You cannot invest in peace without also investing in war. Like someone else said, a country with no military is a country with no negotiating power.

It could serve only vegan products

Say bye-bye to your market share.

Yeah let's subsidize food so that grocers can continue to increase prices and all those subsidies end up back in the pockets of the rich.

I just want to point out that most butchers don't work on the kill line. I can see PTSD being common there, but it is definitely not common for retail butchers. Most retail butchers don't even see a carcass anymore.

people don't want to witness what goes on in slaughterhouses

That's exactly why they're secretive. It's also true of many other industries and processes. There are a lot of things we benefit from that have unpleasant origins. When it comes to meat, you can make a relatively easy choice about it.

The ethics of animal slaughter and how it’s done are almost a separate conversation imo

It is a separate conversation, and I'm glad you pointed it out because it's an important distinction and one that is far too frequently overlooked.

Congratulations, you've discovered the struggles of learning an esoteric hobby. Often the learning curve is steep like that. And often you will encounter elitist twits trying to push you back down the curve. But they cannot keep you from knowledge. It sounds like you're already discovering some of the rewards.

We don't want a situation where workers have the full bargaining power of their labor?

If they're so important, maybe we should just give them what they ask for.

What's the lifecycle impact on the environment? You're saving a few hundred watts a day, but how many watts of dirty energy did it take to build the thing?

How much do you need to use it per day, for how many days, before it breaks even on the environment?

This is like the argument that football is exciting because it's a highly strategic sport: the most interesting and exciting things about it are happening on the sidelines in the coaches' heads while 40% of the time nothing is happening on the field.

So if the most exciting part of the race is the engineering that went into the car, then what's the point of watching the race? You'd be probably be more interested watching Bill Nye.
