Wind has gone past howling and is whistling and rattling alarmingly. The wind chill is bringing the actual temp of 5.5^o^ down to a feels like of minus 6.3^o^

It also varies depending on which company is doing the pickup, so something that is fine in one council area might not be in another. My old council had a fairly wide range of things that could go in the recycling, Ballarat you can't even recycle glass at the moment, and the range of plastics is much smaller.

I may need glasses to ensure I hug the right person though...

My close vision has deteriorated to the point I got reading glasses this year. It's a bit of a pain because I have to swap them constantly for my multi-focals every time I do something else, but it is definitely worth it to be able to read. The other main downside is that when I want to stop and think about what I read I am in the habit of staring off into the distance, and with the reading glasses on that means staring at unfocused blobs instead of trees and clouds.

I've always gone with furry side in, but I checked with both Mr Woof and Miss Meow and they are adamant that furry on the outside is always correct.

I am jealous, I definitely need glasses for driving. Or walking. Or sitting. Basically my vision sucks at all distances, so if I am doing anything that involves my eyes being open I need glasses.

I wish I had all the info to do mine. I have some ETFs (investment funds) and it takes them a few months to do all the end of year accounting so I have to wait. I'm expecting a decent refund so I'd really rather get it done and have the money back in my pocket sooner.

I have already done the walk and am doing the coffee now. The walk was definitely chilly, including some very crunchy grass.

I would like a short stack of zing with maple syrup please.

I had a brief patch of blue sky and managed to time a brief dog walk to take advantage of it. It didn't last long and it's back to raining again now.

I stayed in bed late, hiding from the raging winds and rain outside. Current feels like temp is -3.1^o^ (although the actual temp has made it all the way up to 8^o^). This is probably heading your way, so you might want to brace yourself.

A stack of pancakes with maple syrup and cream please.

FFS surely the Labor Party can find better candidates than this. It's often said that no one who wants to be a polititian is a good choice. Maybe we need to stop having willing candidates for parliament and have a compulsory system where we can nominate and vote for anyone, whether they actually want to be a polititian or not.

I had intented to go to Lightscape last night, but completely forgot about it! It finishes this Sunday, so anyone still wanting to go, this is your last chance.

What's everyone else planning to do for the week ahead?

I've collected a few links for pages that have things to do - let me know if there are any others you think should be added.

Opening up this area and integrating more seems like a great idea. I don't know the area well, but did have a walk through the university grounds a couple of weeks ago. I'm hoping this plan also makes it less of a maze, it was very hard to navigate - Google Maps just shrugged and said "dunno" when I asked how to get home.

Edit: I don't know how to find a non-paywalled link, I just open in an incognito tab

I walked along the north side of the Yarra from Richmond to just under the Bolte Bridge this morning. The weather was absolutely glorious - although a bit windy down near Docklands.

There are quite a few nice spots along there, but it is also quite empty. Some places felt like a ghost town, there was just no-one there, which for a sunny Sunday in the centre of the city seemed really bizarre. There is obviously something going seriously wrong with the planning of these areas. Where there were things like playgrounds and sports equipment people were out using it, but a lot of spots looked like they were designed for businesses, and the people (who you need to be there first so that there is someone to support those businesses) were an afterthought.

It's frusrating to hear that this is such a problem. I'm not sure how to solve it, as it seems to be that there are a lot of people that just don't care. It's easy to call for "more education" but that's not a solution when people refuse to engage.

I'm thinking about doing a regular weekly thread (if there is enough interest) to talk about our plans for the weekend and week ahead, as well as talking about what you have actually done. So if you have plans you want to share, are looking for ideas or venues, or want to review somewhere you have been, this is the place to do it.

I will be heading in to Open House Melbourne on Sunday. I managed to get a ticket to one booked event and will look at a couple of open places as well. I might try and get in to the Botanic Gardens for Lightscape as well before it closes.

I've pulled together a few links of things happening this week (I definitely won't have time to do this regularly!) for anyone looking for something to do - please link anything else interesting you know about.

Shot in the Heart of Australia photography exhibition, East Melbourne, 27 July - 7th August

Gertrude Street Projection festival runs from 27 July to 6 August

Open House Melbourne Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th July. Booked events are mostly booked out, but there are a number of open activities available.

Lightscape at the Melbourne Botanic Gardens is on until Sunday 6th August

Springvale Snow Fest, Sunday 30th July

Mt Martha Observatory - Public Stargazing nights held the first Friday of each month. Booked out for this month, but worth keeping in mind for the future.

I came across this site which has lot of interesting looking places for people looking for a short trip into nature. A lot of tiny houses, cabins in bushland etc. I haven't used the site so can't endorse it, but it looks like there are a bunch of interesting places there.

There are a lot of places which are quite close to Melbourne which would be great for just a night or two away. Some are on farms too, so if you want the opportunity to pat a donkey or see a cow close up this could be your chance!

It would be great to see more greenery in places like this. The laneway looks so much more inviting.
