Start by checking whether he is talking about actual grapes or the modern internet code-usage of grapes. Once he figures out what you are suggesting he could have been confessing to he will probably never want to speak to you again, and you can avoid getting into trouble by pretending to be traumatised by what you thought he was saying. #unethicallifeprotips

I'd like a stack of potato cakes, topped with a fried mix of onion, bacon and mushroom, sprinkled with cheese and with a dollop of sour cream please.

[–] RustyRaven@aussie.zone 4 points 3 weeks ago

If you get the right shaped potato cake so it can catch the air like a frizbee maybe it will work better?

I was very disappointed when I tried red fleshed dragon fruit and found it had even less flavour. Looked good, though!

Now I'm hungry.

Is that fried dragonfruit? I did not know cooking it was a thing.

The taco plan didn't work out as I couldn't find my rolling pin for the tortillas. I made a pulled pork roll instead. It was still very yummy and I have four serves of pork in the freezer for future tacos.

I managed enough sorting in the garage that I can get my van out, and put together a couple more sets of shelves inside so I can get a bit more stuff put away inside.

It's not a rolly one and no hair was harmed during assembly. It's an Aerobin, insulated and with an air tube down the middle that is supposed to mean you don't need to turn it.

I have pork on the stove slow cooking to make pulled pork tacos for dinner.

Afternoon activities will be putting together my new compost bin, then a bit more sorting. I need to at least sort out some of the stuff in the garage so I can get my car out to go to work tomorrow morning. At the moment it has a bunch of cardboard boxes stored on top of it as well as boxes pushed right up against it to give me space to put shelves together.

The "feels like" temp has hit 3.3^o^ so I'm heading out for a walk to enjoy the warmth 🤣

You need to come to Ballarat. There is a hot chocolate showdown with lots of venues competing to be voted the best.

Today's bad news: It started to rain as soon as I hung out my washing

Today's good news: I got my toaster working again. Lots of crumb removal and playing around with the lever and it started staying down again. Google tells me it is probably a magnet problem, and it could have been interfered with by a build up of crumbs or it could be nearing the end of its life. We will just have to wait and see.

I've found the quality is generally pretty good. The biggest issue I've had is with the cheaper ones (Dinnerly & EveryPlate) expecting you to have more ingredients to add in yourself, like mayonnaise or bbq sauce. You also need to make sure you do the recipes with more perishable ingredients first, especially if you are spreading it out over time. The last box I got had salad with everything, and by the time I got to the last recipe it was starting to get a bit wilted.

If you haven't tried them before you can get free boxes (you still have to pay around $12 postage). They give out the codes to people who buy boxes to give to their friends etc, and there is a regular post in the aussie frugal reddit for people to post codes, which is what I've been doing. I got a box from each of the companies before I moved, and now that I'm at a different address I'm doing it again.

I was happy to see they are planning to use AI to assist call centre staff rather than replace them. It sound like they are planning to use AI in a helpful way, hopefully it works out that way.

The worry with AI is always when it is used to replace people with no oversight - like robodebt, or chatbots that block the ability of customers to get through to talk to a person.

This post is the place to put general site feedback and suggestions for changes/additions to FAQs etc. The post will be ongoing and linked from the sidebar to make it easy to find.

I am still in the process of putting together some general information and resources, so if you have something like a list of local resources on a particular area that might be useful to the community put it here and I can add it in.

Currently thinking about: how to make better use of the main page & other threads. Now that the bot is working ok I think putting some links in the daily post to other posts like the pet post and any ongoing topics would be good. I'm also contemplating something like a weekly what's on post, for people wanting to chat about what their plans are or get suggestions.

A nice little spot I visited early in the morning when the light was perfect for photos. There are a few pieces of old machinery dotted around too.

These are photos I took a few years ago from the flying fox viewing platform at Bellbird Park in Kew. I really love the personality these little guys have.

It's good to see projects like this being implimented. There is a lot of work still to be done in moving to cleaner fuels and every step like this gets us a bit closer.

