Why wouldn't the All feed have as many communities on small instances? Does federation have to be 'consensual'?

Also, I noticed I can reply to comments on this thread but not the post itself. Does this have to do with federation or is it a limitation of Jerboa or smthn?

(Also - TIL feddit.it is located in Finland!? 😅)

Yeah, very true. It's quite the catch-22.

With decentralised systems and free software we can try to evade the control of these corporations (and the profit motive), but the irl parallels to this (e.g. self-sustability) are even more difficult to pull off.

How do you guarantee the money isn't being used for profit?

[–] Robaque@feddit.it 1 points 2 years ago

Also the prospect of profit would just pull in the wrong kinds of people.

Tbh moderation is one of those things AI might be able to do pretty well, at least sometime down the line.

Yeah the unfortunate reality is that irl the system we live in still stucks. But as you said that's precisely what makes the people willing to put all this together, in spite of the difficulties, so special. It's like an anti profit motive lol.

Lol so spez found a (short term) way to get mods to not just work for free, but to pay him for the privilege of becoming his slaves! Truly genius.

Is there any community suggestions instance? Wouldn't mind making a post with a backups functionality request if one hasn't been made yet 😅

[–] Robaque@feddit.it 2 points 2 years ago (2 children)

I'd like to know that too. The solution I've seen mentioned is to just create your own instance to host your own account which is... easier said than done, lol.

It would be cool if we could keep offline backups of our accounts and "sync" them to an instance of our choosing. Migrating would be as simple as syncing up the backup to another instance. And importantly, it would be way easier than setting up one's own linux server, most people wouldn't even know where to start.

And if we ever want to post videos, I imagine PeerTube links would be a good way to go?
