Haha ooi :/ You can't escape seeing them. Walking around a city you'll members of their cult doing their exercises, and every business has a poster for their "China before communism" performance. You'll see billboards for it too. Vile stuff.

I did see one anti Fulan Gong stand set up in NYC though, it warmed my heart.

Where I'm at that's, sadly, the dominant view. I moved back down South (US) and had a small bit of culture shock. There are billboards along the road with the "spare the rod, spoil the child" plastered on them. Sick shit that's way too normalized.

I've had to Uber lately to get to work and the conversations with people tend to turn toward an unpleasant side. One told me how we have to spank (best) our kids "just a little bit"

Off topic, but related to Uber drivers. One talked about how he wants to go to school to study Ukraine (he apparently has 'charities' for Ukraine) and told me how you "can't learn anything" in school nowadays because of "these protestors"

Another talked about all the antisemitism he has been experiencing since the Genocide started

And another guy was an Indian Christian who praised Modi

Every trip is like a ride from hell, and they've been a bit too on the nose lately with their hellishness

Apologies for the late response. I read the posted article and was happy to see that the John Bellamy Foster article I mentioned was also cited. And I found the connection between Heidegger's (and other's) though and imperialism to be so enlightening when I first read it. It really helped purge my remaining fondness for Heidegger, Schopenhauer, (and Zizek too) that I gained from my existentialism days. I liked the critiques toward the end of the Foster article of Zizek's irrationalism w.r.t. the environmental crisis and NATO expansionism. Wish I had more of substance to say, but thanks for sharing this article with us!

I'm real sorry you're going through this. I wish I had something definitive to give you to help, but I've been through this with the tech sector (I don't know the specifics of your background) and was unemployed for 9 months. Ran out of unemployment, but still had health insurance from the state. It had a real strain on my relationship and most aspects of life (made it near impossible to enjoy or utilize the extra free time). I eventually found a job, but it required a pay cut, a downgrade in position, and a move halfway across the country. Capital is disciplining :(

Apply for jobs like it's your job. Practice interview questions. Reach out to your network, even if it's just friends, or "colleagues" you haven't spoken to in a while. My wife helped a lot with job applications and interview practice.

I'm likely preaching to the choir and I'm sorry I'm coming across this way. I just feel your pain :(

It does get better, I didn't feel like it ever would, bur eventually something can work out. We have a mutual aid channel (I believe - others may need to give details) in case you ever need help.

Bookstores make me cry.

One of the (many) things that gives me a disconnect from someone is when I have to explain to them why they shouldn't kill a random bug that comes across our path. It's like, I don't know how to explain that maybe it's not cool to just kill any living thing you see because it's "gross" or you just don't like it.

I've got my own learning to do too, though, with many things. But it is disheartening.

Are there two books? I found one that has a subtitle which says it covers 1930 to 1935, and another with a subtitle which covers 1922 to 1945. Both have the same name and same author. Wanted to look into this book, thanks!

I think I'll give this a read. Thanks for sharing! Not a philosophy student but have had my phases of deep interest before realizing I'm getting in over my head. Years ago I went through the (stereotypical) existentialism phase and Heidegger and Nietzche get brought up as core figures.

I think I may revisit them through a Marxist lens. Especially since my reactionary father in-law is going through a Nietzche phase of his own. I've recently given the following criticism of Heidegger and Nietzche from MR a read: https://monthlyreview.org/2023/02/01/the-new-irrationalism/
