (I always thought it was synthetic!)

My gog, Mina's an Austen-level wit:

He will not admit anything, and downfaces everybody. If he can’t out-argue them he bullies them, and then takes their silence for agreement with his views.
...
I could see from the old fellow’s self-satisfied air and the way in which he looked round for the approval of his cronies that he was “showing off,” so I put in a word to keep him going
...
I nodded, for I thought it better to assent, though I did not quite understand his dialect.

That's no air-bleb. I'ma keep looking up pics of her by Kevin O'Neill, so maybe I can forget that whatshername played her in the 1992 Dracula movie:

The Raven (1963) is the movie for this Sunday's "monsterdon" watch party over on Mastodon, our fediverse sibling!

  • Just start watching that movie this Sunday, August 3, 2025 at 9pm ET / 8pm CT / 6pm PT which is 1am Monday UTC
  • and follow #monsterdon over on mastodon for live commentary. For example, you can follow that hashtag here: https://mastodon.social/tags/monsterdon
  • I usually open two web browser windows side-by-side on a computer. But you could follow the mastodon commentary on a phone app while watching the movie on TV or something.

How to watch the movie:

a 1963 American comedy Gothic horror film produced and directed by Roger Corman. The film stars Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, and Boris Karloff as a trio of rival sorcerers. The supporting cast includes Jack Nicholson as the son of Lorre's character.
...
Bosley Crowther of The New York Times panned the film as "comic-book nonsense ... Strickly [sic] a picture for the kiddies and the bird-brained, quote the critic."[10] Variety wrote that while Poe "might turn over in his crypt at this nonsensical adaptation of his immortal poem", Corman nevertheless "takes this premise and develops it expertly as a horror-comedy."[11] The Chicago Tribune called it "fairly thin fare, made up mostly of camera tricks, and some very obviously false scenery, but Peter Lorre's performance is mildly entertaining. Youngsters may find it fun."[12] A generally positive review in The Monthly Film Bulletin wrote that the film "starts off with the inestimable advantage of a script which not only makes it amply clear from the outset that [Corman] is cheerfully and wholeheartedly sending himself up, but manages to do it wittily." Its main criticism was a "long central section" of the film that drags until things pick up again for the final duel.[13] Peter John Dyer of Sight & Sound wrote, "Richard Matheson's script, a good deal more tenuous than its predecessors in the Corman-Poe canon, at least treats its actors generously to props, incantations and quotable lines ... A pity the equation doesn't always add up; there's too much slack, due perhaps to an imbalance between the comedy, which runs riot, and the horror, which trails behind in the wake of previous Corman films."[14] ...

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 88% based on reviews from 17 critics, with an average rating of 6.8 out of 10.

Perturbed by the apparent mistake, the user tried to speak to employees and managers at the Hertz counter, but none were able to help, and all "pointed fingers at the 'AI scanner.'" They were told to contact customer support — but even that proved futile after representatives claimed they "can’t do anything."

"Did the AI scanner [misinterpret] water reflections or dirt on the black car as damage?" they pondered. "There’s no way to even present that possibility, no path to defend yourself. It’s an unchallengeable, automated accusation."

Bonus comic:

MaryDeath is a comic about life, death, and everything in between. The story follows a young girl named Mary who happens to have befriended Death. Why Death has chosen to take interest in Mary remains a mystery, but despite his ever dark presence Mary finds comfort in his companionship.

https://www.marydeathcomics.com/archives/comic/

MaryDeath Comics was created in the 2010s by Gwen Tarpley. The artist transitioned recently, but it seems they don’t mind their deadname being on their older comics (i.e. some of the recent posts still use it on their Cats Cafe comic, which is their main effort now.)

Reminder that on !vampires@lemmy.zip Count @Zagorath@aussie.zone is posting a timed readthrough of the novel Dracula by Bram Stoker. bc it's an epistolary novel told in letters and diary entries and stuff, so you can read it over the course of a couple months by reading the entry that happened on that day, see?

If you click on this link I think you'll see all the posts so far in mostly the right order.

Anyway, I made this meme template to tell a mundane story on !dullsters@dullsters.net and I wanted to use it in another context, and this is the best I could come up with. The images are from the 1992 movie Dracula. Here's the template if ya wanna do better:

I have a bit of a headache so I grabbed a couple acetaminophens in "easy to swallow caplet" form. then I grabbed my water bottle, but it was empty. fml. grabbed the empty bottle and prepared to head downstairs to fill it up. Bumped that fingernail that I keep meaning to cut. ow. ok, I'll cut it now while I remember. but I got these pills in my hand.

no problem, I'll hold the pills with my lips while I trim the fingernail, then head downstairs for the water. OK, find clipper, trim. pills still in lips. OK, downstairs, OK, fill waterbottle. pills still in lips. Prepare to swallow pills.

wtf the pills are stuck to my lip somehow. Kinda like how your tongue gets stuck to a lamp-post, I guess? but it's not even cold. probably just a little sticky or something. just force the pills off my lips, no problem. hurts a bit more than expected.

Look in the mirror: my lip is freakin' bleeding from where the pills were stuck on them! each pill took a small strip of skin with it! there are two little cuts, one each from each pill. wtf!? how is this even possible...

there was only one way to express my state of mind....

I told my cousin and showed them this meme and I was like: this is my life now. this is how I spend my saturday nights. and cuz was like: taking pills and making memes! living the life!

That's right, day 14 of the 15-day tourney just wrapped up a couple hours ago in Japan! Here's how you can follow/watch:

Video Clips:

  • youtuber DonDon posts the "best 10" matches listed in English with replays including on-screen English analysis; those are listed here: https://www.youtube.com/@dondonsumo2/videos These are usually posted within a couple hours. Eventually the video is removed from the listing but it will probably still be up (if you bookmarked it for example.)

  • NHK immediately posts clips with Japanese commentary listed in Japanese - look here: https://www.nhk.jp/p/ts/Z8WRRJ9K96/blog/bl/p781bLebx4/list/ Automated translations work well enough here to find the right day, otherwise look for something like: 7月14日 which in this case refers to the 7th month and the 14th day (July 14th). If there are no videos there, it might be bc the bout hasn't happened yet and it's just a preview. Automated translation doesn't work that well on sumotori names, but this is a great opportunity to learn them by sight!

  • JSA immediately posts the highest-ranked 10+ matches listed in Japanese with no commentary, here: https://www.youtube.com/@sumo-video/videos

  • NHK streams a replay of the top-tier bouts (with English commentary) on their web site several times during the following day. You can see their schedule here: https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/tv/ look for "Grand Sumo highlights." After a day of scheduled replays, those streams are put up for "on demand" access here: https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/tv/sumo/ and here: https://www.youtube.com/@NHKWORLDJAPAN/videos

Live / replay:

  • try searching on twitch, this tourney there are at least 3 different streamers providing video feeds with commentary, and it's fun to have a community to chat with in real time. The top matches start around 3am US Eastern Time though. At least 1 of the streamers does replays all day.
