https://github.com/maltfield/awesome-lemmy-instances is still the better resource for choosing an instance, the most important part is the blocking and blocked by count, that lets you see how many instances are censored.

Defederation is IMO the biggest issue hampering lemmy adoption, if you could just tell people to join any instance and it won't matter it would make it a lot easier.

Don't remind them, they'll replace it with a new UI with ads and bing AI.

Sounds about right for American-christianity.

Not really surprising considering the IME[0] is usually considered to be a NSA backdoor.

[0] which has a privilege level of -3, compared to the kernel which is only privilege level 0.

There really isn't a replacement for local stuff.

Nextdoor exists but it's not really any better since it's still a proprietary walled garden.

I agree, we should raise the minimum wage to £48 an hour.

Which is to say that lemmy might have an opportunity there because the platform is less ad centric!

It works* for peertube, one of the largest (if not the largest) instance is bestgore.

*depending on your definition of "works"

Noticed this before, it's quite annoying.

Normally I'd agree, but it doesn't actually seem to be advertised as open source.

That said, it's still IMO a terrible licence for code, the "share alike" doesn't require sharing source code at all, because it's not designed for code.

I blame facebook mostly. Before them trying to force everyone, most people didn't use their real name online.

schedule an election at a highly abnormal time

There were October elections in 1924, 31, 51, 59, 64, 74. I'm sure the motives behind this aren't good, but before Thatcher it was a common time to hold elections.

One overlooked reason was highlighted by the Milgram experiments. Authority doesn't just command, it takes away the responsibility for needing to think about, and live with, the morality of ones actions. The authority can claim to be acting for a higher authority (god, the state, the corporation), and for it to absolve you of your crimes all you have to do is follow orders.

Even if that sin is murder, as long as you follow orders the authority promises to save you from damnation, or at least prison. Sometimes those orders are an old fashioned crusade, sometimes it's fitting substandard aircraft parts.