I would like to see more investment in putting in place recycling/end of life processes for things like batteries, we don't have a great record in that area when we can't just send everything overseas. Hopefully that will come too, but I suspect we will end up playing catch-up with stockpiled batteries etc. at some point.

A few other articles for anyone interested: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-06-14/first-big-battery-at-ex-coal-site-goes-live/102477230

Well, tied with a few other states for highest number. And we have 12, compared to the lowest states which have 11. But I'm taking it as a win!

There are so few at this time of year though, it's a long cold gap.

I knew about common heath, helmeted honeyeater and Leadbeater's possum as state emblems, but there are apparently lots more. I'm not sure why we need so many, but we also have a state fossil, a state mineral, a state marine animal and a state tartan!

If we are going for a "more is better" approach what other State Emblems should we add?

What is this community about?

This community is a place created for the people of Melbourne and Victoria. We are a positive, welcoming and inclusive community. We might not agree about everything, but we always strive to stay civil and respectful.
The focus of our discussions is based around things that affect Victoria, but we are also free to discuss our local perspective on wider issues. Or head to the regular Daily Random Discussion thread to talk about anything.

What are you allowed to do here?

The overarching rule for the Melbourne@Aussie.Zone community is “Be excellent to each other”. As part of the wider Aussie.Zone we also adhere to the wider rules of the instance:

  1. Golden rule - don’t be a dick. If you wouldn’t say it in front of your grandmother, don’t post it.
  2. No bigotry - including racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, or xenophobia.
  3. Be respectful. Everyone should feel welcome here.
  4. No porn.
  5. No Ads / Spamming.
  6. Nothing illegal in Australia.

What can you post about?

The focus of posts should be on things happening in and affecting Melbourne and Victoria. That can include wider issues, but you should include something about how it relates to people more locally. For example general discussion of World news is outside the scope of this community, but talking about the impact on people locally is relevant.
Contributing to ongoing discussion posts is recommended over making a new post. Before posting check to see if there is already something similar you can join in, or check the list of ongoing discussion topics (to be linked to here once it is developed)

What can’t you post about?

Anything that is against the community or instance rules will be removed. This includes posts selling things and selling or rehousing pets.
Personal attacks, bigotry and harassment are not tolerated. Disagreements are allowed, but you should focus on maintaining a civil discourse and being open to listening to other points of view. If a disagreement becomes heated and you don’t think you can continue to do that you should leave the argument and agree to disagree.

Users are free to create their own identities, and it is at their discretion whether or not they share any details about who they are in “real life”. Posts sharing information about other people that they have not chosen to publicly share (doxxing) are not allowed. This includes people inside and outside the Melbourne community. Posts that inadvertently share personal details will be deleted. Users deliberately and maliciously posting these details will be removed from the community.

What should you think carefully about before posting?

It is very easy and quick to share things, but it is a good idea to think about whether what you are posting really adds value to the community. It is easy for a post to get overwhelmed with things like memes or an excessive amount of pictures. Before posting, ask yourself is it likely to spark some discussion or provide helpful information? Would it be better to post as part of an ongoing post on a similar theme instead of a new post?

Accessibility is something that can be improved for everyone with a little bit of thought. If you do post a picture, adding a written description can make your post more accessible for the blind and visually impaired. Moving pictures such as animated gifs can also cause migraines or seizures for some people and can be hard to tolerate for some neurodiverse people and those with sensory issues.

What happens when rules are broken?

If you see a post or comment that you believe is against the community guidelines and requires the attention of a moderator please use the report function. Posts and comments that are against the guidelines will be removed. If you post content that strongly violates the rules, or break the rules repeatedly, you may be removed from the community entirely.

Will things change in the future?

Any healthy community is a growing and evolving place and the community guidelines will also change to accommodate that. The moderators of this community will strive to maintain the community within the guidelines laid out, and to seek feedback from the community before making major changes to the guidelines. In any diverse group there will be a multitude of viewpoints and there will always need to be compromises made, but this community is built by and for the members and any future changes will be made with this in mind.
