I suspect this is the actual goal.

By Grabthar’s tiny ball peen hammer!
If the Discordians are finally rising, count me in.
Now, the Gods they threw a party in one thousand-odd B.C. They invited every goddess 'cept Discordia, all but She So She rolled a golden apple, thereby starting a melee
Her apple corps is strong!
Grand and gory, hail Discordia! Grand and gory, hail Discordia! Grand and gory, hail Discordia! Her apple corps is strong!
Though the Romans dubbed her Eris and the Brits called her Strife She is still the same Discordia Chaos' spawn, and Murphy's wife And the mortal who ignores Her courts the peril of his life
Her apple corps is strong!
Grand and gory, hail Discordia! Grand and gory, hail Discordia! Grand and gory, hail Discordia! Her apple corps is strong!
She's the Goddess of Uncertanity the Mother of all Doubt But Her influence is one thing physics cannot do without In the halls of academia, the quantum theorists shout Her apple corps is strong!
Grand and gory, hail Discordia! Grand and gory, hail Discordia! Grand and gory, hail Discordia! Her apple corps is strong!
She's the strangest of attractors and a fractious, fractal minx There is madness to Her method and a twist to how She thinks Lorenz, Mandelbrot, and Julia could not divine Her kinks Her apple corps is strong!
Grand and gory, hail Discordia! Grand and gory, hail Discordia! Grand and gory, hail Discordia! Her apple corps is strong!
I have seen the works of Eris in our citadels and camps For the world, now more than ever, seems to bear Her special stamp Which is why I think Discordians will soon emerge the champs Our apple corps is strong!
Grand and gory, hail Discordia! Grand and gory, hail Discordia! Grand and gory, hail Discordia! Our apple corps is strong!
It’s an interesting argument. Does Israel not get to claim moral outrage if Palestinians bomb school buses because that’s just what happens in war? If there is no morality in war, Hamas did nothing wrong, correct? Rapes happen in war. Deaths of children happen in war. Could Iran use nerve gas against Tel Aviv and have it simply written off as “that’s what happens?”
Asking as someone who has fired and been fired upon at the request of my government.
First, fantastic job tracking down the actually relevant stats rather than the person above you who was trying to debunk.
Second - and this would only make your argument stronger and I’m not saying you needed to go this far - we would need to see if there has been an overall drop in crime rates. The tough on crime types love to tout numbers that reflect general trends as if they’re a justification or proof of the effectiveness of their policies. You need to demonstrate using proper statistical analysis to show that the falloff can accurately be attributed to a given policy.
The kerning is chaotic evil, though.
I don’t see the problem. It’s still 80% functional. Get back to work.
Honestly, I don’t know on this one. It’s tough to guess on internet companies, especially social media.
I think they’re facing pretty strong headwinds that have nothing to do with how we may personally feel about the company. Going off of memory, their valuation was slashed between their first talking about an IPO in 2022 and April-ish of 2023, which is when they started with the push towards monetization and which eventually led to shutting down the API to third party apps. I’m not sure where the $18B falls on that spectrum. I’m also not sure about the underlying metrics, like revenue per user, costs of acquiring new users, and so on. I don’t know if their growth has slowed or accelerated since the API change, but I also don’t think there’s a real competitor at this point (lemmy hasn’t reached critical mass and community fragmentation will probably mean it never will).
On the other hand, I’ve felt since last April or so that the stakeholders are looking to exit. It really feels like spez mismanages the company and is just looking to cash out, take the billion or two and move on to his next thing, after which it will be run by a b-school type who will run it into the ground.
All of which is to say I wouldn’t buy it for my retirement portfolio, but I also wouldn’t short it on opening day. I do suspect they’re underinvested in trust and safety and will run afoul of regulatory bodies, and Reddit is not the household name that Twitter is, so they’ll be easier to ban from markets.
Leaving aside a copy of BASIC on an Atari 2600, the TI99 was also my first, followed my the C64.
My parents didn’t want to buy me any software though because they thought that was just being lazy and I should just write it.
Turkey has a complicated political history but to color with a very broad brush, they were transformed from an Islamic state and former empire to a secular western aligned democracy by Kemal Ataturk. The Turkish army was politically aligned with Ataturk and would intervene to prevent Turkey from backsliding into an Islamic state. The current government executed a slow-rolling coup replacing military commanders and instituted a largely Islamic autocracy which for historical reasons remains a member of NATO but which would probably not join the alliance if the decision were to be made again today. They’re not a powerful nation militarily or economically by European standards, but seek to play both sides of international conflicts to magnify their influence. They cannot walk away from NATO without risking an existential threat from the military and economic fallout, but will get away with what they can.
Elon declared “cis” as in cis-gendered to be a hate term on Twitter.
That happened.
While it’s a depressing movie (and book, of course - and I agree the book is if anything even better), the characters have every single possible reason to be depressed. Without getting into any spoilers you couldn’t get by reading the back cover, the main character is mourning the loss of his wife, the end of civilization, and knowing his child will only inherit a bleak world of ashes.
