I have a rental inspection this morning, which means I can't slob around in my pyjamas all day. I should probably find somewhere else for those random things I threw in the bath tub yesterday to give me more room to sort things. Mr Woof is going to be very upset, two visitors in the same week, that's like a full on invasion of our territory!

Sewing machine has been located. Exactly where I thought it should be, in a place I had looked multiple times. It was in a bag and I thought it was something else but didn't open to check.

I checked and it turns out I don't have any. Maybe I could make myself some, if I only I had a sewing machine...

Maybe making himself a guard uniform.

I have somehow managed to lose a sewing machine. I know it is here somewhere, but I'm a bit perplexed about where given I brought it up seperately and put it in the sewing room myself.

No, it's a built in and the framing for the doors reduces the size of the opening slightly. Plus they have gone for the cheapest possible wardrobe insert, which is a single shelf with hanging rail below it, and it has a divider panel in the middle to provide support to the shelf which also reduces the options for what you can put in there.

I've made some progress on sorting my sewing room. Unfortunately the shelves I was hoping to use inside the cupboard won't work - the shelves are the right size, but once assembled I won't have room to manoeuvre them in. I have a couple more shelves to assemble and can then start putting more things away.

I'm behind where I would like to be, but I think I can get all the boxes cleared from the lounge room and tidy up the worst of the empty box collection before the rental inspection tomorrow. It is nice having the lounge room more clear and open again, but I need to move all the furniture now that I'm not having to accomodate a wall of boxes.

The weather has cleared up and I have one load of washing on the line and some sheets finishing up to go out shortly. Fingers crossed the predicted clear patch between now and tomorrow afternoon eventuates and I am able to get everything dry. A few of the most critical items are undercover on the airer just in case.

The smoke detectors have just been tested and Mr Woof was not happy about the invasion. He was also confused about whether he should bark at the stranger or run and hide when the beeping started.

Miss Meow disappeared entirely and I expected to not see her for a while, but she rallied much quicker than expected and is now out of hiding and on my lap (it appears under the couch was the hiding spot of choice today).

The Marley Spoon box is here. Mr Woof tried to make a break for freedom while I was bringing it inside, but I grabbed him just in time. I am starting to acquire an excessive amount of garlic, every box comes with a full head but only uses a couple of cloves. This is a very good problem to have. The Dinnerly box next week will be the last of my free boxes and I will have to go back to normal meal planning and paying for my own food.

I mis-timed the dog walk badly and we both ended up quite soggy. Mr Woof got the wet dog zoomies, hurtling up and down the hallway using Miss Meow as a hurdle.

Edit: Actually, the timing could have been worse. It's absolutely bucketing down now.

How does your garden grow?

From Melbourne Zoo's Facebook page:

Melbourne Zoo is closing today due to high winds in the area.

Our priority is keeping our Zoo Members, visitors, staff and the animals in our care safe, so we will be closing for the remainder of today. If you have purchased a ticket online and had not entered the zoo before midday, you will be automatically refunded and you do not need to call us.

Werribee Open Range Zoo, Healesville Sanctuary and Kyabram Fauna Park all remain open today. Melbourne Zoo will reopen tomorrow morning at 9am. We look forward to seeing you then.

University of Tasmania currently have a Certificate in Climate Change Action and Awareness, and a Certificate and Diploma in Sustainable Living available with a HECS waiver - meaning that if you are eligible for a Commonwealth Supported Place you can enroll and they will waive the student contribution. The courses are fully online with no fixed times you need to be available, so are quite flexible to fit around other commitments.

I am halfway through the Diploma of Sustainable Living, and have also enrolled in the Certificate of Climate Change Action and Awareness for next year - there is an overlap of subjects, and the main climate change subjects are available in both. Many of the sustainable living subjects are practical and the assignements relate you your own situation and local area.

One of the subjects available in both courses is "Living with Fire" which I would highly recommend for anyone who could be effected by bushfires - as well as learning more about bushfires in general the final assignment is the creation of a personal fire plan.

I am just finishing the Science of Gardening subjects, which has deepened my understanding of how plants grow and the interactions between different organisms in the garden. The assignments have included things like assessing the soil in my garden, and the final assignment is pulling together everything to create a comprehensive design plan for my own garden.

There are also subjects on sustainable housing and biodiversity, if you are interested in doing some study I highly recommend looking into this.

My zucchini produced a beautifully matched set of flowers yesterday morning.

The one on the left is female, the one on the right is male - you can tell the difference as the male has only a single stamen in the centre. You can also tell the difference if you look behind the flowers, the female has a tiny zucchini attaching it to the plant, the male has a normal stem.

If your baby zucchini are withering on the vine rather than growing you need to hand pollinate them. You can either pull off the male flower, remove the stamen and brush it onto the centre of the female flower or use a brush to transfer the pollen (the flowers wither soon anyway, so I just remove the flower).

I've certainly had plenty of these butterflies around my place. I'm hoping that there are enough predatory insects built up from snacking on my aphids that will cross over to butterfly larvae.
