No actual PCIe or M.2 connector on the board, the M.2 hat won't be available at launch, and it appears to block the required(?) coolers from being fitted.

They don't really look "hidden" tbqh, the lenses are quite obvious.

I'm wondering if these could be useful to me as a prosopagnostic.

I think M.2 would require controller of sorts and would consume considerably more power.

Pretty sure electrically it's just a Mini PCIe slot, which it already has a controller for.
